Opioids Long term effects of low dosages?

I have been taking 10mg of hydrocodone twice a week for about 1 year. Is there any negative long term effect from this amount? Assuming I never increase the dose or frequency (big assumption, I know, but assuming it is true), is there any reason to stop doing this? Is there any possibility that this would have an effect on one's mental faculties? In other words, I wouldn't want it to start making me stupid or forgetful or anything like that. I there anything else to worry about?

Many thanks.

I seriously doubt it would give you any problems. I've taken well over 1000 10/325s and it doesn't make me stupid or forgetful. I was on much heavier doses than you so it caused withdrawals when stopped. Since you don't take a lot I wouldn't even worry about it.

Doesn't cause long term side effects.

That is good to hear. I really don't want to stop - it's such a nice mellow relax and then a really good night's sleep, just a couple times a week, with *seemingly* no downside whatsoever. But I can't help but feel like there must be *some* down side. I ask myself "can I do this forever"? Acquisition is tough, but that's a different conversation.

Thanks for the reply.

If you can maintain that that dosage you wouldn't run into any problems. Trouble comes when people start upping doses and go onto stronger opiates because it doesn't cut it any more. So don't mess up

And I guess there's no meaningful difference between hydrocodone and tramadol or ultracet? In whatever is roughly the same dose? These seem easier to get.

The biggest dangers are overdose and addiction. Aside from that, opiates mainly cause constipation, erectile problems and other minor side effects. No chronic organ damage like alcohol or cocaine.

However, taking opiate pills with acetaminophen in them can be dangerous in high doses or when mixed with other potential liver toxins (alcohol, kava, more acetaminophen). Monitor your daily acetaminophen intake and all should be fine.

I'd be more worried about the apap that's most likely packaged in with it than the hydocodone itself. In general, opiates are pretty harmless to the brain and other organs unless you overdose and that can cause serious health issues, but with the dose you're talking about, that's just not going to happen.

That is quite amazing that after 1 year of use you are still only using 10mg to achieve a nice feeling, even if only twice a week.

^ ya, not even just that tho....he has some great self control, i only lasted a week or so after i first tried OC to be smoking dope everyday....

and lady codone covered this thread......this is what you need to know....

although, i might stop while your ahead.....opiate addiction can ruin so many aspects of your life.....even tho there may not be a problem now, doesn't mean there wont be one in the future......

I can't believe his tolerance is still that low. Lucky dog. Ever since I hurt my back my tolerance has been through the roof it seems. Tonight I made a solution and I thought it was 1mg oxy per 2units of solution. My plan was to do a little and a little more til I felt comfortable not in withdrawals. I got halfway and waited 15 minutes and still felt shitty. So I said fuck it and finished the whole thing. Turns out it was 1mg oxy per 1 unit of solution. So I did 100 units (100mg of oxy). Didn't even get a real nod or feel that great. Bummer. My back feels good so at least I'll be able to catch a couple hours of sleep. Doing dope really increased my tolerance too unfortunately.

edit...
Hope thats not considered dick sizing. I consider it complaining lol, but feel free to remove it.

Ultacet is a brand name for a medication that contains tramadol and acetaminophen. Tramadol is much different than hydrocodone. It definitely has some opioid effects, but the larger doses (300+mg) have been associated with seizures. I'd avoid tramadol entirely if its possible.

There has been some suggestion that long term use of hydro or oxycodone can lead to hearing loss:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17525781

CONCLUSIONS: The chronic use of hydrocodone can be associated with progressive sensorineural hearing loss. Successful auditory rehabilitation can be achieved with cochlear implantation. Genetic polymorphisms of drug metabolizing enzymes as well as associated comorbidities such as hepatitis C infection may be significant in the development of hydrocodone ototoxicity, though additional investigations are necessary.

If anyone knows more please reply.

you will probably feel some minor withdrawl effects if you decide to quit. Diarrhea, goose bumps, runny nose, sneezing, pupil dilation, etc. But most likely you won't get the extreme sickness such as tremors, profuse sweating, vomiting, etc. it would be a good idea not to increase your dosage, for considering you are a regular user, it would most likely result in physical dependence if you are not dependent already.

I took 2-3 hydorcodone a day for 1.5 years for back pain. My doctor cut me off without notice and I experienced no withdrawal whatsoever. I did not abuse the drug really though (maybe an extra dose here or there) and took what I was supposed to, that may have had a lot to do with it. But I do not think you will have any problems if you stay at your current usage level.

Honestly, the long-term effects of the Tylenol will be more of a risk than the hydrocodone.

When taken as directed, opioids are the least damaging to the body than any other class of drugs. There are some that are more damaging than others (such as methadone and fentanyl) but most of the pure opiate agonists (codeine, morphine) have little to no negative effect on organs when used as directed.

Really? Do you think I should worry about the apap that's in 20mg of hydro apap per week? Isn't that merely 325 x 4 mg/week? That's two regular strength tylenols, twice a week. Do I really need to worry about that? I do WAY more liver damage via my casual, regular drinking.

I have tried ultracet, 50mg. This has no apap so that's a good thing, right? I think 50mg is roughly as potent as 5 or 7.5 mg of hydro? My dose of ultracet is 1 and a half pills ... they're tiny little pills to break in half. The 75 mg is roughly equivalent to 10mg or less of hydrocodone. I felt about the same "buzz" as hydro and got about the same good night sleep. As you probably know, ultracet seems to be easier to acquire, hence my question about it. Given the aquisition issues, I think that this 75mg ultracet dose is going to replace my 10mg hydro dose. My goal is to still stick to just twice a week.
