WHEREAS, despite almost a century of prohibition, millions of Canadians today regularly consume marijuana and other cannabis products;

WHEREAS the failed prohibition of marijuana has exhausted countless billions of dollars spent on ineffective or incomplete enforcement and has resulted in unnecessarily dangerous and expensive congestion in our judicial system;

WHEREAS various marijuana decriminalization or legalization policy prescriptions have been recommended by the 1969-72 Commission of Enquiry into the Non-Medical Use of Drugs, the 2002 Canadian Senate Special Committee on Illegal Drugs, and the 2002 House of Commons Special Committee on the Non-Medical Use of Drugs;

WHEREAS the legal status quo for the criminal regulation of marijuana continues to endanger Canadians by generating significant resources for gang-related violent criminal activity and weapons smuggling – a reality which could be very easily confronted by the regulation and legitimization of Canada’s marijuana industry;

BE IT RESOLVED that a new Liberal government will legalize marijuana and ensure the regulation and taxation of its production, distribution, and use, while enacting strict penalties for illegal trafficking, illegal importation and exportation, and impaired driving;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a new Liberal government will invest significant resources in prevention and education programs designed to promote awareness of the health risks and consequences of marijuana use and dependency, especially amongst youth;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a new Liberal government will extend amnesty to all Canadians previously convicted of simple and minimal marijuana possession, and ensure the elimination of all criminal records related thereto;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a new Liberal government will work with the provinces and local governments of Canada on a coordinated regulatory approach to marijuana which maintains significant federal responsibility for marijuana control while respecting provincial health jurisdiction and particular regional concerns and practices.

Mixxed feelings about this. I love the fact they want to make it legal. I don't love the fact they want to tax it. Government always go overboard with taxes. Currently the price of medicinal marijuana is cheaper per oz than black market, but it sucks. I'd assume something like this would bring in dispensiaries and what not. But I really don't want to be paying any more for trips/quads than I am currently, as I do actually need it medicinally.

For those who don't know - Canada currently has a majority conservative government just elected in last May. A Majority government holds control for 5 years, so next Federal Election won't be until May 2016. Long ways away, but I think this is a good start in the right direction (hey, maybe the tories will get jealous of all the supporters gained by the Liberals and decide to do it themselves!)

I'm happy to see that "legalization" is replacing "decriminalization" in legislative language. Many places with decriminalized marijuana have more arrests and more repression than before.

I love the fact they want to make it legal. I don't love the fact they want to tax it.
The costs of operating in a black market that you will no longer have to pay for might go a fair way to counteracting the tax. If not- it's fucking Canada, and it's legal, I'm sure it won't be hard to find untaxed weed.

This looks like a step in the right direction, im wondering if they do legalize weed what will happen with pre-employment drug tests? they cant deny you a job for smoking cigarettes i wonder if theyll try to for smoking weed even when its legal?

It's about time for our government to have the guts (if you will) to directly or indirectly say, "we don't care about U.S. Drug Lawmakers' policies and opinions towards marijuana and the probability of it being legalized in Canada."

Will that happen with Harper as PM? Not a chance (imo) - but one can hope... and vote Liberal.

I'll believe it when i fucking see it happen. Though we where going in the right direction before the liberals lost and that cock sucking western knuckle dragger got in and then Canada became a neo-cons wet dream. Fucking traitors :! . As much as i hate the liberals they are a shade better then the conservatives that's for sure. Ive never had medical weed but Ive heard it's absolute shit granted you can get sativex here if you are lucky enough to afford it or have insurance that covers it.

And no there's none of that bullshit here with companies not hiring smokers. Yet anyway :|

Honestly, I think almost everyone in Canada hates ALL the pollitical parties. Prior to this I was a supporter of the NDP as I find healthcare and education top priorities. With this though, along with the Liberal's wanting to fix our broken healthcare system and made education more affordable and accessable, they definitely have my vote come election time.

I am someone who actually needs medicinal marijuana for pain. (Yes, need. Opiates do not work on me due to a natural tolerance, NSAIDs will cause my inflammed colon to hurt and bleed a significant amount more than it does already, physio only makes me hurt more once the physio is over.) Do I have it? Not yet. I've only filled out, something like 75 pages of the first application booklet (signed by a medical professional where need be), which when it gets sent in will take up to 18 months before they acknowledge the fact I have sent an application in at which point I fill out some more forms and send them in which will take up to another 6 months before I find out if I will get the MMAR License or not. The system right now is fucked beyond belief and needs to be changed.

As for companies not hiring smokers - I have a feeling that may be in my near future. Albertans (for some god awful reason) just elected a new leader of the conservative party and thus a new Premier of Alberta. She plans to introduce a tax HIKE (yes hike not increase) on Cigarettes and Alcohol, stating "if people choose to sin they should be the ones responsible for funding the healthcare and other social services" its really just another reason to vote Liberal and *NOT CONSERVATIVE* in the next election.

We're going to hell in a handbasket :( The liberals are getting my vote this year, and i havent voted since years.But we need to de-throne king harper, what a fucking douche.He should just move to the usa.

We should do what (i think it was) portugal did and make personal possesion of all drugs legal, then take the billions invested in this retarded drug war and put it to good use by building rehab centers and promoting harm reduction, theyve been seeing positive results and the percentage of addicts is declining because of it.

I think of few of you in this thread should check out the wikileaks US embassy cables concerning Canada. Talks about praises for Harper and shows how interested the American intelligence community is with Canada and our drug laws, even our protests.

Pisses me off to see how ripe American influence is all over the world. (I love you americunts but I'm sure you agree your government sucks)

Legalizing drugs in any country is a tricky issue when said country has signed International UN agreements concerning drug laws. I believe that this is what kept the Netherlands from full out legalizing "soft drugs" (dont quote me on that though)

Honestly alot of Alberta is as backwards as the worst parts of the US. It was abit of a culture shock when i lived out there for abit and i was glad to be gone from the place. Between the neo-conservatism and the "i hate everyone who is not Albertan or a redneck" attitude that you get with some circles of people out there the place didn't exactly have anything that made me like it. Maybe it was just because i lived in one of the worst ghettos in Edmonton that made me hate the place i dunno. Also is it just me or does every fucking job in Alberta require a drug test? I wouldn't doubt that if any province manages to let companies dictate whether their employees can or cannot smoke it would be Alberta.

Fuck i remember a few of them getting pissy when i said i was goin home and goin on ei, sayin they pay for it lol.My response was "you guys keep workin so i dont have to.". All i seem to hear is "derp derp east coasters tookt are jobs derp de derp"

I agree ^.

In primary school everyone I knew thought USA was the best and free, fun country.
Now every day I come to realize more and more that the USA's policies are doing a disservice to other countries, how they still have so much control over the world, and seem to think they're above everyone.

Yeah i hate all Canadian political parties that's for sure. The NDP are nothing more then champagne socialists who are elitist cunts but atleast they are better then the conservatives. I'll be voting ABC as always which stands for anyone but conservative lol

Have you tried sativex yet? I would love to try that to see if it would actually work for my neuropathic pain since the morphine alone does not cover it so i am prescribed gabapentin along with it which does not help as much as id like. So Cannabis helps alot that's for sure and I'm lucky to always have access to hash since i find indica to help more for pain then the sativa strains.

Yeah they don't like us much out there do they? They especially seem to have a special hatred for anyone from the rock which i take as a compliment as it's not my fault they are jealous of us =D

my buddy in edmonton is prescribed sativex all he did was tell his doctor he tried it for his back pain and it worked, and one of his friends found him a doctor who for a $500 'donation' will get you your med marijuana card.
