I've recently taken an interest in the tincture of opium, a.k.a. laudanum. As this stuff is pretty easy to make at home, I'm surprised that it isn't popular. So, before I start sowing poppy seeds, a few questions:

1. Is there a specific reason why laudanum is so unpopular? Is it (for instance) a dangerous substance to play with or has it just simply been forgotten or replaced?
2. How many poppy plants would one need to produce an adequate supply that will lasts a while?
3. Does anyone have experience with laudanum? How does it compare to other opioids?

Thusfar I've made my own cannabis tincture (not that spectacular), grown my own mushies and extracted my own DMT. This would be a nice little project to keep me busy the coming year. If I'll get satisfying answers to the questions above I'll try to keep everyone posted on the process.

I think it's not used much today as its extremely easy to become dependant on, and is among one of the very easy to overdose type opiates. As it contains all alkaloids of the opium plant you're effectively messing with every single narcotic/opiate in the book at once. Hence it is extremely easy to get addicted to, or overdose on. You need to be extremely careful dosing the stuff if its homemade as you don't know the exact potency of what you've created. As its a tincture of course it contains high concentrations of ethanol - which again attribute to its deadly nature.

I don't have any experience with the substance nor do I ever plan on doing so either. It seems more scary than heroin or any other opiate based preparations in my opinion. Of course it may have the potential to be extremely euphoric, I don't think it outweighs the imminent dangers of the tincture itself. I would stick to something else if I were you to be honest.

Yeah, I figured that it might be seriously addictive. That's why I want to produce it myself. Papaver plants can only be planted and harvested once a year (as far as I know), so everything I yield will be my total supply. When it's gone, it's gone. Out of all the people I know I'm the only one interested in opioids/opiates, so I won't be able to get more on the short term. Kind of like a build-in security plan.

As far as the overdosing goes I had an idea as well. I'm planning on weighing the plain solvent first. When the tincture is done I discard all plant materials. This will leave a certain amount of liquid (the tincture). If I weigh this again, I should be able to determine how much opium is in the tincture by subtracting the initial weight from the new weight (gr/L for instance). Or am I thinking too simple? Let me make clear that I do not plan on getting high/drunk/whatever on the solvent. I don't want to make opium vodka or anything, just something that'll give me a good buzz when I add a few drops to a soft drink. I'll probably evaporate a big portion of the solvent when the tincture is ready.

I'm sorry, my English isn't what it used to be. But I think I've made myself clear on this one ;)

I mean its just opium and alcohol from my understanding. Opium is addictive and very abusable/euphoric and obviously doesn't cure any diseases, hence it not being used as a medicine. And combining opiates with alcohol is risky because of overdose.

But nothing about it is particularly dangerous other than that. It's just outdated, these days kids pop oxys and drink beer instead lol

I was under the impression that only a few drops were needed. I remember Johnny Depp putting two drops (maybe a few more) on his sugar cube when he was preparing a glass of absinth in 'From Hell' :P

im no expert on laudanum, but i wouldnt believe anything you see in a movie. hollywood is notorius for getting its drug facts wrong.

I grew poppy plants before, by accident. I scattered the seeds from my poppy seed tea into my backyard, which was an incredibly fertile valley with a river going through it. That's probably why they grew at all, as it was in the extreme north, far past the tree line. I was shocked, to say the least, as poppies are a Mediterranean flower, they shouldn't have grown so easily where I was.

But, not to look a gift horse in the mouth, I harvested the plants when they were ripe. I had at most maybe ~70 flowers. Still, even with that much, when I actually made the opium, I got an extremely tiny amount, barely enough for a few uses.

Now, maybe they just didn't grow perfectly, being outside their climate and all. But I'm fairly sure you need to grow A LOT of flowers to get much opium from the harvest.

Yes, Papaver somniferum are annuals & will flower, seed and die in one season. But if you stagger the sowing, a row a week say, then you can extend the period you have usable pods for. IME, slitting the pods, scraping off the opium and trying to smoke it has always been a let down (tastes wonderful though! chase a blob on some foil...) and by far and away the best results are from making a "green slushie". Ripe pods (start small, 2 pods say and titrate upwards) into a blender , warm (not hot!) water and some vit c, blend 'till smooth.
Now the fun bit... this stuff has a texture all it's own and even when you know the effects it's difficult to get down. The taste too is horrible.. But!
The buzz from fresh pods is stunning. All those alkaloids working in harmony... heaven! Better than dried pod tea too. You might want an antihistamine handy for the itchies!

You need to harvest opium for real laudanum and it's hard work, and if harvested I would still prefer to eat or smoke the product.

Laudanum straight from poppy plants, never tried it. But if you do want to try you can dose by simply dividing the liquid by volume so that it responds to a certain mass of poppy pods and suppose that all the alkaloids are in the solution (they aren't but its better be on the safe side).

once you've created this be sure to dose very small and work your way up.

i'm sure its extremely easy to overdose on the stuff, given that you don't know the potency of it, and the fact you have pure ethanol mixed into the equation too. take it easy, but i'm sure the stuff will give a fucking fantastic high.

OP, your questions have been answered and HR advice about the potency of Laudanum has been given. I think this thread, while not breaking any BDD Guidelines, is on the verge of synth discussion, which isn't allowed on BL.

All that had to be said has been said, so I'm going to close the thread. Feel free to PM me with any questions.
