I speak Mandarin and Cantonese, if you want to know, but most written Chinese languages are similar enough that it wouldn't make a difference.

I assume that's because the pictographs are pretty much the same & only have slight differences between the two languages. How much difference/similarity in the written form is there between the main Chinese languages & Japanese? Sorry if it's a bit of a 'you should know' question, but I've always had difficulties with languages (& the ones at school were all ones using latin script), so once it's not a Latin based language I don't have a clue (my wife is fluent in Hebrew and I don't have the foggiest where to start with it as I have no point of recognition to start at; with spoken Hebrew it's nowhere near as difficult - I'm still crap with it though!)

They're pretty different (chinese and japanese), well, the difference between say English and Dutch. Some of the kanji borrows heavily from Chinese, but on the whole if you can read Chinese you won't be able to easily be able to read Japanese too, but it's a lot easier picking up Japanese already knowing Chinese.

Thanks - it's one of those things I've wondered about after watching the odd Open University program about Japanese
Drugs in China
China has a flourishing chemical industry in all the precursors needed to synthetise Xstasy, meth etc. There is certainly a flourishing domestic industry for designer drugs.
When in Shanghai a massage girl (in one of the city's two main red-rope massage parlours) asked me what I liked beside sex. I said I liked discos with crazy music and I made a gesture imitating someone swallowing a pill. "Oh, said the girl, you like pills don't you?" Then she added "I like cocaine. I have cocaine at home". She'd said so in a casual tone. The impression was one of general availability and relative impunity. Still, I was only in Shanghai for two weeks, not long enough to get my bearings and assess the risk to me as a foreigner. I didn't take her up on her implicit offer.
Unlike some Asian countries, in China there's no "Stop drugs" or "Hang drug dealers" campaign afoot in the street or in the media. They probably don't want to scare foreigners too much, on whom they're dependent for economic support. That is, as long as Western media don't ruin the whole show with a few TV-programmes for the masses.
I suspect China is now a big importer of cocaine and that it will drive the price of cocaine up as it has driven up the price of oil.

The Chinese execute drug dealers in the thousands per year. They DO have a widespread campaign warning of this stance. I can only assume that you being in a 'holiday' city, it was tacitly allowed (or at least not persued as much).

I also heard that it was quite easy to obtain pre-cursers and other stuff quite easily from China. I went to a chineses pharm. website, I placed an order, and the response back was like 'You need to fill out special forms, since its a controlled substance in the USA.' I just gave up at that point. but, it did seem like it would be pretty easy to get a lot of stuff from there... This was a few years ago, and I probably wouldnt have gone thru with it even if i could have, Buying overseas has gotten very strict and its not worth the risk...

In a documentary on Discovery (USA channel) about China, they did a thing about a woman who worked as police... they videoed them pulling over a taxi driver (??) at a checkpoint (smuggling route) and said the driver would get the death penalty for transporting drugs.
