Lexapro for Anxiety

Woa, glad to hear so many success stories with Lexapro!

I'm still doing drugs even though I'm on the lexapro...but it seems to make me need less of them to get even higher. As in...I'll take a few hits of dank and I'll be much higher than if I hadn't taken the lexapro. Maybe there is a correlation beteween the increased serotonin circulating in your bloodstream, interacting with the THC?

It gives me less cravings for alcohol too, which is nice. But I still find myself drinking, but at more appropriate times. I've taken small amounts of opiates (as in, 2.5 or 5mg hydrocodone...lol...I'm sensitive to them :D) Also, I take the xanax basically everyday. I'm also prescribed Inderal, but I use it much less these days because my anxiety and depression are basically completely eliminated.

i cant understand why some people who are on anti depressents are still doing drugs. the whole purpose to take them is to get better. they are never gonna work if your still partying. it deafeats the whole purpose.

That's a huge generalization and assumption to make. Not everyone is partying. Some of us do only psychedelics, and rarely.

The lexapro is still working it's magic. I notice it's effects less than when I first started taking it...but I still have a very noticable positive mood change.

When I stop taking the xanax, the lexapro isn't enough to stop the physical symptoms of the anxiety.

Should I tell my psychiatrist to switch me from 1.5mg xanax/day.......to like 2mg clonazepam? The xanax just wears off so quick...I'm only prescribed 3 of the .5mg orange IR tabs a day.

I'm on my last refill, and once I visit him...if he doesn't refill the xanax or switch me to clonazepam I'll be somewhat worried. Especially because I feel I still want to be on it even though he said "hopefully you won't have to be on the xanax long"

But he sounds open to my choices...so hopefully he'll hook it up with some more benzo's so I can play my game like a pro. Especially considering I just got a huge promotion and am going to be pretty stressed for the next couple months...

Hey LaughinFit, how are you doing with the Lexapro? I'm coming off Paxil withdrawal and I feel wired and geared up all day and I have insomnia. I can't sleep unless I pop a Zopiclone. I am going to phone my doctor tomorrow and see if I can get an appointment before the weekend and ask him if I can try Lexapro (Cipralex here in Canada). I won't go back to that Paxil bullshit it turned me into an idiot.

Anyway, update me on how you are doing with the Lex.

It's going great! I actually have an appt. today with my psych. I really hope he gives me another script for the xanax if I ask for it. My 3 refills ran out...and I want to up my dose to 2mg/day in divided doses. Wish me luck!

To give you a small idea of it it's working or not...I just got promoted in the Accounting deptartement and jumped out of a plane @ 13,000 feet last weekend :)

Paxil blows, I agree. I have a feeling the lexapro will help you...let me know how it works out!

is there anyone here who does see a psych without insurance? See I don't have insurance and don't know if I can afford a psych.. don't they charge you a few hundred a visit?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Well, I just got back from the doctor. Got my sample pack of Cipralex (Lexapro), and since my anxiety is so bad right now with the physical symptoms, my doc gave me a prescription for 40 tabs of xanax (0.5mg) with 3 refills... I'm hoping to just use the xanax until the cipralex kicks in so I don't become dependent. Stupid me, I took a 1 50mg 5htp yesterday, so I hope I will be ok to start on the Cipralex tomorrow. Today is day 16 off Paxil. Keep me updated LaughinFit... I'm hoping this cipralex will bring me out of this crippled GAD emotional state.

I've been on Lexapro for 2 months, 10mg a day. I've found that it hasn't helped my panic problem that much. Mainly, what i've noticed about it is a feeling of apathy towards things that would usually upset/depress me. I don't give a shit about mostly everything.

I'm on 20mg/day (one pill in the morning) of the Lexapro.

I officially have the coolest psychiatrist. I've been to three others, along with regular doctors...and they all sucked in comparison. For the past few months, I've been paying only the co-pay so it's cheap...but I'm switching insurance companies so I will have to pay in full until the switch takes place. It's $30/visit with insurance for me, not sure how bad it is w/o yet (gasp! haha)

He's a super chilled out dude in his mid thirties and is cool as hell and very intelligent at the same time. And he gives me freedom with my choices in my medications, so I like him alot hahah

DjTaZZ, how many mg of lexapro is he giving you with the sample pack? Good job on getting the xanax...I'm surprised he just offered it to you. It wasn't a good idea to take the 5-htp...but I don't think it will hurt. I used to take it all the time, but it is SOOO non-selective compared to lexapro. I started getting NASTY digestive problems after taking it for awhile. I'm glad you dropped the Paxil, that shit sucks. Lexapro, however...I'm sure you'll benefit from. Although, everyone is different. I have virtually no side effects anymore...and the xanax takes care of my physiological anxiety. The lexapro is more of a psychological mood boost and I become more sociable and energetic/ambition/happy/etc...

Good luck to all you out there with chronic or situational or generalized anxiety. It's fucking horrible if you haven't experienced it...and I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy.

