Bupe Loss of smell and taste sense due to snorting Bupre and/or smoking?

Hello fellow Bluelighters,

I have an extremely reduced sense of smell and taste since last week and the doctor said he coudnt see anything in my nose and only gave me Cortisone-nasal Spray which does not work.
I snorted ~0,5-1mg Buprenorphine per day for about 1 1/2 years with some breaks and other opioids inbetween and I smoke, not a lot but a few cigarretes a day.

My one nosehole(?) feels swollen and raw but I can breathe pretty fine so it is not like from a cold.

Now I am very worried that this is permanent because it does limit my life quality a lot. Did anyone here experience similar symptoms from snorting Subutex/Bupre and/or smoking?

I have another appointment tomorrow but since it did not get better the last days when I took the spray I don't think it will help much.
Internet says: Allergies or Polyps. I don't have any allergies I am aware of.

Thanks for any input!

Your doctor will be the best one to determine actual cause but yes those are a couple possibilities. And if you want to take it further you may want to ask for a referral to an ENT. And you probably already know but the loss of taste is most likely because you cannot smell, as the brain uses the sense of smell to differentiate flavors.

Yes, thank you but what is an ENT? I guess Ear-Nose, Throat doctor. If so, I already was. The guy looked into my nose and said everything looks fine although I can feel the swollenness and rawness in one hole...it took him like one minute and the he just wrote me the script and sent me out, I was quite perplexed.

Whatever, I switched to an E-Cig and hope it gets better. Strange feeling...

Yeah it's an ear, nose, throat doctor. I've had specialists that were thorough and others that blew me off. Keep insisting on diagnostics if you still aren't able to smell at all. That symptom gets pretty rough in the long run.

Yeah it does. I can smell just a little bit. Like 10-20%. It really sucks and I am paranoid that I snorted my sense away...
The appointment tomorrow is at another doctor since the last one just sucked and didn't seem to care at all.

I totally get it and best of luck at your appointment. Keep us posted.

So I did a smell test and my left nosehole does not smell anything anymore. The right one does but it is still extremely limited.
Head MRT appointment is in one month.....and I got lots of Phytopharmaka, expensive and not effective.

I am pretty desperate right now and don't know what to do. If it does not get better I can't imagine living like this.

Hope this helps

Snorting irritant drugs can damage the mucosa in your nose and this could affect your sense of smell if it progressed to scarring/permanent tissue destruction even if your olfactory nerve endings were intact. If you feel like the lining of your nose is becoming inflammed (it is painful, dry, bleeding etc) then it would be sensible to take a break from insufflating and to take measures to prevent this in the future such as snorting water/saline in between lines, using a nasal spray/douche, taking breaks between snorting or using an alternative ROA.

Don't use a decongestant too much - this works by reducing the volume of your nasal tissues by constricting the blood vessels. If you have irritated the tissue then it needs a good blood supply to repair itself. This is why vasoconstrictive stimulants such as cocaine can cause such damage to the nose.

There isn't much research on most RCs (the name is a misnomer) so you don't know how damaging they are going to be or what a safe limit would be to prevent harm - best to be cautious and take measures to keep your nose healthy with any drug you snort. Fillers and binders in pills aren't great things to have inside your nose either - they can clog your sinuses and predispose you to infection, and can also fly into your lungs causing damage there.

Did this start suddenly? Around two weeks ago? Or come on gradually? And when did you being using an e-cig, before or after? Anything else that you have been doing differently recently? Are you still snorting the Subutex at this time? Did you tell the doctors everything?

Thank you both. I havent snorted anything since ~1 month after I quit the Bupe.

Yes, it started suddenly. I used the E-Cig after the symptoms. I don't snort anymore and did not tell the doctors that...I know this is contraproductive but since it has been over a month I thought it could not have been the primary cause.
I use "Avamys" (Fluticasonfuroat) at the moment as well as Soledum Capsules and sometimes it feels better over the day and then gets worse again in the evening and the morning.
I hate it.

Just as an update: My left nosehole started to recognize smells again today :)
It seems to have been a virus infection which takes about 2-3 weeks to cure.

Todays breakfast was unbelievable! I will continue to watch it and have another appointment tomorrow where I will give that bitch of ENT doc some feedback for her condescending attitude towards helpseeking patients...

Awesome! That's great news and I bet it's the best meal you've ever tasted haha! FYI be careful reusing your e-cig without cleaning it extra thorough so it doesn't return.

Well thanks a lot but it only lasted for about yesterday....today morning it was back to not smelling again. But the nose is very clogged now which it wasn't before and I can blow my nose and secrete comes out so I guess the plug came loose or so. Whatever, up to the doctor. I mean its a good sign nonetheless. Positive attitude and such :)

Sorry to hear that man. Yeah I've lost what I estimate as around 30-50% of my sense of smell through years of cocaine.

I'm sure all that HCL has my olfactory bulbs all burnt. I've heard ppl report subutex/Suboxone causing erosion of their tooth enamel near where they usually put their sublingual dose.

Not sure if subutex is buprenorphine HCL but I'd guess it's a salt of bupe nevertheless (easy lookup). If it's buprenorphine HCL, every time it undergoes diffusion through your semi-permeable membranes it leaves naked hydrochloric acid behind in trace amounts (if I'm not mistaken).

Subutex ingredients: buprenorphine hydrochloride, lactose, mannitol, cornstarch, povidone K30, citric acid, sodium citrate and magnesium stearate.

There you go. Hydrochloride disattaches and becomes pure hydrochloric acid. Small amount, but hydrochloric acid nevertheless.

Thank you guys. It has gotten better over the course of this week. And since I did not snort anything for over 6 weeks now I hope to be in the clear.
I will do an allergy test next week because my doc said it is very likely that some blooming stuff where I live causes it. I live in a pretty green area here in the city with lots of trees and different flowers and plants on the balconies of the houses right to my windows.

Also I didn't mention that this affects only the one hole in my nose through which I never snorted. I always used the right one and the left one did not smell :?

I will update this but at the moment I am able to smell nearly completely normal again. Only in the morning I am still semi-clogged.
