Lexapro for Anxiety

I never really stuck with an SSRI, only tried the "trial pack" of PaxilCR once and didn't notice much.

The trial packs only contain enough tablets for 14 days. Generally it takes 6-8 weeks before you achieve the optimal effects from SSRI antidepressants, such as Paxil, so you really weren't taking the Paxil long enough to notice the benefits. Lexapro also belongs to the SSRI antidepressant family so you may need to take it for at least 6 weeks before you notice any benefits.

Anyway, lately I have been avoiding things I need to be doing because I'll get all paranoid for stupid reasons. Even family memebers I haven't seen in awhile...I get anxious before I see them or avoid it all together. Certain phone calls I avoid because I'll get all caught up in the throat and my heart starts racing...thoughts flying through my mind about how I apprear to other people and don't want to act nervous...I sometimes feel really anti-social...even though I love going out and having crazy nights with friends/meeting girls. It's been alot harder when I avoid doing these things because of the anxiety...and that leads me to feeling some depression as well.

My symptoms of anxiety were very similar to what you just described. I have never taken Lexapro but have tried many others, including Paxil, which helped to a certain degree with the depression but not really the symptoms of my anxiety, which was also situational. When I became aware that a major event or something new was coming ahead I would immediately build up really bad anxiety that got worse the closer it came to the event. When the event came up I would also either avoid it or face it with horrible anxiety and nearly panic. But usually after the event I realize that it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought that it would be but I would never recognize this and continue to feel the same way when new events or situations would occur. Having to be the center of attention was especially bad, I would get really paranoid that people were always judging me. I am currently on Remeron with Xanax and no longer suffer anxiety or depression. Not everybody reacts the same to particular antidepressants, you need to find one that woks best for you.

My psychiatrist is currently prescribing me .25mg Xanax pills to take for especially bad situations...but he said Lexapro was a really awesome drug for anxiety and that I wouldn't get anticipatory anxiety anymore and is much better than the outdated "paxil, zoloft, prozac" and such...with less withdrawl if you stop taking it too.

Lexapro will produce just as bad withdrawal symptoms as any other of the SSRI antidepressants. No SSRI is 'better' than other SSRI antidepressants. People don't all react the same to a particular antidepressant. Paxil may show no improvements for one person but be a life saver for somebody else. If everybody reacted the same, only one antidepressant would be on the market.

I don't want to get bad side-effects or become dependent on any medication though.

I would be more worried about becoming dependent upon the Xanax than the Lexapro. Try to take it only as needed. If you get into the habit of taking it on a daily basis for every new situation that you encounter you risk becoming physically dependent upon the Xanax and benzodiazepine addiction is nothing less than horrible, especially Xanax. The withdrawals can be much worse than Heroin and other opioids. Some of the withdrawal symptoms include muscle spasms, convulsions, sweating, night sweats, severe depression and increased anxiety, tremor, shocks, muscle weakness, "jelly legs", agitation, panic attacks and even life threatening seizures (from prolonged use) just to name a few.

Laughin, just tell the doc that the .25 isn't working and you find yourself taking 3 or 4 of the pills (one ever 45 minutes) in order to get results. Tell him that when you do take these pills, you feel only slightly sedated, your anxiety is completely gone, and you are able to function perfectly. Ask him if it's alright to get an increase in dosage and if that's what he thinks should be done. Try to act as innocent as possible and make him truly believe you.... just a little acting.

I would have to agree. I think that benzodiazepines should only be used on an as needed basis unless you aren't worried about addiction but .25mg is a very low dose and if it isn't really effective for your symptoms than you may just need to ask your physician for a possible dose increase, but continue to take on an as needed basis. Just a thought.

P.S. I started on a daily 2mg Xanax regimen (.5mg morning, .5mg afternoon, 1mg night) and a couple years later I'm now taking 8mg daily (2mg morning, 2mg, noon, 2mg afternoon, 2mg evening) and 90mg Restoril at night for sleep (another benzodiazepine). I was taking 12mg daily at the height of my addiction and it was hell just getting down to 8mg/daily. If I miss a day without a dose of Xanax I start to experience some really nasty physical withdrawals. 2-3 days and I start to get mild convulsions, horrible muscle spasms, hallucinations, excessive sweating, bad tremor...and I could go on and on but basically I can't function.

Just be careful...

