The Drug Enforcement Administration declared on Friday that it would temporarily reassign acetyl fentanyl — commonly known as "fake heroin" — as a Schedule I drug, a designation reserved for the most dangerous substances.

In a statement, the DEA said the move was "necessary to avoid an imminent hazard to the public safety." The drug, which is up to 15 times stronger than heroin, has been blamed for at least 39 overdose deaths since it was first identified by a government laboratory two years ago. But, the DEA says, reports of emergency room admissions due to overdoses are probably underreported because it's so hard to differentiate from heroin.

Before the DEA's declaration, the drug existed in something of a legal grey area: It was considered illicit, but it was still technically legal as long as it bore a label that read, "Not for human consumption." By rescheduling it, the government has changed that.

According to the DEA, chemically similar drugs emerged on the West Coast where they were "trafficked and abused" in the late 1970s and 1980s. The acetyl fentanyl known today was first identified in Maine in 2013. Reports of the drug nearly quadrupled the following year, as it popped up in states from Louisiana to North Dakota to Washington.

not sure, I was curious if acetyl fentanyl had a "cool" street name like flakka?

Just read this. Maybe heroin legalization is coming? lol

Here's the official DEA notice.

I'm curious why it took illicit drug manufacturers (and the gov't) so long to discover acetyl-fentanyl? The "China White" of the early-80s was just a different batch of fentanyl analogs (mainly alpha-methyl fentanyl), so why was acetyl fentanyl never even synthesized until recently?

Acetyl Fentanyl, Up To 15 Times More Powerful Than Heroin, Is Being Mixed With It..

Medical Daily

Doctors worrying about increasing rates of overdoses from heroin and painkillers, may actually be dealing with a drug known as acetyl fentanyl, which can be five to 15 times stronger than heroin.

In an article published in Annals of Emergency Medicine, Dr. John Stogner of the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, said that doctors could expect “an upswing in what on the surface appear to be heroin overdoses.” However, these cases may actually be acetyl fentanyl, a deadly, semi-legal designer drug that has a chemical makeup akin to the opioid painkiller fentanyl. The drug has no recognized medical use. Stogner wrote.

“What’s frightening about this emerging street drug is that users themselves may not be aware that they are ingesting it,” Stogner said in a press release. “A patient may report heroin use and have symptoms consistent with heroin overdose, but an emergency physician may find that the standard dose of antidote (naloxone) doesn’t work. Larger or additional doses are necessary when acetyl fentanyl is responsible. It’s never good to lose time between overdose and treatment.”

In February, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services declared a health advisory after three people died from injecting acetyl fentanyl. Going back to last October, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had to announce a warning about the drug after 14 people died in Rhode Island. Last June, 50 overdoses were recorded in Pennsylvania, along with five non-fatal overdoses.

Like many other designer drugs, especially synthetic weed, the drug gets a pass legally because it contains fentanyl. Manufacturers only have to label it as “not for human consumption” to keep its analog, containing acetyl, legal.

“Clever and well-informed drug distribution networks will likely take advantage of the legal loophole and profit by replacing or cutting a highly-regulated drug with this less regulated one,” Stogner said. “One of the many downsides of illegal drugs is you just can’t trust your drug dealer. The trend of adulterants being worked into street drugs to make them more potent is dangerous.”

Indeed, this trend has been seen in the past with cocaine, and most recently, with ecstasy, which is frequently mixed with bath salts, jewelry cleaner, or other synthetic cathinones.

This is old news. I see posts in NASADD where people post about how most dope in their city is mixed with fent, and people have been doing this since the 1970s. Be careful people.

I'd like to get some idea of how widespread this is.

(mixing fent with dope, or just selling 'fent-anolog' as dope)

I'd imagine the mixing has increased with acetyl fentanyl, since it's fairly available, but I imagine it also increased when the rise of DNM's saw a huge increase in illicit fentanyl availability. To what degree, I have no idea.

I doubt selling fentanyl or acetyl-fent by themselves as heroin would work very well, since they both have significantly shorter durations and fentanyl, at least, is much less euphoric than heroin. I mean it's better than a kick in the nose, but nobody would mistake one for the other.

DAMNIT! I never got to try it, outta all the fent's wasnt this the safest considering it was measured in the MG Range??? What about Butrl-Fent, and isn't there another one?? Just wondering, I guese I could find some acutal fent if I wanted some if I looked around....so wierd where I'm at Lortab(Lots everyone always has that), Percocet, Roxis, Time-Release Oxy, & Fent Patches, Morphine. Something else pops up every now again, seems like there would be heroin here since people love there pain meds, (small town, MS). But I can get most of that in a half a mile distance then there is a Meth house. The cops leave everyone alone unless there looking for warrants or stuff. BUT ANYWAY, is Burtly-fent still legal? Acetyl was the last I expected because it isn't measured in micrograms....

This is good in a sense as maybe fewer people will end up dead because perhaps it will get harder to obtain and will stop being a cutting agent. Also maybe someone who was "destined" to end up with a 10g sample he would go through in a few months and end up the words most opiate addicted person now has the future of curing cancer, who knows.

Or its just another oppressive law that go against personal responsibility, maybe some people cant be trusted with themselves? Either way it doesn't effect me as I never had any desire to do fent seemed kind of boring unless I needed a comedown aid.

Go to NASADD and do a search for fent. It comes up in discussions about dope in various cities/regions of the United States.

was referring to the main part of the thread...Schedule I status.
