Leading world politicians urge 'paradigm shift' on drugs policy

(sarcasm.) Hey let's invest billions upon billions of dollars into sending people that smoke pot to rehabilitation! (sarcasm.) Seriously though, I'm pretty sure our economy should be the government's #1 priority right now, instead of arresting innocent (For the most part.) drug users and spending all this money on getting rid of the drugs. Like a few other people already said, the only reason the drug rates are going down is because there are a lot more prescription drugs out now than there were back in the 70's.

just face it guys, somehow, someway, the US gov't is banking off the illegal drug trade.. They sell it to us then they make laws that make it illegal so they can charge insane prices and lock up all their competition (i.e. other Drug traffickers).

Ok guys, here it is.... The War on Drugs = money, lots and lots of money...... greed can control even the the most righteous of us.

Like MGS says, the money needs to be used to kill terrorists, not imprison citizens that prefer being in a state of commercialized euphoria.

-edit: Makes me happy to see everyone cooking glass for once.

Gotta agree about the opiates. All this talk about cocaine rate, when heroin is huge everywhere. I grew up through the 70s, 80s, 90s so I saw the switch. Heroin was on it's way down when I was real young, then coke was huge, now it's an array of opiates that are the drug of choice. I don't see their statistics in there. That's cuz they wanna look like they've accomplished something..... Ha, wha a bunch of dummies

White House Rebuttal:

• Overall drug use in the United States has dropped substantially over the past thirty years. The number of Americans using illicit drugs today is roughly half the rate it was in the late 70's. (National Survey on Drug Use and Health, HHS)

Oh, is that why the percent of people under the age of 23 arrested for drug charges has increased from 20 to 30 since the '60s? (see: the other thread on here)

It's also worth noting that after cocaine was made illegal in the early 20th century, it fell out of favor and was virtually unknown, until it blew up again in the '70s. If this isn't clear evidence that prohibition has a negligible impact on consumption, I don't know what is. It's a well established fact that the popularity of certain drugs fluctuates, much like any other commodity.

Does anyone ever look at the other side of the coin? The "Drug War" isnt LOSING!!! it was instant victory the moment some asshole working for Nixon slapped it into writing. This "war" was SOOOOO brilliantly (yet disgustingly evil) dreamed up and those who keep running it are still pillaging the leftovers from the 70's. DO any yanks here know how the PRIVATE prison industry is doing in "the greatest country on earth". they are cleaning house because they have support from soooo many different groups w lobbiests. they want increased time served for pettier offenses because its a BUSINESS. When you allow companies to take over prisons, jails, whatever, they need to have cells filled in order to turn a profit.
The War on Drugs was declared Mission Accomplished before many people here were born. SO fucking deal with it u dopefiends. No more BS sessions over how to "win" a "war" that was inherently victorious simply by being passed into law.
Dont get me wrong I like drugs occasionally now (was hooked on down for years) But... ITS OVER, we lost, our children will lose even worse... Our only hope is that EVENTUALLY... maybe... when capitalism eliminates the middle class completely, as it will on a long enough timescale, social crisis' will reach a critical mass and precipitate change. it will need to be widespread and probably viciously brutal through necessity. maybe in 3030??? I wanna Devise a virus to bring dire straights to your environment...
