Don't go over board with the recommended dose OP cause this will cause some side effects for you. I was taking Magnesium malate and at some point went over the recommended dose and suffered some stomach issues.

If your anxiety is caused by a magnesium deficiency, taking the recommended dose is enough. Taking more than what you need isn't gonna do much for anxiety. I recommend you take 400mg a day for 2 weeks before increasing your dose.

Can anyone tell me why I keep seeing 1000mgs of magnesium being mentioned for a daily amount?

Sometimes even more is brought up.

I mean, I feel like it is working, I could be wrong, it could be placebo, but especially with muscle spasms and tension,

^OP I am not sure where you have been seeing that information, because what I have been seeing for the recommended Magnesium intake is between 270-400 mg for adults.

As I have also mentioned before, I was taking Magnesium Malate and it helped with anxiety and stress and also muscle tension but i did not consume more than 1000 mgs.

^^Supplement companies often recommend high doses just so they make more money... I never take what's recommended on the bottle, I'd rather stick to the RDI. I only take more than that if I feel it's necessary.

400mg of that stuff is enough to arrest MDMA side-effects so it's gotta be enough for just normal use

Yeap I agree with you on that one, and this is the reason why I do tons of research first before trying out a supplement or any product that I am going to put in or on my body.

my naturopathic doctor just recommended this to me about a month ago (for anxiety), and he said to take 400mg of magnesium (whatever the form) along with 800mg of calcium daily. I did it religiously for about a month, or as long as the bottle lasted. I didn't really notice any significant effect on my anxiety level, but it may have helped with muscle and joint tension a bit. I might buy another bottle and give it another go, because he also said that it can take a short while to get built up to a therapeutic level in the body.

I've read that if you take more magnesium than your body can process (approx 400mg/day) that it can cause diarrhea or bloating.

^I've read that calcium actually counteracts magnesium(have no idea if it's true). So you may wanna try magnesium by itself.
