BERLIN—Patients suffering from the agony of cluster headaches will take anything to dull the pain, even LSD, it turns out. Results from a pilot study presented here on Saturday at the International Headache Congress reveal that six patients treated with 2-bromo-LSD, a nonhallucinogenic analog of LSD, showed a significant reduction in cluster headaches per day; some were free of the attacks for weeks or months.

"Some of these patients are still reporting significant relief more than a year after they were treated with the compound," says John Halpern, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School in Boston and one of the investigators involved in the study. "Nobody has ever reported these kinds of results."

"There seems to be a long-term prophylactic effect that we cannot explain," Halpern says. The team has since treated a seventh patient with similar results. "Compared to what these headache sufferers currently have available to them, this is quite remarkable. It could lead to a near-cure-like treatment", Halpern says. He and Passie have founded a company called Entheogen Corp. to fund further research and are hoping to start a phase II clinical trial with 50 patients later this year.

cluster headaches must be insane, i have been getting migraines for 20+ years and i couldnt imagine how bad a cluster of them would be, i could really see someone blowing their head off to make it stop. i know that serotonin has a big role in migraines and cluster headaches, and LSD has strong impact on 5-ht receptors. 5-ht1a is the one that drugs like zomig and imitrex target, so i can see how useful it could be in treating cluster headaches.

LSD probably does a hundred other valuable, scientifically verifiable things as well.

Too bad we are forbidden to thoroughly research it - thanks to a bunch of scared, lobbyist-controlled, money-mongering politicians who care more about their own careers than about doing what is right.

They alleviate the pain of shooting yourself in the head? I need some acid, now! And the fact that it's not a hallucinogen is cool with me, never got into those.

The difference is that this isn't LSD. It's 2-bromo-LSD which treats the condition without all that crazy tripping.

Well medically and scientifically thats quite clever =) some people might not want to trip
I think there is still a hell of a lot that we still dont understand about the effects of drugs on the human brain

There's controversy about weather 2-bromo-LSD is hallucinogenic or not, a letter from Cephalalgia 2011, 31(5), p.634:
Is BOL-148 hallucinogenic?
In a recent paper, Karst et al. describe promising results of the non-hallucinogen 2-bromo-lysergic acid diethylamide (BOL-148 ) in the prevention of cluster headache in an open study (1). They review the old literature on the lacking hallucinogenic effect of BOL-148 back to 1957 (1). One important reference (2) from 1958 is,however, missing. It is a case study describing how a 28-year-old worker in the laboratory of Harold G. Wolff took BOL-148 0.5 mg for a ‘‘pounding’’ vascular headache. This resulted in a LSD-like delirium for at least seven hours (2). It was published in Annals of Internal Medicine and the reference (2) to it is easily found on PubMed.
Wolff’s group concluded, ‘‘from these observations it is clear that BOL-148 in relatively small amount produced a delirious reaction similar in almost all respects to that of LSD’’ (2). This paper should be included in the overall judgement of BOL-148.

I'd guess the doses used are too low for the hallucinogenic effect to be apparent, and it's probably no better than sub-hallucinogenic doses of LSD. But as it's widely regarded to be non-hallucinogenic it probably pleases all the people who would freak out if they heard 'LSD.'

My friends now ex gf has these pretty bad. We gave her a vial of dmt for instant relief. Much better knowing you can stop one in its tracks instead of waiting. But LSD works for long term.

I saw some sort of documentary on this subject. This guy with horrible cluster headache's was saying he hoped for a non psychedelic analogue of LSD that would have the same cluster headache curing properties. He also stated he promised his daughters he wouldn't use any illegal drugs for some reason? Has anyone seen what I'm talking about? its possible its on youtube or something...

