A 17-year-old public schoolboy has died after inhaling laughing gas at a party.

Joseph Benett suffered a cardiac arrest after taking the popular party drug with friends on August 31 and fell into a coma.

The teenager, from Hampstead, north London, died on Thursday last week with his family at his bedside.

"He just never woke up. He had such terrible brain damage and his fits were getting worse," his grieving sister Camille, 27, told the Ham&High newspaper.

"When he stopped breathing, my dad and I were holding his hand.

"I found it hard to leave him. As a big sister I felt a responsibility to look after my little brother."

Sixth-former Joseph, who attended University College School in Hampstead and was reported to be a promising art student, was at a friend's house in Hertfordshire when he collapsed.

The sale of nitrous oxide for recreational use is against the law, but the gas is becoming increasingly popular on the party scene.

A number of celebrities have been pictured inhaling the drug - nicknamed hippy crack - which can starve the brain of oxygen.

Joseph's sister added: "I think having experienced how much this hurts, people should think about whether they are putting themselves in danger.

"You do need to think about what you are doing, not just for yourself, but for the sake of the people who love you."

UCS head teacher Kenneth Durham said: "It is an absolute tragedy. His friends are terribly upset. He was very talented."

An inquest into Joseph's death has been opened and adjourned at Hertfordshire Coroner's Office.

And now we know why in anesthetia people blend N2O with oxygen/air!

It doesn't explicitly say but I bet this guy was huffing nos out of a gas cylingder through a mask. Generally people don't starve their brain of oxygen to the point of death with whip-its.

yeah for real this kid probably had a mask on or was doing it the dumb ass way with a plastic bag over his head or something dumb like that... no one dies from just doing a balloon.

I have seen a lot of youtube videos where people will take a balloon full of nitrous and hyperventilate it for a minute or two, usually they end up blue in the face and sometimes fall down. This is ridiculous! I have been safely using nitrous for 7-8 years (sparingly of course) and I never need to hyperventilate or hold the nitrous in for extended periods of time.
When breathing nitrous I make sure to fill my lungs half way with air before taking the nitrous and repeat for every breath of nitrous I take, while take short breathing breaks in between. I still completely lose myself in anaesthetic bliss if I am taking 24-32g of nitrous in a short succession. Those youtube videos scare me.

this is why i posted this for reply's like this one as its becoming more n more popular here in the uk , personally i do not get it, but if it helps stop deaths like this one please post your tips :)

You'd have to huff on a balloon for like 4-5 minutes for this to happen, so yeah I think he had a cannister and a mask or something.

my impression is that this guy must have been trying REALLY hard to end up dying from nitrous.

Sometimes computer duster or cooling sprays are called laughing gas too. Difluoroethane and to a lesser extent ethyl chloride can cause heart problems. Maybe it wasn't N2O?

I've never heard anyone refer to anything but nittrous as laughing gas. {retty sure if the kid had killed himself with Dust-Off that would be the centerpiece of the story...

You'd be surprised. Many are under the mistaken impression that computer duster is just compressed N2O. Also ethyl chloride is sometimes called laughing gas. There's some videos on Youtube of people huffing ethyl chloride and they call it laughing gas.

The media lies and sometimes does misleading stories, especially about drugs. The cardiovascular effects of halocarbons and some hydrocarbons seems more constant with heart problems, because to varying degrees they sensitize the heart to adrenaline. N2O advantage is it doesn't do this. Some aren't too bad, others simply getting spooked(like a parent walking in on you huffing) is enough to cause heart problems from the sensitization.
