I'm on lexapro 20mg and avanza 60mg. I saw my psychiatrist recently in a terrible way and he urged me to increase my lexapro from 20mg to 25mg. The idea was that, because it's the middle of the uni semester and too much shit is going on, and because I'm so fucked up already, there wasn't enough time to come off one med and start up on another. So he just suggested I increase the lexapro.

He said that the highest official dose is 20mg, but that he has several patients on up to 40mg, and that he's seen positive results from exceeding the recommended maximum dose.

So my question is whether anyone else has gone above 20mg? Or whether I should cease either the lexapro or the avanza and try a different med. I'm depressed and anxious as shit and having huge trouble functioning/doing the most simple things. I am about 75 days clean from bupe.

I was prescribed 40mg and had a negative experience where I attempted suicide the day I went from 20mg to 40mg. But my psychiatrist thinks I may be schizophrenic, so that could explain it.

By increasing your dose of any SSRI, you risk serotonin syndrome. This can be quite debilitating (google search it for more info). That being said, a 5 mg increase is very small so it doesn't pose much risk. I suggest you follow your psychiatrist's advice, as he does have quite a bit more medical expertise than I do. Best of luck to you; I know battling anxiety/depression is quite difficult.

Yeah...I think I can probably assume that he knows what he's doing. He's the one who advised that I increase to 25mg.

I just don't understand how I can be on 2 anti-depressants and still so fucking depressed. I think I may need to have ECT or something, but I'm just terrified of the memory loss.

You might want to do some cognitive behavioral therapy or other medications before doing something as drastic as ECT my man. That procedure is a crazy one.

Yes, it would be an excellent idea to do some self-examination and figure out the root cause of your depression rather than go rushing to medication and ECT. More often than not, depression is a psychosocial issue and not a neurochemical one.

What do you think caused the suicide attempt? I mean, did you have dread or were you out of control?