LaughinFit: He gave me two sample packs of 10mg, and he told me to start with 5mg for 6 days, and then up it to 10mg. If needed later, I will probably get a prescription for 20mg. My doctor is really cool, I don't see a psych, but my doctor will pretty much write me what I want. I was the one who suggested the Cipralex and then right away he grabbed two sample packs for me, and he said I was his first patient to try it. (Its only been approved in Canada for three months). Anyway, I admit, Paxil did help a lot with my anxiety, but it turned me into a maniac and an Alcoholic and I would start fights with everyone. I don't think the 5htp should matter anyway, since I took only 50mg of it 1 time just a day and a half ago, so it should be gone by now. I took my last Paxil dose 16 days ago, and I asked my doc if there would be any contradiction since I only took it 16 days ago and he said no, not at all. I'm just hoping this Lexapro kicks in a lot faster than Paxil, because Paxil took like a fuckin month before I felt actual relief from it, or a good 3 weeks anyway. My doc was going to give me more ativan, but ativan I find doesn't do much at all for my panic/anxiety, so he suggested xanax instead. But its funny because 0.5mg Xanax doesn't really touch my anxiety. I have to take at least three of themso (1.5mg) to get relief and I don't really have a benzo tolerance at all. I've only tryed Ativan off and on the sublingual 0.5mg which didn't do shit unless i popped like 5 of them. I've tryed Clonazepam before at high doses like 6mg a day, and all I got was a mild relaxation. Benzo's don't affect me too much it seems like, but it could be due to my GHB usage before.

Anyway - does Lexapro take away some of that generalized anxiety/panicky feelings? I'm hoping so because I can't take this shit much longer and I start College next Tuesday!

Thanks for update and support LaughinFit, I appreciate it.

You're helping me just as much as I'm helping you! That's why I started this thread, we're all learning from one another.

The Lexapro starts working in only 7 days (3 in my case!!!)...compared to other SSRI's which can take up to a month to start working. It also is one of the most selective SSRI's, so smaller doses and less side effects.

The Lexapro helps my depression and mood more than it does panick attacks or physiological anxiety. The Xanax takes care of that though ;)

Hope it works well for you! Keep in touch everyone, and have a fucking awesome 3 day weekend and party it up!!!

Well, Today is day 3 on 5mg Cipralex (Lexapro) - so far I haven't noticed much of a difference other than some mild side effects (dry mouth, increased anxiety). I heard that the increased anxiety is normal at first, because this is how it was with Paxil, and with Paxil for me it took about a full month before I started to see any benefits from it. Anyway, my doc gave me a prescription for Xanax (0.5mg) 40 tabs with 3 refills, and I've already used about 13 pills in 4 dayz :( because of my severe anxiety lately, ever since I quit taking Paxil. I also gave my dad two of my Xanax (0.5mg) because he was desperate for some anxiety relief at the time... anyway, I have 25.5mg Xanax left until my prescription runs out and I just got it filled on Sept.1st. I don't want to go through these fast, but the past 3-4 days I have been using 1.5mg nightly within a 3 hour period, and last night I took 2mg (little higher dose because I was at a family reunion). I just hope this Cipralex kicks in soon so I don't have to become dependent on Xanax. I've never taken Xanax before in my life, this is my first time thank god.. but I don't find I get much relief unless I take at least 1.25mg-1.5mg Xanax! The only other benzo's I've used off an on are Ativan 0.5mg (which I had to take like 3-4 to get any relief) and Clonazepam 2mg off an on, but NEVER daily. Lately, I been using the Xanax daily though, and that worries me. I don't want to become dependent on these. With Paxil, I hardly ever had to use Benzo's, I would just use GHB as my party drug occasionally instead.. ;) But lately, I can't sleep regulary unless I take a Zopiclone or some Xanax. LaughinFit, do you feel you've developed dependence to Xanax? and how fast have you gone through Xanax?

Thanks a lot bro, I really appreciate it. I need all the help I can get here lately, and you've been great and so has soundphaRM and many others.

Do any of you taking this med feel apathetic towards life in general? I'm on 10mg a day for general anxiety/panic "disorder". I definately feel less prone to panic attacks/anxiety in the 3 months i've been on it, but it also has kind of dulled my emotions in general. Something that would normally upset me/set me off (i.e. relationship troubles), now just passes through my mind, completely devoid of emotion. While that can be a good thing at times, I also have noticed a general feeling of discontent and loss of motivation. Things that once excited or motivated me now just kind of bore me and fail to motivate me.

DAMN im pissed. I just had a damn post written up and I hit some button and erased it. So in less detail here it is again.
I was taking 60 mgs of cymbalta for 8 days. On the 6th day I had a wierd vivid dream. It kept cycleing and I would wakeup or just snap myself out of it and remind myself it was just a dream. Yesterday I finally saw a doc and he put me on 10 mgs Lexapro and 5 mgs of valium and told me to see a psych. Last night my dreams were viscious. They were the same kinda cycling dreams I had a few days ago but 50 x more intense and nightmares. When I woke up I almost felt mind fucked.
I dont think the cymbalta had 2 much to do with it but it coulda. I just did some reading and people report nightmares during withdrawl but normaly just wierd dreams during the usage. Has anyone else had these type of intense nightmares during the first day or so of starting on lexapro? Luckily I went to a good doc and he gave me a couple of weeks of samples to see if it works out.

when i started taking lexapro i was having really vivid dreams but it goes away. lexapro works really good.

Give Lexapro a two-month trial and see how you feel, I'm on 30mg daily and I feel better than I have in years. I take it in combination with 3mg Xanax daily and the combo works perfectly with relatively no side effects at all.

went to the doctor today about my current anxiety situation, and was prescribed lexapro. I'm gonna give it a shot and see how it goes. I really wish he would have put me on klonopin or something as needed, but like my last doctor who tried to put me on effexor, was almost completly against benzos. They really do come in handy in certain situations ( I've got bad situational anxiety myself). Why are so many doctors against prescribing them as needed. Its not like I want to take them everyday.