^Agreed. My benzo tolerance is nothing even approaching K'd Out's, but .25 wouldn't even put a dent in my panic attacks. I need 1 mg of Xanax for acute panic reactions and I am on .5 mg Klonopin daily.

I'm prescribed 25 1 mg Xanax and 30 1 mg Klonopin every month but when I take that much I get horribly forgetful and oversleep. I take the Xanax as needed. The Klonopin is for generalized anxiety and I take half a pill every morning and the other half in the afternoon if I feel I need it, which much of the time I don't.

The last thing you want to deal with is panic disorder and being addicted to benzos. Yes, they can be fun, really fun, but if they're prescribed to you for a medical problem you should probably avoid partying with them...

I've been prescribed Lexapro but I haven't started taking it yet. I do not think SSRIs agree with me; I tried Paxil (which made me feel like I was on a horrendous speed comedown even in a half dose) and Zoloft (which made me randomly burst into tears at work over absolutely nothing a couple years ago).

The anti-d I've had the best results with was Wellbutrin. The side effects were even more than manageable - it improved my concentration, shot my sex drive absolutely through the roof, I lost weight because unhealthy things started to taste bad (I still can't stand sweet food) and 1 beer felt like 10. I was a little concerned about getting seizures but with the amount of Klonopin I'm on, it's probably unlikely. It made me a little jittery and has been known to increase anxiety, but I've also cut out caffeine since then and it lifted my mood so well that I think I could compensate.

I'm still considering starting the Lexapro but I still have several refills on my Wellbutrin script so maybe I'll try that.

Keep us posted on how you're doing. Panic attacks are a hell I wouldn't wish on anyone, and most people who have never had one do not understand how debilitating they can be. I find that breathing exercises and identifying triggers are also helpful. If I know I'm going to be on crowded public transportation or driving over a large bridge (there are 3 around my city) I make sure I'm medicated enough to handle it without being overmedicated.

I have taken Paxil, Prozac, Luvox and Lexapro...in that order. Paxil worked great for social anxiety situations. Made me not give a fuck what people thought of me or what i said...which was a good thing. Ther withdrawals from Paxil are pretty bad, though, and it knocked my dick in the dirt, big time.
Prozac is prozac, nothing special. Lexapro is what i am taking now. I have been on SSRI's for 10 years now, so i forgot what is was like to be without them. I can't vouch for/against withdrawals of Lexapro becasue i haven;t stoppeds taking them. I think any SSRI is going to have shitty withdrawals if you've been taking them for 10 years.

DexterMeth...
Yeah, part of me knows your right about just "jumping in." Things always aren't as bad as you expect them to be...but the anxiety just seems to self-defeat. I get very nasty anticipatory anxiety before lots of different things...I'm talking like DAYS prior to the unsettling event. When I start concentrating on myself too much...it just makes the anxiety I'm feeling more apparent and it gets even worse. I agree...I wouldn't wish clinical anxiety on my worst enemy. Having a panick attack in front of a classroom full of people is one of the worst feelings in the world. :(

klast...
I want to try clonazepam sometime...xanax is great but it seems so short lasting to me. So xanax/lexapro was a good and safe combo? I just saw the movie "Sideways" and the main character said he was prescribed xanax and lexapro lol. Kinda caught my attention.

K'dOUT...
Thanks for all the input man! Before I registered here I always enjoyed reading your posts. I totally know how you feel with the anticipation and anxiety...what you described is very very similar to what I experience. So...what is this Remeron? Can't say I've ever heard of it. I'll take your advice and really try to limit my benzo use. It's hards when they are sitting right there in front of you and you feel anxious...but at the same time you know that using a substance to remain completely anxiety-free is a recipe for dependence. It's funny...even after I finished a bottle of sixty of the .25mg's in nine days...I still got minor withdrawls this one night. I remember laying in bed trying to sleep but I couldnt. Thoughts were racing through my mind and I was pretty anxious for no apparent reason. And this was only in nine days of use...never taking more than 1mg at a time and no more than 2mg in an entire day. And damn, 12mg/day...that's pretty impressive. Amazing how tollerance builds isn't it? It takes me 1mg to get a decent effect from alprazolam...and if I take more than 2mg/day I get mild memory loss.

