10 mg zolpidem tartrate is, by far, my favorite Sedative / Hypnotic.
I have tried few others, including temazepam and Lunesta.
After I used zolpidem for over a month, however, I started building up a tolerance, and not going to sleep immediately -- I would do things such as make phone calls I didn't remember the next day, force myself on my girlfriend, and eat things and not remember I ate them. Amnesia is common among those taking zolpidem, as you don't remember much the next day if you stay up after you take it. But the sleep sure is amazing. Right now, I'm trying Rozerem.... which doesn't help me get to sleep at all, but once I get to sleep my sleep is extremely rejuvenating, and I have wildly vivd dreams. Ambien knocks me out and messes me up bad. I have a love for Ambien, but I try to avoid it as much as possible nowadays, as I know how easily I'll get hooked on it. It's really enjoyable. :D

I am curious about the thorazine related anti nausea/antipsychotic drugs. I am thinking it is only good if I shot it with some diph and bupe, but that doesn't even seem worth the trouble if one has any amount of decent opiates.
to stay on topic
Seroquel, trazadone, and mitrazipine will knock someone out, it seems the doc is playing it safe by not giving away benzos. Benzos are only good for short term sleep problems, soon you need them and can not sleep without them not to mention tolerance. 2mg alprazolam used to put me to sleep if taken at once, now i am rxed 4mg a day and can't get fucked up from it no matter how much I take. I disagre with the people saying phenobarbital, that stuff is shit but then again to each their own.

Doxylamine - found in OTC sleep aides. It's an antihistamine. It knocks me out but there is nothing euphoric or enjoyable to it at all so I don't think you would abuse it. The dose is one tab, taken as directed or one extra makes me tired. Almost too tired.

I've been liking zolpidem for a long time. 10mg. GHB is a heavy world of self-reliance and knocking out when you take too much. But the wakeup is so splendid. Highly addictive, yet highly effective at knocking you out for a few hours and then redosing when you wake up if you can not fall into its ego-enhancing splendor.
I had a long relationship with diphenhydramine and melatonin to kick it off.. the drowsies the next day just become tolerable. But it's hard to rely on.
Now I just trigger with about 6 - 9 mg of Melatonin. If alcohol is involved I lower that...
Sometimes alcohol is a good trigger but then watch out about digestive health. Don't want to over do it and wind up with beer/wine/whiskey shits for a week.
Routine living is a bitch but if you do something you enjoy, getting into that pattern is worth the effort of eating well, getting the exercise you need and sleeping to regenerate glucosamine storage and neurotransmitter metabolizing and body repair.
Also not sticking to one thing and being able to judge if you can sleep without taking pills or drinks a ritual is pretty helpful. Helps the body reset tolerance levels so you can take less of what you were doing before.
I just rotating round through a few things: from anti histamines, then i take a long break between those and never taking the same one 2 nights in a row. Then i also always take melatonin, 5-HTP, KAVA, somas and rotate a few benzo i take one for a few days then leaving enough time for the last benzo to leave my body and all its metabolites.
I wish i could use some GHB and had more soma's after using soma for a few days straigh at over 3000mg each day i think i might be mistaking extra benzo withdrawals for soma WD's. hmmmm
Phenibut (Phenyl-Gaba)
It seemd to have no effect the first times i took it. But after raising above 1-4gram it started to work, takes up to 2 hours to kick in, does not force me to sleep but makes me sleep good for up to 13 hours (dose dependent), also a very little opiat (or maybe GHB like but very weak and longlasting) like euphoria (not recordnized at first but after some testing i found that i am always satisfied and relaxed in a natural way). in high doses it gives a hangover the next day and sometimes something was wrong with my sense of balance.
Helps me also with GHB withdrawl and weak stimulant comedown.
Is thought to act mainly on Gaba-B receptor. Works up to 15 hours. Slow onset.
Can make dependent, but not as fast as other downers i used (Benzos, Barbiturates, Cloralhydrat, GHB, Z-drugs, Carisoprodol) have been addicted to most of them and withdrawn sucessfully. but after 200g i used without a brake (in 2 month) i stoped and had very high bloodpressure and didn´t sleep a vew days and was nervous. was not nice, but nothing compared with real downer withdrawl.
I hate to say this but an anti psychotic....and I say the best choice is Seraquel. Ambien isn't that strong and you build a very rapid tolerence with it, and the same with Imovane which not only you build a quicker tolernece to than benzos but also has the worst aftertaste in the world. Both of those give you fucked up hallucinations if you don't sleep and it may happen to find yourself without sleep in a semi-amnesia so to speack and doing stuff that you may not remeber the next day for the life of you.

I've been taking 40mg/day of diazepam for 7-8 years. I take all the benzos during the day. The dose of any benzo as a sleeping aid would be too high for daily use (according to my doctor) so i had to try something else instead.
I take 25-50mg Surmontil (trimipramine) / night to get a good night sleep. I'ts an old school tricyclic antidepressant that makes you tired in similar manner as mirtazapine does. Not everyone's cup of tee but works better than well for me.
Something I can get right now from the Doc.
Meanwhile I did some research and Quetiapine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seroquel) seems interesting. Any experiences with it anyone?
Horrifying.
It induces the most bizarre and uncomfortable feelings. It once caused me to have a nightmare so terrible that I was seriously considering suicide the next day because images from the dream kept flashing in my mind and I wasn't able to do anything to forestall them. At one point, I was so traumatized by my experiences with the stuff that I would have panic attacks during the day when I thought about the evening to come and how I had no choice but to imbibe that poison lest I suffer a sleepless and hellish night of auditory hallucinations caused by D2 receptor upregulation. (Fortunately the hallucinations only lasted a night or two when I finally did stop taking that shit. They weren't really true hallucinations, either, by the way; they only occurred when my air conditioner was on or when there was some other source of white noise in the room which provided my dopamined brain the chaotic, random data it needed to fuel its apophenic enterprising.)
There really are no words to describe how much agony that shit caused me. Thinking back on it all, I have half a mind to sue the manufacturer.
In summary, you probably shouldn't take it. I say probably in recognition of the fact that people can respond in a myriad of ways to a given medication. If you're anything like me, though, you would do well to run as fast and as far from that shit as you can.
