this one goes out to all you old time trippers.
I’m a bit over the hill when it comes to drugs, by that I mean most people take drugs in their 20s and 30s, and pretty much most stop when the ‘settle down’
I went through that stage, and my first trip wasn’t until i was about 24 years old. it was a lovely experience - just 1/2 a tab at a beastie boys concert and i was flying (must have been good stuff in hindsight)
I haven’t tripped a lot since then, have had at least 10 years hiatus since. you get older, settle down, have kids, and friends also lose interest. we get old and responsible.
so, i’m now 38 and about a year ago heard about a vendor. this raised a bit of curiosity, and before you know it I had (quite easily) ordered some quality acid.
So, I have some acid, and I love Skrillex. he does an amazing visual set and was coming to my country for a set at a house festival. to me this was a perfect mix - Skrillex live and a head full of LSD.
Problem was none of my friends were interested. we’re all nearly 40, and married with children.
I really wanted to go lose my mind and have a good time, but didn’t have anyone to go with. could I possible go by myself?
Hell yeah!
when i’m on acid at festivals i normally wander off anyway and don’t really like worrying about my friends and their wants/needs.
I certainly didn’t want to convince any of my non LSD keen mates to come. no way would i want to be around a straight mate and feel like they were there just to chaperone me. that wouldn’t be a good trip
so, i decided to go by myself.
I dropped 1.5 tabs of 300ug acid on the train on the way there. . this was about 6.30pm and Skrillex’s set was 10.30pm
before that was Steve Aoki from 9pm, and What So Not before them. a nice lineup, but for me i was going for Skrillex.
I had probably the best LSD experience of my life. I was wonder whether to dose 2 or 3 tabs, but after a lot of reading about intensity of lights/sound and crowded spaces and the ‘dickhead factor’ of others you’re rubbing shoulders with, and the fact that I was alone (and supposedly a responsible family man!) I decided not to over do it.
1.5 ended up being a perfect dose for the entire night.
I can’t remember when, but sometime around 8.30 or 9pm the trip kicked in hard. in fact i was well tripping just an hour after dropping.
I was suddenly in a world i had control over. i didn’t care about the drunk and wired teenagers half my age that were on a totally different buzz. didn’t care that i was the old man with no mates. I just had a very intimate experience with my surroundings that is hard to explain.
I had what i actually thought and felt at the time was a chat with Skrillex. he said we were going to have a beautiful time together. he talked about using people like me to connect with the audience, he somehow used me or feel what it was like on the floor, and seemed to shine attention on me from the stage! it was weird but really felt real at the time. It’s almost unexplainable, but it was awesome, it was as good as having a real conversation with him.
the lights and video backdrop were amazing. perfect for Acid.
i was in a light tunnel and everyone around me was tripping (but they weren’t)
Skrill was saying things like “I’m so fucked up right now”, smiling, saying he never gets to see his show from down here, how lucky he was to be experiencing it with me like this, and that this was made for LSD, and he was clearly tripping with me.
it was surreal, but it was like really real at the time.
i’d never experienced this kind of trip. it was awesome.
so, if you ever:
feel too old
don’t have a drug dealer
don’t have mates to go with
see that an artist that you really love is coming to town
really want to go see them
JUST DO IT.
get some good acid and have a great time. I hope this post inspires some to do the same and have a really awesome night out. by themselves
there are many posts saying ‘don’t go to a crowded venue alone’ there is some bad trip worrying.
I am experienced, really wanted to do it, was in the right mind set, was in a perfect setting (amazingly visual, great music), although it was highly crowded with a few dickheads around.
if you can handle your shit (and i’m old enough to) then just do it.
