Candyflipping - first time - pilgrimage to the stones
Candyflipping at Glastonbury 2005
Intro:
Glastonbury seems to be a Mecca for people like me. The festival is laced with creativity ranging from artwork and music to the downright strange. This year at Glastonbury was like any other with mud making an appearance that wasn’t all too strenuous given the fact that it could have been a lot worse. This being my first Glastonbury filled me with wonder and excitement; I had some of the best days of my life.
The first two days passed by with vicious heat and myself spending my time up the stone circle playing poi, drinking whiskey and smoking bud. For those who have no idea of what Glastonbury is I will explain: Glastonbury is Britain’s biggest music festival with 125,000 tickets being sold in under four hours from their release. There is an extremely wide variety of music playing: Rock, Dub, Jazz, Reggae, Dance and Folk music is a mere selection of what was on offer not to mention the Circus field which was full of the bizarre happenings and holds the midnight carnival. The stone circle is the place to be for people like you and I: hippies sit round a fire drumming until the sun comes up while plenty of fire spinners do their business and what’s more people are hired to walk round the circle with speakers emitting the strangest of sounds. To put it simply Glastonbury is probably one of the most awesome places I have ever had the chance to step foot on.
Dose:
2.5 tabs of Tasmanian blotter
MDMA throughout the night in various bumps and bombs
Roughly 10 bulbs of Nitrous Oxide
Numerous inhalations of Cannabis
The Experience:
It was now Friday and the festival was in its primary function of playing music. I decided to trip on this particular day, as Shpongle were due to be playing in “The Glade” at 17:30. I dosed my Tabs at 16:30 and waited patiently for the acid to work its magic in my brain. The first hour went by without much interest and by that time I had made it to “The Glade”.
I had that strange electrical twinge that I get from acid and my legs felt shaky “boy am I in for a ride” I thought. I managed to get one of my friends to listen to Shpongle with me and since I was going to be a little out of my head I thought it would be best if my friend J looked after my camera and I am extremely thankful to her for doing so.
A pinnacle moment of my life occurred when I heard those familiar psychedelic tunes begin to pump out from the Glade area: Shpongle were playing! The moment of now has never been so immediate to me. I was fortunate enough to be near the front of the stage and Raja Ram the man himself was merely 5/6 meters away from me manipulating the electronic beats and ethno sounds that make Shpongle so fucking amazing.
I raved for my first time while on LSD. My body moved in what I thought the most fluid ways (most likely I was looking like an idiot but that’s all part of the fun). Looking around the area I noticed a girl behind me had a bulberator; I got a bulb and a balloon out of my pocket and asked her to load one up, she agreed on the basis that she got one of my balloons as they were yellow and had smiley faces printed all over them. I took the balloon and faced the dazzling lightshow and breathed in and out. As always words cannot do justice to that moment after the Nitrous; however, at that point I was in so much joy as here I was tooting Nos, coming up from LSD while watching Shpongle: SENSORY OVERLOAD! The man in front of me jokily threatened to ignite my nitrous balloon so I proclaimed, “that’s fucking evil!” We laughed and I offered the kind gentlemen a balloon but he declined, he later made me drink some water no doubt because of the expression on my face after the laughing gas and him knowing that drinking water wouldn’t be on the top of my “things to do list” in the next 12 hours.
I raved and raved while Shpongle played some awesome new tracks from their latest album “nothing lasts” and for those avid Shpongle listeners who haven’t heard the new stuff believe me its just as good as the rest.
Visuals weren’t too prominent for the first hour and a half. A keen older guy (he so obviously loved Shpongle, its kind of weird because you don’t expect to see a 50-60 year old man raving) passed me his joint I attempted to pass it back but he declined so I puffed away very happily; I later saw a women next to me smoking a spliff so I skinned up and smoked some bud, now I was tripping the weed bound with acid to give me some layers of visualization. The bright lights glared into my large pupils as I raved and Shpongle continued to break out those mind-bending tunes.
After Shpongle finished I was most definitely feeling the cid. As I was leaving a person asked me who was behind the music as he obviously saw my shpongle t-shirt so I stated Raja Ram and Simon Posford. J and I began to head back to the campsite after trying to make sense of a very fucked person who admired my orange combats. As the mud was thick we waded through it and I have never felt anything so weird in my life: as my feet submerged into the thick ooze: I stated, “I am experiencing the most extraordinary sensations right now!”
Back at camp which overlooked the pyramid stage; I sat and gasped at the immense greatness of it all and had a couple of dabs of some lovely pure crystal MDMA. The sound of the pyramid stage was echoing through the valley. I stared at the fields ahead, which subsequently began to revolve and rotate and turn an eerie shade of green. I watched clouds under the influence of psychedelics for the first time. The clouds vividly moved in the most fluid fashion, I love cloud watching while sober but this was incredible. I find that acid makes every thing look like an absolutely enormous jigsaw puzzle full of detail and pixilation its almost as if you take one pixel of your vision and you pull it to see what is around and beneath it while all the pixels of your vision are doing the same. As I stared at a tent pole lodged in the ground it moved closer towards me without moving my head and I seemed to be able to look at the pole from all angles at once.
My friends came and asked me what it was like and my simple reply to all of them was “fucking amazing!” I made my friend C roll me a spliff as I was too zoned to even contemplate getting a rizla out of my pocket. My cousin came and said that Roots Manuva was due to be on so after much thought and planning I got up off my arse with my spliff to go and watch some wicked dub. During the walk I felt an extra feeling to the trip and sensed that I may be candyflipping.
