I've just started (in the last 2 weeks) getting really intense headaches when I either lift heavy or come close to orgasm. These are pretty intense (and painfull) and cause me to have to take large rests between sets (or suffer a long headache post-coitus). Pretty much feels like my skull is going to implode. The pain is generally on either side of my head starting at my temples and moving back towards my ears.

I've read a bit about this and it seems fairly common with a couple of possible diagnosis. Worst case senario is that its a minor brain hemorage (8o). I'm going to check with my doc to see whether she recomends a CAT/MRI. More likely senarios are that it is a strained neck (although my neck generally feels fine), that I'm doing something odd with my breathing (which I will look into once I next hit the gym) or its a tension headache located around the sinus area at the base of my brain. The last one seems quite likely as when these headaches occur I start pushing more air out through my ears (like when I'm diving).

My family has a history of both strokes and high blood pressure so I'm a little concerned that this might be a permenant thing. Last time I checked my BP (over xmas) I was a little high but not extreme (like 145/87 or something)- havent done it since.

Like I said it only really occurs when I fuck or lift weights. I'm kinda afraid to do either though until I see a doc. Which sucks as those are pretty much my two favorate activities =D Yesterday I was doing legs and started getting headaches after my first warmup set. I got up to 120kg before stopping. It sucked though as my legs felt fine but felt like I might repture my brain if I went any higher. I reckon I could have easily beat my previous PB (140kg set around a month ago) if it wasn't for my head! I have felt light headed and dizzy before after heavy sets but not like this. Previouslly it would just be feeling a bit woozy and seeing stars whereas this was just pain.

Anyone had anything similar- or any advice?

Cant say I have.

The obvious question to ask is; whats changed (diet, supplements, lifestyle, sleep) wise around the time this started, if anything?

Maybe you've contracted some sort of head cold? I know when I get head colds I get some pretty weird things happening. Id definetly get to the doctor ASAP.

A friend of mine is having the same exact symptom upon orgasm. He says that he gets a painful headache that seems to reside in the back of his head/neck area when he hits orgasms lol, he said thats the only time it happens. I am not sure but I would assume it is something that is related to the nerves in the spinal area. He might have overtaxed his tendons and nerves their, so whenever his BP goes up to a certain point, he recieves an instant tension-related headache. This might occur until the inury subsides, I would recomend seeing a doctor though.

i got that one time in the gym. it was a horrible headache in the back of my head everytime i would lift. i took a week off and it just went away. try a little break.

ur getting headaches at times when your bloodvessles are dilated so it could be too much nitric oxide, if you're taking nitric oxide suppliments you could try cutting them out.

Sounds like you got high blood pressure, what supps are you on pre-workout?

Went to the doc and he sent me to hospital to check I wasn't about to have an anyeurism. That went ok (Lumbar Puncture and CT scan) showed no sign of blood. Blood Pressure was low/normal (125/67 ish for the whole time I was in hosp- about 9 hours).

They recon its "thunderclap headaches" quick onset migraines. They recon they will clear up by themselves and I will go through "spells" of them.

Probably going to hit the gym again in the next couple of days and work through if they happen again.

If I were you, I would give it a rest for a couple of more weeks. I know you will be ancy to get back to lifting but it might mean the difference between having the headaches for another week, or having them for another year. If they were concerned about anuerisms, maybe I should tell my freind to go to the doctor and get himself checked in the same fashion. That way he will know for sure that it isnt seious. Just for peace of mind
