Live PA vs. Djs

ya but if u dont kno how to betamatch u arnt mixing imo u just press butons in abledon and u arn't a real dj
and dj's aren't musicians because all they do is play other people's records... :)

also, the irony of you telling other people they are untalented and lazy when you can't string a simple sentence together is not lost on me.

have a nice day.

well thats just ur opinion and at least they kno how to beatme=atch on there own and they dont have 2 let ablsdon beatmach there trax 4 them lol

no, you're not a "real DJ". you are a "real" producer, composer and performer.

how can u say they r a real performer if they just stand their and push butons on abledon when abledon just mixes there trax 4 them when a dj has 2 beatmatch every record and mix them? u prolly dont even kno how to beatmatch lol 8o

Incase everyone hasn't realised by now, toa$t is taking the piss. I think this goes back to a recent thread about DJing, where someone else claimed that you're only a proper DJ if you can beatmatch, and toa$t went off on one about how beatmatching is actually pretty easy, and DJing is massively over-rated.

What would you rather see?

Personally I prefer to see Live PA, because it's original composition and the performer can interact with the crowd much more.

They can, but they don't. I can't count how many Live PAs I've seen where the person is just buried behind a rack of synths or their laptop. Having a Live PA is no guarantee towards interaction; Live performers in EDM are jkust as likely to be reserved performers as Djs are. In fact, I've had the pleasure of seeing soem very wonderfully interactive DJs . . . and some boring "live" PAs.

Hardfloor, for instance -- brilliant music. But they sat on chairs behind keyboards, pressed play, and tweaked a couple knobs.

Plus, you could have DJs playing original compositions on CDJs, too . . . or Serato.

i am reminded of this beautiful quote from the erstwhile roliepolie:
roliepolie said:
I didn't spend the last 6 years of my life learning how to mix records, so that some 15 year old kid can come and take over the world with his fucking laptop and a pirated copy of Ableton...
:)

if the music sounds great, who cares what buttons the guy on stage is pressing...

...or if he's bouncing around like a nitwit vs concentrating on putting out some kickass beats. interacting with the crowd. puh LEEZE.

to you crowd interacter fans: would you rather see a DJ play kickass music all night with his face buried in a laptop, or some moron prancing around while mixing the last 30 seconds with the first 30 seconds of the tracks on benny benassi's latest chart?

if you chose the former: try taking that to its logical extension.

If you chose the latter: u shud of prolly got a life cuz u dont even kno that a reel dj knows how to pick trax and rly work tha room and can read the crowd and alive PA is just some guy o his laptop who just pushes play an his hole set iz done 4 him

i.e. simian mobile disco vs steve aoki

i pick SMD :D

toa$t I think it might be time for you to re-post that picture of Justice playing a 'live set' :)

Another funny anecdote I have is about Peter Hook (yes that's Peter Hook from my alltime favourite band New Order). A couple of years ago, he embarked on a world tour as a 'DJ', and at first the audiences were loving his perfectly-mixed selection of classic Hacienda tracks................until it was found out that he actually wasn't DJing at all - he was just playing a pre-recorded tape whilst pretending to work the crossfader/EQs :)
