Looking for a good hypnotic

Oh so I guess zolpidem/stilnox/ambien doesn't qualify then either according to you? Cuz that sure seemed like a hypnotic to me! Not much of a sedative, but definitely a hypnotic.

I couldnt resist sorry.

grab your hydroxyzine if you dont want tolerance and dependence
And get ready for some wild dreams. My old doc (who failed to help me) prescribed me hydroxyzine for social anxiety (lmao I know, it was the only non-SSRI he'd give me). Didn't do shit but put me to sleep and have crazy semi-lucid dreams, either about sex or the end of the world. Sounds like it'd do the trick for you.

Notice how i said "the worlds best hypnotics"

zolpidem is certainly not among them.

Notice how the OP said "not a benzo" and "low abuse potential"?

Follow-up: I got Seroquel 200mg tablets prescribed and was told to take 200mg initially, then increase stepwise to 400mg over a few days. At this dose it is certainly strongly sedating and my sleep has improved. Side effects are few and manageable. According to some reports (Pubmed) it is the only antipsychotic with some abuse potential and supposedly is sold for 3$/100mg on the streets.

Roughly 40 minutes after taking mirtazapine, I become very hungry, and I will generally eat something along the lines of 3 peaches/plums and a protein shake. Afterwards, I fall asleep very quickly.

I am down to 15mg from 60mg, as I would like to stop taking it entirely. I have been taking remeron for a number of years now (perhaps five?), and even at 15mg it still puts me sleep....

Yep mirtazapine actually has causes a greater drowsiness at lower (15mg compared to say 30mg) doses. For me the drowsiness wore off in about a week. Sucks for me :p

At lower doses, mirtazapine is primarily antihistaminergic, causing sedation, which can be beneficial in depressed patients who have difficulty falling asleep. Higher doses are generally less sedating as its antihistaminergic properties are thought to be offset by increased noradrenaline release.

Brooks DVM, DipABVP, Wendy C. (2007-04-30). "Mirtazapine (Remeron)". The Pet Pharmacy. Retrieved on 2008-03-06.

Thanks wikipedia - said it better than I could :D

They're thought to be offset, or they are offset so it's less sedating?

Is there proof that it's less sedating? I mean, it sounds logical, but I know better than to apply logic to this sort of thing.

Anecdotally I can say ADs affecting noradrenaline can have an huge adverse impact on quality sleep. One of the reasons I moved to venlafaxine/mirtazapine was the sleep problems I was having on venlafaxine alone. You could assume then that higher doses of mirtazapine would be less sedating. This was pretty much the consensus I got raising the topic comparing the 15mg and 30mg doses on depression forums.

I can definitely relate to it making you hungry too! I think weight gain is the most common side effect (still some debate as to exact cause).

hydroxyzine
trazodone
gabapentin
doxylamine
melatonin
valerian (tincture works best)
well i think i nearly tried them all
except pentobarbital
secobarbital
methaqualone
methylmethaqualone

butabarbital
hexobarbital
amobarbital

"GHB is good and GBL feed my GABA's doesn't last long but is good for knock out
i haave used most benzos from the mental triazolam, to nitraz, loraz, delorazepam, temaz, medaz, diaz, clonaz, alpraz, etc. now one fluitnitrazepam rohynol every day.
I also take large amounts of Gabapentin wont help u sleep unless u take a few like 6-10 300mg caps maybe

Chloral Hydrate is still in MIMS i want its just chlorinated alcohol but its the original date rape knock out drug its a mickey.

alot on choosing ya drug will be can u stay asleep once asleep?
short acting benzos and drugs can be used if that the case.
I recommend you start by first trying 5-HTP and melatonin. works great.

hydroxyzine what the fucks that. is it in australia?

zolpidem/stilnox/ambien yuck fucking those shit sleeping tablets give u bad taste in mouth the whole next day zolpidem and crew.
stilnox well that enver made me sleep other than sleep walk not sedate into a daze of amnesia doubling ya vision every time u have more i got to 8 fold once drove a car at 230km/h fun if u wnat to looose time and wake up naked in the rain in middle of park not knowing what happened to last few hours.
stay away from these. i more old fashioned drug for sleeping

now that valarien has just got valproic acid in it. but it smells like smelly feet.
works on kids maybe.