wastedwalrus...
What you advised to say to my doctor is pretty much the truth of the situation. I need like 4 to get the desired level of sedation...and then my anxiety is almost completely gone. Hopefully he will up the dose to 1mg. I would even be happy with .5mg's if he still gave me the script for 60 (with 2 refills)

mariposa420...
How does one acquire a script for two different benzos? Do you take the xanax for acute situations, and the clonazepam for all-day anti-anxiety? I'm almost thinking that even though I'm only 21...I might cut back on drinking alot and just use a xanax when I go out and party. I get MUCH less side-effects and negative physical aftereffects from xanax compared to alcohol. I think alcohol is really damaging in comparison so I can only see taking xanax instead being helpful. Wellbutrin sounds helpful as well, although I still have to do more research I suppose.

dingo dave...
You've tried 3 other ssri's, but what do you think of lexapro so far?

This Friday I can finally renew my alprazolam script. I'm going to be more resourceful with this batch (meaning, not eating the whole bottle in 9 days :D). Keep in mind they are the stupid .25's

Do psychiatrists typically allow their patient to be on both xanax and lexapro?

Oh well this is just great. About 3 weeks ago the pharmacy told me I would have to wait until the 24th to refill the script...and now they are like "no you have to wait until the 30th because it's a controlled drug" or some shit. I was really expecting to have an inhibition-free weekend but thanks to more bullshit that's not gonna happen.

[Escitalopram--second generation of serotonin transporter inhibitors?]

Rybakowski J, Borkowska AB.

Escitalopram is the first antidepressant introduced according to chirality rules, it is an S-enantiomer of citalopram, the drug which has been used for many years. Experimental studies showed that the property of serotonin transporter inhibition--one of the main mechanisms of antidepressive action is connected with the S-enantiomer of citalopram, and that escitalopram is the most selective inhibitor of this transporter. The results of most clinical studies in patients with depression show significant superiority of escitalopram, 10-20 mg/day, over placebo, as early as within the first week of treatment, and a faster onset of action and higher therapeutic efficacy of escitalopram, compared to citalopram, 20-40 mg/day. A similar efficacy of escitalopram, 10 mg/day, and sertraline 50-200 mg/day, as well as escitalopram, 20 mg/day, and venlafaxine, 225 mg/day was demonstrated. It has also been shown that escitalopram, 10-20 mg/day, exerts therapeutic efficacy in general anxiety disorder, panic disorder and social phobia. Escitalopram may meet many criteria for the optimal antidepressant. The drug is efficacious in depressions of various intensity, has a rapid onset of action and, in long-term treatment, prevents the relapses of the illness. It exerts therapeutic activity in anxiety disorders. The dosing is convenient, and the drug is safe and well tolerated due to a mild profile of side-effects and favorable pharmacokinetic properties. Further studies are needed, aiming e.g. at the comparison of the therapeutic efficacy of escitalopram with other antidepressant drugs in different patients and the assessment of the effect of the drug on cognitive functions. The results of such studies may provide a convincing answer to the question whether escitalopram can be regarded as an antidepressant drug belonging to the second generation of serotonin transporter inhibitors.

I feel you laughin.... have you ever gotten a full blown panic attack? Jesus fucking christ it's horrible. It's like your nerves have been fried by a high voltage of electricity, your gut is turning, you get these sudden flashes of unbearable heat and you get this undescribable feeling of dread.... Sometimes I don't know what the dread feeling is or where it came from. Anyways, xanax always.... ALWAYS eliminates this and lays me at ease. If the pharmacy and your doc give you a hard time you can always self-medicate and find some xanax yourself but you shouldn't abuse them. Or even use them recreationally for that matter but only if you need them when the pharmacy won't refill your script. By the way, if lexapro doesn't work for you I HIGHLY recommend Wellbutrin... it's doing wonders for me.

Of course benzos work, but the addiction is nasty, nasty, nasty.

Anyway, my insurance doesn't cover Cymbalta anymore, and I think SSNRIs are making my anxiety worse.

If they don't cover Cymbalta, is something like Lexapro likely to be covered? Also, could I recommend it to my doc by name without him asking 'blah, blah blah why do you think this would be more effective'/etc.? I mean, it's obviously not recreational, but docs still would probably wonder why I knew anything more about medicine than a 9-year old?