My ex boyfriend gets these. I was at his house when he got one and it was terrible. I've had some shitty migraines but they didn't seem to come close to what he was feeling. Hope this will take off on a larger scale.

study results:
Of the 53 participants:

* 22 (85% ) who had used psilocybin reported that it had reported attacks.
* 25 (52% ) of the psilocybin users and 7 (88% ) of 8 LSD users reported termination of at least one cluster period.
* 18 (95% ) of 19 psilocybin users and 4 (80% ) of 5 LSD users reported extension of their remission periods.
* 22 (42% ) psilocybin users and 2 (22% ) LSD users found therapeutic effects with sub-hallucinogenic doses.
* In secondary analysis, 76 (52% ) respondents reported that psilocybin terminated at least one cluster period.

Study conclusions:
"Our observations suggest that psilocybin and LSD may be effective in treating cluster attacks, possibly by a mechanism that is unrelated to their hallucinogenic properties. This report should not be misinterpreted as an endorsement of the use of illegal substances for self-treatment of cluster headaches."

It's common for medications originally developed for one condition to then coincidentally discovered to be helpful for others. For example, we have not a single medication for Migraine prevention that was originally developed for that purpose, yet there are over 100 medications in use for Migraine prevention today. A few are now approved by the FDA for Migraine prevention, but the vast majority are still prescribed off-label.

This study runs along those lines with one major exception -- both psilocybin and LSD are Schedule I drugs. It is illegal to manufacture, sell, or possess them. Dr. Sewell and Dr. Halpern did not provide the study participants with psilocybin or LSD. The participants were cluster headache sufferers who had not found relief in "standard" medications and had turned to "magic mushrooms" and LSD out of desperation. Although the results of this trial warrant further study, the politicization of the "war on drugs" makes it unlikely that it will occur any time soon. The pure spirit of the war on drugs is true and good, but the politicized spirit of it claims legitimate patients as victims. One can only hope that those who can change this will come to their senses.

Yea i saw this documentary. It wasnt just on cluster headaches though, i believe it was the psychedelic documentary on national geographic.

That dude was seriously in soooo much pain. He was rolling around on the ground and banging his head against the wall. Shit was crazy. He was pretty strict on keeping his promise. I wonder why his daughters wouldnt jsut give him consent to use lsd. Fucking bitches.

But yea cluster headaches look awfulll. I was in pain jsut watching the guy. Thank god they found a cure.

I wonder why his daughters wouldnt jsut give him consent to use lsd. Fucking bitches..

You have to understand that they believe - due to lots of propaganda, and brainwashing - that drugs are evil.
They are not bitches, but simply regular, unquestioning people who want to do good.
We all need to understand what we are up against in the drug war.
It is regular people, who are trying to be "good", based on what they know.
Our job, as I see it, is not to be angry or attack them, but to educate them.

^yea i was half joking ha im assuming they were really young or something.

I just think even if you thought lsd was "evil" but find that it can cure someone you love who you see writhing in pain and screaming you would make an exception. Like goddamn.

I agree though education is key.

LSD is the last thing I would think of taking for a cluster headache. i purposefully stay away from psychedelics because they have lately started causing the motherfuckers, and of course when you have a cluster headache and you're tripping it's not something you'll ever forget, like being tortured in a foreign country. I don't doubt they have effects on a person's natural ability over the long term to make their brains fight this shit, but man.

I also saw this documentary on the Discovery Channel.

I have posted this in similar threads previously, but my father used to suffer from cluster headaches for 7 years, and it was the most painful thing, just to even watch him. He was prescribed dozens of pills, used pure medical oxygen as well as homeopathic treatments like acupuncture and nothing cured them until he drank some mushroom tea I gave him in April of 2007. It has been over four years now and he is completely headache free.

Just recently, he told me that when we were on a family vacation in 2002, he was standing on our hotel room balcony, suffering from a cluster headache. He said the pain was so unbearable he honestly contemplated jumping off the edge and killing himself, simply so he wouldn't have to deal with the pain anymore.

Yeah, I saw this documentary too. I think it was focused on LSD and its capacity to cure the physical and especially the psychological pain in terminal cancer patients and cluster headeache patients. Fantastic documentary.

Very interesting, queenbee ;)