doxylamine is quite sedating as well.
promethazine also works very good imho."
yep i think that good start but tolerance build up fast with doxylamine aka restavit and it has heavy effect on choline in ya brain. brain damage. use sleeping talbets in rotation and cycle them and handle with care know the drug and know when u got to be up.
there are now more shot acting anti-histamine sedatives can't recall name....

mirtazapine well another pine which are pretty well pretty full on but this one is less sedating but goood to add with other things like benzos. it also giv u the munchies.

Oh not to forget "Doxepin is a psychotropic agent with tricyclic antidepressant and anxiolytic properties" and endep they help aslo tricyclic anti depresssants.
there is also seroquel but thats a bit brain dumbing and used ainly for OCD, schizo and stuff. but knocks u out maybe you might ned 300mg at night that will = brain dumbed and fried next day thought.

You could try gabapentin or pregabalin, they will probably have the least-severe next-day hangover effects. Any antihistamine/anticholinergic like doxylamine or hydroxyzine will leave you in a nasty, quasi-sedated stupor the next morning. Quetiapine is an antipsychotic, having the typically broad antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic and antihistaminergic effects--it will knock you the fuck out during the night, but also probably cause severe cognitive sequelae the next day.

pregabalin think i might try and get some of this hmmm but how....
Hydroyzine wtf... never ehard of it

oh i found a few more going through my draw..: stemzine (prochlorperazine) Neulactil (pericyazine) and Zyprexa Olanzapine.

Any advice on the above i haven't used them much i know pericyazine is like thorazine it makes u vegetable.

The strongest hypnotic I have ever tried is levomepromazine, now I prefer quetiapine as it has fairly short half-life of 6 hours if I remember well. When I was taking 1000-1400mg of modafinil 200mg of quetiapine was sufficient. Olanzapine is also fairly strong but it has much longer half-life.

Just a sidenote: It's actually an aldehyde, which has water added to the carbonyl carbon atom, not an alcohol.

I don't really understand why so many people are against zolpidem. I have been taking that stuff for insomnia every night (with a few days off here and there to minimize tolerance) for months and it still works great. I don't get any weird side effects, although I can see its abuse potential (because it feels fucking great - is that really that bad?)

Well, that's a bit of a stretch. It's been abused by prisoners. No wonder why they'd want to become unconscious.

I've read the paper that talks about it being sold on the street- and apparently that information came from ex-prisoners.

yeah... id go with the hydroxyzine, the mildest of your choices imo.

seroquel is like using a hammer to get popcorn out of your teeth.

its ridiculous that they give it to so many kids these days...

I've found ambien to be pretty effective. No recreational potential but it does the job. I have seroquel, but really hate it. Its expensive, increases appetite, takes a long time for effect.
I have found most "safe" alternatives to benzos (I don't even consider barbs as I've never found a doc who'll prescribe them) are either ineffective, have side effects that are intolerable, or both/

Basically, all the sleeping meds suggested are:
Meds with horrible drowsiness the next morning:
-antipsychotics (Seroquel...)
-sedative antidepressants (Remeron...)
-sedative antihistamines (Hydroxyzine...)
OR
Hard to get Meds that would give more problems than benzos:
-Barbituates
-GHB
-Chloral Hydrate
OR
Stuff that don't work:
-Theanine
-Valerian

May I suggest (some of them have been suggested before):
-Alcohol (one of the best if you keep the dose low)
-Marijuana
-Zolpidem/Zopiclone/Zaleplon
-Melatonin (for some it works like magic, for others it does NOTHING)

If you have bad difficulties to fall asleep, you can take the 4 of them together, no bad bad interaction.

---long time no posts... I'll come back for long one day, maybe in a few months---

My current sleep regimen is 5mg melatonin with 50mg diphenhydramine.

Melatonin really works well, btw.
