Laws of Motion, A Proof

Or, Why I Still Stay

I

i understand equally
desire to leave and
desire to stay

II

inertia subdued and undone
velocity as defined at departure
and escape inequal affected

only by acceleration,
a perfect slope denying
friction deflected upward
arcing off the graph.

vector is exponential
torn free of gravity.

III

what goes does not return.
or returns if it will.
or succumbed to interference,

contact with the object
in motion intercepted,
discharge insufficient for
crossfire conversation.

IV

here is home, now is situation.
moving is a temporary state.
stasis, it must be added

is rarely final, though
entropy always wins.
desire and decision

see choice as a trap.
(that likely deserves
explanation)

V

once asked enough
this was inscribed,
a permanent answer

easier to recall
than one lie
or worse many.

VI

when i think of wasted words i wonder
what i wanted to say, why i started to speak
or accepted the conversation.

VII

when leaving, remember
now everything changes.

VIII

out of touch is a complement
of this condition:
my living is a compromise.

IX

everything in motion
must slow to a stop
but change is certainly

sudden.

Change is certainly sudden... or is it just that we suddenly realised that we have changed?

I like the direction you have take here, it is so deliberately vague that i am sure most people can take from it some sense of meaning. For me, i can relate to the feeling of being trapped if you stay, and trapped if you go. Living in a milieu not your own is never easy...

Thank you Cosmic Mist, I was struggling to get out what I wanted to say about this piece! Spinkle you never cease to amaze. Each word in this is so deliberately placed, with specific actions, but yet the whole is vague. And this is where I know the feeling, knowing small details of what and how, but not being able to understand deal with or manage the change in the reader.

(or perhaps just my take on it ;))

Probably one of the most intricate pieces I have read in a while.

thanks for the comments =) this was a difficult piece to write, as i was writing from a specific mindset with a very intentional point...but giving too much explicit information would stifle the tone i was/am going for and limit the potential reads of the piece. in short, the piece is an attempt to answer the question implied by the alternate title. i think it may need slight revision, but i'm leaving it alone for a little while before i bring out a red pen.

i'm just thrilled i broke through six months of writer's block.

wow! i loved the way the scientific terms conveyed an almost clinical analysis of the situation, yet the narrative of the poem betrays how emotionally attached to the situation you are/were.

the flow is fantastic...the words are paced and placed so well.

i really liked it :)

agree that you are and have always been an amazing writter.. it is very relatable to me and made me want to keep reading
