Long-Term Use of Clonazapam

I suffer severe social anxiety, I've tried SSRI's and numerous other anti-depresants and the negative side effects always seem to outweigh the positive effects. Valium, worked for a while but my tolerance built quickly and I was running through a months supply in weeks and eventually the doctor took me off it. The only benzo that seemed to help is Clonazapam. I've talked to physoclogists and GP's about it but they say it's not an option for me.

I excersize regularly and eat healthy food. I've seen physologists but it just seems to go nowhere.

I've read numerous reports of Clonazapam being the most commonly presrcibed Anxiety medication in the States as it is less harmful then Xanax. I don't understand why it isn't used here?

I can source Clonazapam for myself quite easily, I just worry about the long-term effects. Say if I was using 2mg maybe 3-4 times a weeks for a long-term.

I'm at the point where I can't keep a job, my famly contsantly worry about me and I make excuses for not going out to see my friends. It seems the only time I am happy, open up to people and to be able to live a full life is on Clonazapam. Is this wrong?

I'd recommend looking into psychedelics for sorting out your anxiety, LSD changed my life for the better in that respect that's for sure. That combined with cognitive behavioural therapy has completely eliminated my unneeded anxiety.

"eat healthy food" is very vague. If you're not taking dietary supplements you will be deficient in essential nutrtients, no question. You want to make sure you're getting enough omega-3 fatty acids, PLENTY of protein (whey protein or similar, not cooked protein - once it's cooked it's mostly biologically useless), plenty of B-vitamins throughout the day and of course all the other essential vitamins and minerals. I'd recommend a liquid multivitamin + flaxseed oil (GREAT source of omega-3) + whey protein at least 40g a day (when you're stressed or recovering you need more). Also probiotics and digestive enzymes are helpful too - you can ingest all the nutrients in the world but if you're digestive system isn't up to scratch you won't absorb much of them.

And of course all of the above is in conjunction with a healthy diet, which it sounds like you have now anyway.

Definitely best to first explore the options that don't involve you taking a highly addictive substance everyday. Trust me at one point my anxiety was so crippling I was desperate for a benzo script just to be able to function again, but there are other much more effective (in the long term) solutions.

I think that your suggestion that the only way you can live a full life is on clonazapam is wrong, yes.

I think benzos have their place in medicine but from your description, if you need it to work, talk to people or be happy, you'll need to (or at least, want to) use it pretty much all the time, and will be committing yourself to a benzo addiction. As many people on here could tell you, this has pronounced downsides.

For some people, the benefits of long term benzo use may outweigh the negatives, but you can only know that once you've tried other methods to deal with your anxiety. What else have you tried? You've said you've tried other medications, but what about other methods? Social anxiety is perhaps the most responsive condition to cbt therapy. Have you tried meditation?

I have social anxiety too, and anxiety in general, but it is 100 times better now than it used to be, and I fully attribute that to a year spent intensively working on cbt and mindfullness meditation. It's an awesome feeling knowing that anxiety has no hold or power over you anymore, and that is a point that anyone can get to.

Also I found insufflated picamilon (novel source of GABA, crosses BBB then hydrolyzes to GABA and niacin) to be an almost immediate relief to anxiety. Free of side effects, no addictive potential, no recreational potential, just makes you feel nice and relaxed and in control. Can be ordered easily from supplement suppliers. Also many have found the -racetam family of drugs to be effective in dealing with anxiety (never used them for anxiety myself).

Russians seem to come up with far superior pharmacological solutions to the highly addictive drugs western pharmaceutical corporations like to push. I wonder why?

^ Not everything Russia has come up with has been great, unless you think phenazepam is a good benzodiazepine. ;)

They have done some interesting things though, it would be interesting to read up about the history of their medical research in this field.

OP: As much as benzodiazepines seem like they are the answer, in the long term the side effects and WD are a lot worse then SSRIs. You don't expend much on the psychologists; did you have many sessions? Counseling takes effort on your part as well, but it can do wonders in the long term if you have a good therapist.

I would love to see a source for that

There are a few studies that have looked at the effect of adding whey protein in the diets of patients with severe stress disorders. Some linking supplementation of protein with increasing tryptophan levels and reducing cortisol consentrations or something. I guess it could help out on the side in the long run, and wouldn't hurt to use to adding some protein into your diet. As long as you drink plenty of water