Yeah, in fact the first few episodes of panick attacks I experienced were for no reason whatsoever. I was in junior high at the time, and my friend and I went to see a movie. I was just sitting there and my heart started beating so fast and I couldn't stop moving around and didn't know what to do with all of my energy. I had to leave and just walk around the lobby. So yeah I definately know how you feel wastedwalrus...I'm just glad that they don't typically come out of NOWHERE anymore...moreso for situations that I am anticipating to cause anxiety. Well I'm seeing the doc tomorrow and I'll definately recommend an increase in the xanax dose...and tell him I researched and decided to give the lexapro a try. I'll let you all know how it goes...and I really appreciate all the help I've gotten from starting this thread.

Well he gave me 135mg of alprazolam. They are in .5mg pills...90 a bottle with 3 refills. I'm pretty happy with this since I know I'm going to limit my usage to times I really need them.

He is also starting me off on 5mg of lexapro to take every day. I told him I want to start at a low dose...just to mildly lift my everyday anxiety and depression and make me a little more optimistic and motivated.

I'm really hoping I can get my life in order now and start doing the things I need to be doing to enjoy my early 20's. The past two years have been horrible and I feel this is a justified approach at getting me out of this mess. My psychiatrist seems very cool by the way.

Thanks again everyone...bluelight is really awesome and I'm glad I found this place. Keep me updated on how you guys/girls are doing with your anxiety/depression and whatnot.

Time to crash...it's been a long day 8o

:|

^bump

The xanax he prescribed me "take .5mg three times a day" I think I might stick to this...but I would almost rather take a day off every once in awhile to keep tollerance down and to acquire a bigger stash so I can have the occasional "recreational benzo" experience at parties and such so I don't have to drink in order to be sociable.

I can hit on girls alot better with xanax than alcohol...expecially considering how alcohol fucks with my performance ;)

I took my first 5mg lexapro this morning, and by 10:00AM I already started feeling more sociable and talkative and it wasn't even from the xanax I don't think. Hopefully it's not placebo...but I've felt great today. No anxiety at all at work this morning :D

Update...

I'm on day 2 of the 5mg lexapro...and believe it or not I'm already feeling SOOO much more optimistic and sociable. I've been willingly starting up conversations with co-workers I would normally be shy around. Everything seems so much more beatiful...and even though it says on the bottle "may cause drowsiness"...I am feeling more chill I suppose...BUT I'M BEING SO MUCH MORE PRODUCTIVE! I'm doing stuff I needed to get done for awhile and now I'm able to do it in style ;)

I'll keep you guys in touch with what's going on, you've all been so cool and helpful and I really appreciate it :)

I've been reading a lot about benzo's and knew I'd rather have some xanax for every 2 or 3 days when I need it and I wouldn't take any antidepressant he prescribes so I managed to get 60 mg xanax and 150 mg valium and it works great for social anxiety.

I still don't see how Forest Pharm. can honestly peddle Lexapro as being the "optimal antidepressant" implying that citalopram - being racemic - is such a different beast than the S-enantiomer... I always thought that the R-enantiomer was pretty much inactive, both in terns of its psychiatric effects AND any physical/emotional/mental side effects [at least I've read a few things along those lines]. Seemed like Lexapro was just twice as potent as Celexa, nothing more, nothing less. Can anyone out there point me in the right direction of some papers demonstrating that there is a reasonable, logical, non-profit-driven, pharmacologic NEED to eliminate the R-enantiomer from the preparation of citalopram?

This feels like a miracle, I can't even begin to describe how much more confident, optimistic, happy, smooth-talking, efficient, and relaxed I feel.

I'm only on day 3 of the 5mg's. I can't believe how quickly it's boosting my serotonin levels! It seems like that's all I need to get the daily mood lift and anti-anxiety effects I was desiring. Lexapro seems WAY better than paxilCR.

Fisherman...the way I understand it and from what my doctor explained...escitaprolam is much more potent at smaller doses because the enantiomer of the parent compound is even more selective at targeting only the psychoneurological serotonin receptor sights.

I'm getting mild side-effects such as minor smomach/intestinal disturbance. But it's not bad at ALL. Especially compared to 5-htp and Paxil/Prozac. I'm very thankful that I'm not getting any appetite supressant effects since I'm skinny enough as it is.

And the xanax is definatley taking the edge off any residual anxiety that the lexapro isn't inhibiting "yet".

So just to let you guys know, the lexapro seems to be working great. And I have faith that the effects will get even better over next month and course of my treatment. :) See, there's some of that optimism I was talking about :D
