Well, I'm looking for a list of controlled substances in China: what is legal there and what is illegal. And please in English, not in Chinese. Can anyone help me with this request?

Do you live in China? I lived in China for four years and believe me, what's written into law and what really is law depends a lot more on who you know and how much money you have. But if you don't live in China things could be totally different. I'll see if I can do some research for you.

Well all the drugs listed in the UN convention on psychotropic substances should be controlled in China as a signatory to that convention, but whether these controls are enforced is another matter altogether (after all the Netherlands is a signatory yet cannabis isn't subject to the controls required by the UN document). I think hussness hit the nail on the head with the 'how much money/influence' you have issue. A better question would be how widespread is corruption in China regarding the manufacture of controlled drugs

It would be interesting to know more about the recreational drug culture in China. We all know the Chinese opium, but that's pretty much it.
After all China is a place where 1/6 of the world's population live ...

I heard its illegal in some city of China to play music with a repetitive beat in nightclubs (ie. techno or disco) because it encourages drug use.

Most of the drugs in China are concentrated in the Yunan province -- that's where they grow all the opium. Otherwise, anywhere along the route to Hong Kong you can find opium. A case in point would be Shenzhen. I lived in northern China, where drugs are virtually non-existent. Compared to the US the average control is a lot tighter, but there is also greater variance. In most of China drugs are virtually non-existent outside of the nightclub and underground music scene.
I should also add that marijuana is everywhere out west and from my estimation seems to be a completely accepted part of Tibetan culture. I remember being on a school trip once and we tried to rent horses from a bunch of Tibetan guys who were stoned. Turns out the horses were wild, and there were some disastrous effects once we tried to ride them.

If you're planning on importing, companies don't care!
Broad statement, but I have seen two orders go through that were questionable. Years ago I saw some company selling 2CB (illegal in the US at the time), but they were selling bulk and I assumed that they were a scam. Even if they weren't, it can't be a good idea trying to get 100 g of 2CB through the border.
Years later, I met someone who was getting all sorts of interesting things in bulk from china. Even cialis. I didn't expect him to give me the name of the company. But I asked if it was the one I was thinking of. confirmed. Never found out what the quality was like, but I suppose it was as good as any online vendor at the time. just 20 times cheaper.
The other order I saw was some kind of peptide reagent. The company suggested mislabeling the bottle on purpose, so that they would avoid patent infraction.

Well I was at Godskitchen in Shanghai a few months ago and I can assure you there was repetative music aplenty!
As for drugs, I'm unsure of legality but they're VERY easy to obtain and generally high quality.

The Chinese will pretty much sell you anything if you have the right contact as long as its for EXPORT. If your buying a lot, always ask for a certificate of analysis from an independant (western) source. Anyone with deep pockets & an enquiring mind can get custom synthesis on anything at quite a reasonable price. I got several quotes for Bromo Dragonfly and they were all within a few hundred $ of each other. The cheapest was $2600 for 50g.

Those Chinese speak in very stern terms about drugs but only 1 single ordinance covers import/export. I would BET that export of drugs not explicitly controlled wouldn't attract much attention. Why should it? Few countries are concerned with export unless the imporing country asks them.

China has more than one language, I assume you mean Mandarin? It's like saying do you speak British when there is more than one language spoken here, it's just that English is by far the most widely spoken (that's how to have lots of Welsh nationalists sending you lots of insulting PMs!)

I've written a formal letter to the Chinese embassy in London asking for an explicit list. I explained that I worked for a company that contracted Chinese companies to make research tools and didn't want to accidentaly ask for anything controlled. The worst they can do is nothing.
