As a rather avid smoker of the lovely Mary Jane it should be assumed the I'm all for the legalization of marijuana. I know all the arguments: Legalizing weed takes money out of the hands of gang members, we fear them the most so in the better interest of society taking money out of the hands of druglords, reducing cashflow for harder drugs, reducing cashflows for weapons, is in societies favor. The billions of dollars fed into a black market could be fed into public healthcare, and have a positive impact on society instead of the blatantly negative one it does now.
The devastating effects of alcohol and cigarettes on society far outweighs those of weed. Your doctor has never said to go on a drinking binge after cancer treatment. He's never going to say smoke a couple packs of cigarettes a day for its potential health benefits. People don't often get stoned and beat their wives. Don't get too high, blackout, and end up pregnant. Weed doesn't tear apart your liver, wreck your family (arguably), kill your braincells, make you violent and every other thing our "Legal" vices do.
The billions of dollars of public money spent on prisons to house criminals related to weed could be spent on public works, on helping the disenfranchised and making a positive change. Government officials have blatantly admitted to having had smoked, or currently do smoke weed yet they are never incarcerated. The facts just keep adding up.
But I'm not really sure if weed should be legalized.
WHAT?!?! What's this you say?! This shitty pro-drug pro-freedom sleazy motherfucker of a writer might not want weed legal!?!? How can this be??!?!?!
If there was a vote, sure I'd probably vote for it just because of the aforementioned reasons, plus I would be entirely hypocritical in my actions. But I just had some thoughts i needlessly wanted to share with my 4 avid blog readers.
Alot of people shouldn't smoke weed.
I said it... it changes people, it changes how they act, interact, and react with the world. Some people I approve of them being stoned, 24/7, infact there's a select few in my life I would buy weed for just to never have to see them sober.
However, I don't wanna see that many people stoned.
I'd argue for myself that I'm not a better person when I'm stoned. I may be enjoying myself slightly more, but eating awkwardly large quantities of food (funny aside, my friend actually ate until she threw up while she was baked the other day... I don't know if I've laughed so hard in quite some time). Plus my cognitive capabilities drop off by a good 20%, like probably a good 25 IQ points just drop out of my head for a good 3 hours. I can't hold conversations as well, I get moderately paranoid, can't really focus on stuff, get really introspective etc.
There's been a half dozen times when I was really getting along with a girl, more than likely was gonna get a solid makeout session, if not a coital interaction, and then smoked a joint and messed everything up. Couldn't figure out what I was doing, misread every signal, shit just got awkward.
With a legalization of weed, it would mean a large hike in the number of people over the legal age now buying and smoking weed. If this was the case it seems to sociological impact of this could be anywhere from slightly negative to disastrous. Now maybe there would be a few less barfights, and I'd probably buy into a mcdonalds franchise ASAP, but beyond that the large scale cons of this could be pretty bad. A bunch of unpoliceable bad drivers (i know people say they drive waaaayyyy more careful... but I've also seen how you park when stoned), potentially disasterous consequences on hooking up at the bar (maybe that's just my problem, but I'm sure I'm not the only one). Great conversations turning into duuuude, man shits like so crazy, like lets all go back to the days of not having money and making our own clothes. Etc. I'm sure massive innovators in the realms of sciences, technology, business, wouldn't coin marijuana as the driving force in their lives. You wouldn't go to a business meeting, smoke a joint, and let the conversation flow, like you could with a few glasses of scotch. I can appreciate its ability to help people relax, and chill out, and whatever other good comes of it. But there's some people I can't hang out with when they're stoned, or others when I'm stoned. Lets be honest too, we wouldn't coin stoners as the most productive lot in society. I know some high functioning stoners (no pun intended) but know far more exceptionally low functioning ones.
I'm not saying we shouldn't legalize it.. I just don't like some people sober, and having them stoned wouldn't make that better. I don't think there would be a widespread improvement in the lives of the average person if marijuana was legalized. It may not have widespread great effects, but I just don't see that many positive benefits in a social sense attributed to ganja. I'd legalize it for the right reasons, but I just don't foresee a distinct betterment on people's lives.
I also think many people who smoke weed, are cool, and if all those people who were held back by laws and conventions started smoking weed... well it wouldn't be cool. Plus all your deuchebag straight edge friends would be hanging around your house wanting to use your bongs and other cool smoking stuff. Plus not a single one of those fuckers will know how to roll a proper joint and guess who's gonna be stuck on a constant rolling duty for the next decade?
