Low levels of Serotonin causing mood swings

Hi there,
So I have been taking MDMA for some time now, since three years back, and I have noticed my comedowns are becoming worse and worse.
I used to actually enjoy my comedowns before, being a bit spacey and just putting some tunes on for the rest of the day till you fall back asleep and wake up again. But now.. they are so bad it's actually put me off MDMA completely. I am experiencing these mood swings I have never had before.
Like last night I all of the sudden, out of the blue, started feeling this pressure as if my brain was on fire and my thoughts were spinning like a hamster in a wheel. I did not know what to do with my self, all I really wanted to do was to scream at the top of my lungs to maybe let the explosion that was happening in my brain out. After about 30 minutes of that, I all of the sudden felt this huge load of sadness just pulsating within me, and all I wanted to do was cry uncontrollably. And then 30 minutes after that I felt just numb and depressed. These shifting emotions kept going on for 2-3 hours, and then all of the sudden it just felt like someone sucked all the bad energy out of me, to the point that I was not sure if this was another mood-swing because my brain all of the sudden felt empty and light. But I realised it was over.

So the last time I rolled was 3 days ago, and I've come to the conclusion that my serotonin is fucked at the moment, but I actually have quite a lot of shit load of Uni work to do, and I cannot concentrate if these mood-swings happen again. Was wondering if anyone experienced anything similar, and if anyone has any advice on what can help rebuild my serotonin fast.

PS. I will take a break from MDMA for a long long time from now.

i have been through the same. IMO a good diet and getting sleep is the best thing you can do. I know it can be hard but knowing that you dropped a few days ago and understanding that you are going to feel shitty for week helps too. Diet, sleep, and time are your best friends. Exercise helps too if you have the time. Other than that try your best to stay mentally tough. Mdma will cut your spirits into pieces if you do it too often. Its like a 1,000 piece puzzle and you have to put the pieces together again. I was gonna drop tonight but I too have a lot of school work and abused the mdma 4 months ago so i decided not too. Take a good 5+ months off. mdma can be special but it can also break you down in sneaky unforgiving ways. Stay strong!!! try to stay away from other substances, even cannabis and alcohol except for a few days after the roll, imo the weed saved me the next few days. Fruits and veggies!!!!!!!

DaLambsbread, how long did it take you to recover?

I am eating very healthy and I am starting to exercise as of next week.

JWills20, I do it on occasions but as of the last 4 months in general it's been twice a month, and approximately 500mg each time. And no, we do not test the stuff because we get it from the same dealer we had since 2 years back. Its brown crystal mdma, I do not think it's the purest but that's what we've been taking.

That sums up why you're experiencing the shitty side effects - especially the second line. Twice a month is on the border of overusage in my opinion but if this twice a month thing isn't your regular usage then it's not the end of the world. Basically what I mean is that sustaining twice a month for longer periods of time is risky but some people can get away with it short-term. I think your main problem is the dosage. 500mg a pop is extremely high dosing. I've been taking MDMA for over 3 years now and have never taken more than 250-300mg per session and tend to stick to around 200mg for the session. I'd also guess that you're redosing a lot over the course of the night hence why the dose reaches 500mg? MDMA tends to cause larger side-effects with both higher doses and especially re-dosing with each re-dose just causing more and more strain on your brain and body while often not even adding good effects to the experience. As a result, I'd say your problems are a result of the dosing and so you could probably completely side-track them by lowering dosage and limiting re-doses to 1 or, at the max, 2. If you need more than 200mg over an evening to get going then you've either overdone it causing high tolerance or your product is not MDMA or just very impure. Which leads onto the next problem.

You should always be testing anything you take not only to remain safe but to ensure you have a good night. At least once you've confirmed it's MDMA, you can dose accordingly and not end up having a shit night or a bad comedown because you took some other drug. There are also test kits now available that provide an indication toward the purity of your MDMA. I've never used them personally but if you don't think it's pure it might be worth buying some to find out. An indication of the purity could help with getting the dosing right too which is something I've considered doing myself but haven't got round to yet. Say your MDMA comes out at an approximate 80% purity you could ramp your doses up by 20% to try and hit the sweet spot.

For the future, and to avoid similar side-effects occurring again, stick to initial doses of MDMA ranging anywhere from 100-175mg depending on how intense you want it to be. If you need more than this in one dose you have either high tolerance or very impure product. Secondly, limit your redoses between 1/4 to 1/2 of the initial dose and only take a maximum of two of these throughout the evening. If you're still not where you want to be after the re-doses then tolerance or impure product is factoring in here. In my experiences using street MDMA from the UK (I assume that's where you're from since you're at uni), I find that an initial dose of 120-150mg followed by a 50-70mg redose a few hours later gives me everything I was looking for with a smooth afterglow and no comedown in the following days. Hence I stick to about 200mg throughout the evening. MDMA isn't like alcohol or other party drugs where taking more just adds to the fun and instead there's usually a 'sweet spot' where you have a great time and avoid a bad comedown. Finding that dose requires time and effort requiring that you buy a test kit and weigh all your doses. But is 100% worthwhile to stay safe, have an awesome time all the while reducing the chance of any shitty side-effects occurring.

I suppose I am just looking at a timeline here of what I should be expecting in terms of my mental health. Some people say one week, but considering JWillis20, you're saying I've overdone it, should I be expecting a lot more than that?

Nah a week will probably be fine. I was more referring to the long-term effects caused by regular usage at high doses. What you're experiencing sounds like a typical comedown which usually takes about a week to recover. At the very longest - two weeks. Just wait it out and you'll be fine mate.

Already started feeling much better. Been eating raw food diet, and it's helped immensely. Thanks for all the advice man.

it took me about a week maybe 10 ten days before I felt full strength. fortunately I had the next 4 days off after my banger and knew what I was getting myself into so I think that helped me out buuuuut I still have anxiety attacks that are pretty nasty here and there. glad to hear your feeling better. mdma abuse can hurt ya in crazy ways

Mdma abuse is pretty serious, in the long run is even more serious than coke abuse but still I prefer mdma and overall I would say mdma is safer when taken with the right precautions. With coke a quick solution to the comedown is simply to take more coke which is where the addictive part of coke is, unlike mdma where taking more isn't a solution to the comedown so there's no excuse really to be 'addicted' to mdma so people who go too far with mdma they can't really use an addiction as an excuse. All you can do now is eat well, just drink plenty of water and maybe get doing some exercises or even join the gym. I wouldn't bother with supplements as well tbh they're all just a marketing scheme. A good diet, exercise and time will get your serotonin levels a lot closer to where they should naturally be.
