Lump after shooting dilaudid...

A few days ago I shot 8mg of dilaudid. Right after injecting the D, a lump about the size of a nickel developed and was kind of sore. I have had this lump before but not as big and not as long. I am assuming I missed, it was red right after and the next day but today it wasn't red, and not sore anymore either. I did however feel a rush, just not quite as intense as it normally is. It also seems to have "risen up" a little. Will it go away, without me having to go to the ER?

Sounds like you missed PART of it then. It's easy to puncture/slip out if you don't have a well trained technique down...

Well sometimes I get in too much of a hurry. But this doesn't seem like an abcess does it? Would really be a major inconvenience to have this on my medical record if I need to go to ER. I do D's for chronic back pain, and not necessarily for the rush. While I like the rush, I still prefer snorting oxymorphone. I'm going to quit IV'ing, since withdrawing from opiates does not have much of an effect on me. Thanks for input..

It doesn't sound like an abscess. If you got a rush it sounds like either you missed part of it or maybe your vein rolled/broke. I've had that happen in the ER. They were giving me the same drug and I got a lump in my hand from where my vein ruptured. I ended up getting some of the med but they had to do a new IV and give me more since most of it ended up under my skin. It went away about 2-3 days later. Doctor said it wasn't anything to worry about.

Thanks for the input. I am going to quit IV'ing anyway, it does wonders for the pain, but if I want to get high, I prefer just swallowing OC's, or in the case of oxymorphone, I'll snort that. I've had the lump for 4 days I think now, and the injection sites have healed, but like I said I have no pain (lump) and no redness or swelling.

I agree, must have missed part of the shot. A warm compress for 10 or 15 mins will help this a lot. Or, because its a pain to keep reheating the wet towel every 30 seconds, just run your arm under warm tap water for few mins.

Even if all goes well, I always apply a warm compress for a few mins after every shot - it help get rid of the tiny bumps shooting sometimes can give you, and it seems to help the marks heal faster.
