Sorry if I'm being redundant - I DID UTFSE! Did not get an answer to my questions, though, which are:

1) What are these things, botanically? I have some knowledge of plants/plant alkaloids, terpenes, whatever...it'd be nice to have a latin name to attach.

2) Are any of these products worthwhile? Back in the day when I started smoking (ca. 1975), legal "herbal high" mixtures sold in headshops were useless. You might as well smoke the fucking bag it came in. But, I went into a store the other day that displayed a wide variety of such products. Someone must be buying them.

3) Any undisclosed hazards? I heard a horrible story a few years ago about a lady who used a "100% natural herbal diet aid" and wound up needing a liver transplant.

Again, forgive me if there's a big thread about this somewhere - just refer me to it, and delete this, if you like, moderator.

Thanks in advance, cheers!

There are tons of legal herbal highs. The problem is pretty much anything that is specifically marketed as a legal high is probably A: crap to begin with and B: probably not good for you at all. All the best 'legal herbals' are marketed as "Not for human consumption". Do your research and sniff out the herbs you're looking for in their raw form, and use them accordingly. Don't ever buy something packaged as a 'smoking blend' or 'herbal X' or 'legal weed' or anything like that. That are ALL absolute crap. The fact of the matter is that nearly anything that is legal to possess and actually worth using is probably illegal to consume. Poppy pods are a great example of this. You can buy them and grow them no problemo, the old lady down the street probably has a garden full of them, but as soon as you chop them up for consumption or harvest the opium inside, you just violated federal law. :(

Some herbs worth looking into are kratom, kava, kanna, blue lotus, yerba mate, ma huang, maybe a couple others. Almost all of these are sold as "Not for human consumption" so you simply have to know where to look and what to look for. I can't stress enough that if someone sells you something that is specifically marketed as a 'legal high' is going to be complete bull shit OR bad for you.

i don't know if you have tried kava but as far as legal herbal highs go it's the best but when i take the pills i have to take at least 30 so you might want to buy some ground root and make your own tea it can be just as relaxing as benzos except with more muscle relaxing effects

1) They are weak/inactive herbs laced with synthetic cannabinoids(JWHs, ect)
2)Some suck balls, some are very strong, most should get you stoned.
3)They are mostly unstudied, and could have side effects we don't know about. If you smoke too much it can be unpleasant, with lots of anxiety/racing heart. Probably not dangerous, but you never know. Start SMALL and slow, they can be very strong, and can take like 15mins to peak.

Ditto the others; a friend of mine is an ER nurse and has had some people come in w/ serious ODs from synthetic cannibis/"incense" products...liver failure, etc. Just be cautious everyone using those...since we don't really know what the long term effects (hell, even short term) are, for me it's not worth it.

Thanks very much. This pretty much confirms what I thought.

I know yerba mate (caffeine? similar cmpds; not bad stuff) and ma huang (ephedra; ephedrine; no thanks; might make a good starting material for you know what)

Love to try out kratom. Is it still legally available in the US?

I haven't tried any of these except for Kratom (for the first time last week). As an opiate lover, I can tell you the high is very much an opiate type high. The stuff makes me itch and nod. It is incredible and even mor e impressive since its LEGAL!! If you haven't tried it, go fuckin get some!!!

I've tried a few of them on the advice of people at the head shop... I'd ask what they recommend and hope that they're competent. From what I've been told by them, K2 is not the best and is overpriced and they have other ones that are cheaper and better.

From what I understand, they take random herbs and spray them with synthetic cannabinoids. As far as health effects go... the jury is out. Since they are all labeled 'not for human consumption', no one seems to be caring/studying it.

The one thing I noticed... and this just might be me... but I found that my tolerance grew rather quickly to it.

yeah kratom can be great, especially since it is legal.. but don't overdo it or you will get addicted to it just like opiates (though w/d is not as bad, hence why it's used by some as a step down from opiates during tapering to get off them)

if you're looking for a replacement to MJ and want something to smoke than i suggest Blue Lotus and Wild or Klip Dagga.. that's what i smoke and i actually rather enjoy it, and love that it's all herbal and legal! lol. I actually grow my own wild dagga.

Valerian root is also a good one. High dosages lead to a nice, euphoric, and dreamy experience. Some benzodiazpine site binding I believe.
There are several brand name herbal drinks that are out that may provide the experience you seek. The Marley Mellow Mood drink has valerian, hops, melatonin, chamomile, and a few other ingredients. Two cans had be pretty lazy and "life is pretty cool." mood. "Sippin' Syrup" is another good one. There's 5-HTP, St. John's Wort, Kava, and more. A bit more of a "high" than the Mellow Mood.

And then theres always salvia, but I don't think salvia counts as a "high". Unless you enjoy Kappa-Opiod-Receptor induced dysphoria, dissociation, and insanity a "high".

By the way, any "herbal" highs that you can buy at a headshop are either mixes of tea leaves, damiana, parsley, and other useless herbs, or herbs laced with synthetic cannabinoids or god knows what.