The crowds were fairly disconcerting for me as hoards of people walking in every direction around you gets bloody hectic even without the acid. We made it to the jazz world stage and waited for a friend to join us. We set off to listen to the immense dub and it started. We were standing quite near the bass speakers and as those earthly dub vibes came a coming I was rushing with the ecstasy and acid. The bass really made every bone in my body tingle with an earthly dub vibe. As I closed my eyes I was greeted with orange lattices and an extremely ecstatic state. A few points I recall an almost complete loss of orientation and control it was at these points where I was thinking that all the energy from people dancing in the bottom of a valley listening to some earthly dub may propel me to the next dimension “I wish” I said not that anyone could hear me. The bass reverberating through every muscle, bone and organ in my body gave the most awesome sensation.
After Roots Manuva had worked his magic I left to go back to the campsite. I departed with my cousin to head up the stone circle as I was now well and truly tripping and I thought the stone circle was about all I could manage at that moment in time. I proceeded through Glastonbury and came across the other stage with Fatboy Slim doing a set. I became set in the mood to rave so I cracked some glow sticks, as I looked up at the big screen and to my left I saw some ravers walking up with me cracking their knuckles ready to dance. I gave the raving some welly before the ankle deep mud really started to piss me off. After about 15minutes I headed for the stone circle.
The walk to the stone circle was by no means easy. I eventually got there and wondered around aimlessly until I remembered the bag of bulbs I had over my shoulder. Unfortunately I had lost a part to my dispenser so I was not able to have my own way of administering nitrous oxide. I heard the familiar rush of gas and followed the sound. It was very difficult to talk at this point; however, I managed to explain my predicament and the kind gentlemen offered to fill my balloons on the account that I gave him some balloons. First I only inhaled one bulb, MY GOD I cannot even attempt to describe in words what went through my head after that. Next I told him I wanted two in one so I began inhaling a double bulbed balloon; I soared onto a different plane of consciousness filled with luminescent green light and I began to have the strangest trip: I heard shouts ringing through the valley, these at the time seemed to me to be the shouts of all the people attaining the divine state I had reached so I shouted “eah!” to join with all the other shouts of my fellow psychonauts. I asked for another balloon and he agreed “we have an addict here” he stated, I was fairly sublime considering how persistent I can get when nitrous is going round. When I was under the Nitrous everyone seemed to be in the same state as all I could hear were people speaking in tongues. The group of people I was sitting with all left to go to their camp; however, I stayed by myself contemplating the deepest of thoughts.
All of a sudden a group of people appeared around me and were chatting, they were very friendly so I attempted to communicate. These people were on acid so I explained to them the pain in my legs and they were all experiencing the same. A guy came along gurned off his tits. We attempted to communicate but we couldn’t muster the thought processes to actually talk to each other so we murmured and made gestures in order to communicate, this was extremely weird as we were not making much sense at all yet we seemed to be able to communicate our thoughts quite well. It was amazing to look at someone you hardly know and the both of you are experiencing the same divine revelations; there is no need to communicate, as words are inadequate at that point. I skinned a spliff and past it round the group of people. A guy on ecstasy came along and gave my new acquainted friend and I a bomb of MDMA, the guy then left “what a cool place” I thought to myself. There were now four of us: two girls and the guy I was attempting to talk to. The girls were not that fucked as they could maintain conversation; however, I was completely gone and trying to communicate was very hard which I guess is why I could only talk to this guy who was extremely fucked as well. The girls wanted to head off and asked me if I wanted to go with them, the pain in my legs was very debilitating and the thought of walking through that thick mud didn’t do much for me. So the three of them left leaving me once again on my own, in retrospect I should have gone with them but at the time going with them was not an option. I exchanged hand shakes with my friend who I hope I will meet up the circle on another Glastonbury and they departed.
I sat there pondering, until I mustered the strength to go and check out the drums playing round the fire. As I walked I saw people playing poi and one guy using an astrojax, which looked awesome. The tracers off all these toys were immense; I sat watching the astrojax for about 5 minutes until I stood round the fire. Standing round the fire was so cool, hippies beating their drums while everyone looked so happy. This I felt was the heart of Glastonbury; where its true “soul” lies.
After watching the drumming circle for a while I proceeded to sit against one of the sacred stones. As I rest my back against it I felt energy flowing up my spine. The bomb of MDMA hit me and it was at this point I figured that a lot more acid would have been helpful; however, this was only my second experience with this substance so hitting it hardcore was not really an option especially in such a crowded environment. My thoughts worked through my situation, I was in heaven. I most likely looked very fucked at this stage and as a guy walked past he said, “smile!” so I did and he went “yay!” I continued to zone out and the spliffs I kept rolling helped me to lose reality time and time again. I can’t remember this part very well; however, I do recall having some very vivid visualization, which was cool; I find with acid the visuals aren’t nearly as easy to remember as mushrooms visuals as they seem to hide beneath different veils of perception.
It was now about 5 in the morning, I initially wanted to see the sun rise but as it was cloudy I couldn’t do this and the grey murky light descended upon the valley; time to go to bed I thought. I walked back to my tent and put my head down for a good 5 hours before I awoke once more.
Conclusion:
I didn’t like candyflipping as much as hippyflipping but then again I haven’t experimented with higher doses of acid as I have with mushrooms. I think a lot more acid would have made the trip a lot better as I felt the MDMA overpowered the LSD during the last few hours of the trip. Having said that it was fucking amazing; doing acid at Glastonbury I feel is definitely the way as it lasts so long you can ride the drugs for a long time. The rest of Glastonbury was sweet: I saw Ozric Tentacles and Hallucinogen in Dub on the Saturday and after that I think I had experienced so much my brain just couldn’t take much more.
Hope you enjoyed reading that and it is in my opinion that every living person on this planet should go to Glastonbury at least once in their lifetime.
