THE lecturer who tried to kill himself after a schoolgirl died at a drugs party in his home was yesterday charged with possession of illegal substances.

Police found ecstasy, LSD, ketamine and psychedelic drug 5-MeO-DIPT in 61-year-old Brian Dodgeon’s house after Isobel Jones-Reilly, 15, suffered a cardiac arrest in April.

University of London lecturer Mr Dodgeon, who has been suspended from his job teaching about health inequalities, broke his legs when he leapt off a bridge days later.

An inquest opened and adjourned in May heard his daughter took the drugs out of a cabinet at the unsupervised party.

What a sad story.
He didn't give the drugs to children, but his daughter, who was around 15, I assume, stole them from his hiding place and gave them to her friends, one of whom died.
While he had a responsibility to keep the drugs safely away from children, I was 16 when I found my father's stash (of weed), though it was locked in his desk. So I can relate to this story.
The father tried to kill himself. I feel that it was not really his responsibility, so this was ridiculous.
And now he is being charged.
All so sad.

Agreed. If we actually taught children what drugs really do and how they effect you this shit wouldn't happen as much.. I dunno if it was just me but everytime I've come across a new "substance" I always do extensive research on it before I ingest anything that will alter my mind.

Wow what a sad story I feel sorry for his daughter her friend died and her dad tried to kill himself because of her actions. And honesty it could of happened to most of us I stole meds from my parents and gave them to friends. Just a tragic circumstance

Definitely in the minority. The vast majority of people know very little about the drugs they take, other than what they feel like and how much they cost.

Hell, many don't even know what the effects will be, and nor do they seem to care as long as they get "fucked up". People such as this do far more damage to the perception of drugs than the actual substances themselves.

I feel so sorry for this guy, basically he had hidden his drugs well in his house, his daughter and a load of people had a party, went looking for drugs which they knew he took and found his stash and died.

He tried to kill himself as he cant handle whats going on and now hes been charged with drug possesion.

Wow what a sad story I feel sorry for his daughter

Whilst I know I should, I really don't. She broke into his personal items and in turn, fucked up not one, not two, but three peoples lives. not counting all the family members who were also effected. Anybody who eats random powders they find in dads cabinet is a fucking MORON. I Feel for the dad, nobody else.

Wait a second, I know the rest of those are drugs but WHAT IS ECSTASY!!?!!?! that doesn't sound like a drug name to me, that sounds like some kind of street slang that media outlets use when they don't want to confuse the oh-so-bright public with anything too hard for them to pronounce. The use of the word ecstasy by the media shows just how uneducated the general public is...in general. but at least they're god fearing and put their trash out every thursday, that's what really matters most!

What? Ecstasy is MDMA. I call MDMA Ecstasy, so do lots of people. No drug is known by its systematic name. "Ketamine" is also a trivial name, you're not getting your knickers in a twist over that. People aren't stupid because they're ignorant about drugs, that's a silly thing to say.

I'm with you. I don't feel sorry for the kids at all. At 15 years old, I did some dumb shit, but I always was aware of the fact that what I was doing was wrong and could get me in a lot of trouble or hurt. However I cannot comprehend the mind state that a person must be in to be handed some random pill/powder, not knowing what it is or what it does, and consuming it.

I simply cannot comprehend this, and I do not feel sorry for the person who thinks at any point this a good idea. Yeah, they were kids, but FIFTEEN YEARS OLD. At that age you are FAR old enough to know the difference between something smart, something dumb, and something potentially fatal.

Fucking hell, you lot are hard-hearted, a little girl is dead and you're effectively saying that she deserved it for being stupid?

For the media, I think the nomenclature here is a special case. Think of the difference in meaning between "Scientists Test Ecstasy on Veterans" and "Oregon Teen Dies of Ecstasy Overdose". The first refers to the chemical MDMA, the second pills containing unknown chemicals.

Do the media even know which is the case? Unless the pills have been analysed or a toxicology report made available to them, they'll be going on a police report, which probably isn't more specific than "Ecstasy", no? Plus, the majority of their readers wouldn't know what MDMA is.

I don't feel sorry for the guy. Anyone with teenagers know that the second you turn your back they will be up in your shit trying to see what they can steal. And when you let your teen have unsupervised parties, as this man did, expect the worst.

And I know that parents that use/abuse drugs always think that they are doing a great job parenting but they *aren't.*

If your house is where all the kids want to hang out because you are "cool," it means that you will tolerate behavior that other parents won't. Trust me when I say that your children will pick up the tab for your permissiveness in some way, shape or form.

If this post stings a little, this might be *you.*

You don't feel sorry for him? The man has the death of a child on his hands, is suicidal with guilt, is likely to lose both his job and his freedom, and you don't have a shred of compassion?

in reality if everyone had been educated about the true danger of these drugs (that is, they are very sensitive dose-wise and for people with pre-existing problems should never be taken) then this never would have happened.

Um, WHAT? We have been educated about the danger of unprotected sex, yet we still do it. We have been educated that we could stop the tragedy of pet overpopulation if we all got our animals fixed, yet many don't bother. People have been educated about what will happen if they do not take their insulin but they still do what they please. Education is only part of the battle. I was told from day one that drugs were bad news and would only lead to heartache. They were right, but I carried on anyway. People don't care, they just want to get high. And sometimes it leads to just exactly this. So, we get what we get.

Nope.

I think that's a very cold view, I hope that if you ever make a mistake you are not judged so harshly.

If you have something to add, please use the edit button rather than double-posting.

If I ever leave my stash where kids can get their hands on 'em, I would not expect a lot of sympathy. I would expect judgement, harsh.

i'd bet he'd do anything to go back now...this is sad.
it's not just kids this can happen to, a mate of mine had a flat party last year, had a 200mg baggie of 2ci in the drawer next to his bed. two lads went into his room and started looking through his stuff, they found the bag and split it into two lines assuming it was coke. lucky for them a girl had seen them go in so she went to get my mate in case they were nicking anything and they got stopped before they could snort it.

shit like this article does happen, only you should be able to access your chems so keep them locked up! x
