FLINT, MI -- Flint Police believe a lethal concoction of fentanyl and heroin is circulating the streets of Flint.

A news release says police believe four people in Flint have already died from using the heroin with added fentanyl. Although they are still awaiting toxicology reports from the individuals to confirm the connection, the Police Department considers the concoction a public health concern.

Fentanyl is a fast-acting narcotic pain reliever used to treat moderate to severe pain, the U.S. National Library of Medicine says.

Anyone with information on the lethal drug mixture is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

Yikes what's this now over 50 people?

Such a fucked up world we are in.

Hope this atleast opens some eyes on the fact drugs need regulation.

Doubt it tho as this has happened before.

FLINT, MI -- Investigators have confirmed that the power prescription painkiller, fentanyl, is present in the heroin supply in Genesee and some surrounding counties flowing a bust by task force agents.

Detective Lt. Pat Richard, head of the Flint Area Narcotics Group, said Thursday, Feb. 20, that his agents seized roughly 25 grams of fentanyl-laced heroin during a recent drug bust.

Richard declined to comment on the specifics of the bust due to an ongoing investigation with federal authorities, but he said one person has been taken into custody. No charges have yet been filed.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is typically administered to people with chronic pain, including end-stage cancer patients. It is more powerful than morphine and can cause death by inhibiting breathing.

Richard said it is unknown how much fentanyl-laced heroin has made it into the Genesee County heroin supply, but the 25 grams seized during the FANG bust is enough to produce roughly 250 single doses.

Flint police announced earlier this month that they believed four people have already died from using the tainted heroin. Police officials said they are still awaiting toxicology reports to confirm those suspicions.

However, the Michigan State Police crime lab in Bridgeport confirmed this week that heroin seized in a Flint case separate from the deaths also tested positive for fentanyl.

Fentanyl-tainted heroin has also been discovered in Lapeer and Sanilac counties, according to the crime lab.

Richard said that cutting heroin with fentanyl can produce a more potent high for drug users but said he is concerned that some users may not be aware that the drug they are using is tainted.

"That's the problem with these illegal drugs," Richard said. "None of it is regulated. You never know what you're going to get."

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said heroin prosecutions in his office are on the rise and that his prosecutors will not allow suspects with heroin-related charges to plead to a lesser crime.

"We do not negotiate pleas on heroin," Leyton said. "If you're charged with a heroin crime you're going to plead to that charge or you're going to go to trial."

In 2010, the Flint Area Narcotics Group seized 303 grams of heroin. That number more than doubled in 2013, when it confiscated about 763 grams.
