So for all you DJs out there I have a weird question:
Do you believe it is possible to become addicted to EDM? I have some evidence that may point towards at least an EDM obsession if not addiction.
My Example is my friend who will literally commit crimes to get into sold out shows. This all started last year after her first rave.
She had to borrow several hundred dollars for tickets to a festival for a week, she took off work even though she desperately needed money.
She basically demands her boyfriend to buy tickets for every EDM show she can find in a tri-state area. Even if it financially kills him.
She spent double cover price for tickets to a sold out show (about $500) in a scam, then immediately attempted to buy more tickets off of craiglist. This again destroyed her and her boyfriend financially. She fights with people about going to EDM shows like it's an actual physical need. She'll run herself out of money and time to get in, and if she can't she'll attempt to figure out a way to break into the venue. If all fails she'll have a mental breakdown over it or go into a rage. She has described the behavior as "moments of desperation" and "my escape from reality" etc.
It's causing a serious strain on her financially and killing her relationship with her boyfriend. Seems to meet classic addict behavior from what I can tell.
Anyone have any similar stories/opinions?

Well...I'm gonna guess that she's doing copious amounts of drugs at those shows

Am I right?

Sometimes yes but mostly no, and she's not a regular user of anything (exception marijuana)
It's like the actual concert is ridiculously important to her. I wouldn't link it to drugs.

Wikipedia defines addiction as:
...a state defined by compulsive engagement in naturally rewarding behavior or compulsive drug use, despite adverse consequences; it can be thought of as a disease or biological process leading to such behaviors.

If it is affecting her life, finances and relationships in adverse ways, then yes, I would say it could be an addiction. I would still link it with drug use as it's definitely a part of the scene in a huge way. It sounds like she is being shady in general so I wouldn't doubt that she is using way more drugs than she might be admitting.

:D

She has described the behavior as "moments of desperation" and "my escape from reality" etc.
like drugs will offer temporary escape from the problems one is faced with in reality, sounds like the festival experience is her way of escaping problems in her life. dunno whatever she is dealing with school, work, relationship, family problems ? find out what is causing this need to feel she has to have escape. not saying we don't need that from time to time, but there are other healthier/productive ways to feel better about yourself than to spend all your money on tickets.

hard to change habits... i know :\

to be honest; each and to his/or her own; when I hear something lame you'll all be glad to know I'm half way outta the window.
Minimal is ace Nootopics. The amount of tracks that are out there, i have to listen to 300 before they have a chance to make my set list. Then knowbody really cares anyways, coz their set in their ways.
| think it's call nostalgia or something.

We are learning more and more about "Process Addictions" everyday:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behavioral_addiction

Behavior persisting in spite of these consequences can be taken as a sign of addiction. The term "behavioral addiction" is not included in the new DSM-5 because, according to the authors, "there is insufficient peer-reviewed evidence to establish the diagnostic criteria and course descriptions needed to identify these behaviors as mental disorders."[8] Nonetheless, research on the neuroscience of addiction has demonstrated ΔFosB is the critical progenitor of behavioral and drug addictions, and that behavioral addictions arise from the same neural adaptations that induce drug addictions.[9][10][11]

Just like addiction and the disease concept, Medical Professions and Social Workers are starting to look at Behavioral Addictions as similar to Drug Addictions (think Gambling, Sex etc)

Also, I have seen people do plenty of stupid things to get into shows and raves. I use to myself, but that was because I was using alot in those environments as well. Eventually, I was using so much that I wasn't really able to attend those events anymore.... its crazy, I still feel extremely nostalgic about them and when I crave and think about using its often me remembering specific moments at a festival or show... I guess my addiction plays on those moments even though those days are long gone and have been for awhile. Its obvious that these moments are extremely impactful on myself to this day.

Also, I just have to ask, are you totally sure she is only using marijuana?
