Latin leaders question move to legalize marijuana

The leaders of several Latin American nations on the front lines of the battle against drugs said Tuesday that a California ballot measure to legalize marijuana would send a contradictory message from the United States.

The Nov. 2 election in California was a key topic as Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos hosted the presidents of Mexico and three other countries at a one-day summit.

Santos said that if Californians approve Proposition 19, it would require reviewing the principles that have long underpinned efforts to combat drugs in Latin America with support from Washington.

"How can I tell a farmer in my country that if he grows marijuana, I'll put him in jail, when in the richest state of the United States it's legal to produce, traffic and consume the same product?" Santos said in an interview broadcast Sunday by the Colombian radio station Caracol.

A final statement from the summit's participants urged drug-consuming nations to form "consistent and congruent" anti-drug policies.

Consistent drug policies? It'd be up to them to change their drug policies, which haven't worked and have caused an outrageous amount of deaths.

I have a feeling there are ulterior motives -perhaps related to the hundreds of millions they're getting to fight drugs, and the possibility of receiving less.

A yes on Prop 19 means Latin america will legalise too.. How is that is a bad thing? Time for the poor farmers to get some real value for their crops. Time for the oppression to end.

I was under the impression that in Mexico ,and Columbia that small amounts of grugs are legal,or at least "not enforced" law wise like amsterdam in a way..

Meh, and then all the former Latin leaders say we need to end the war on drugs. And I'm surprised this is actually getting international attention, I'd have expected the feds to put out a memo that they are gonna overturn it anyways, so chill out and toke up.

those latin american countries just want to keep making profits from drug trafficking to the US. fuck this shit

They'll be sad because they will no longer be getting hand outs to "fight" the drug war.

^^ Yeah no shit. "Oh how can I tell someone in my country not to grow marijuana when the "richest" state in the US grows, consumes and manufactures it legally?"

first of all that statement is retarded, 2nd wtf is he talking about the richest state in the US being California?!? lol they have like a $46 billion dollar deficit.
its like omg for real? They don't do shit to fight drugs in those countries, they just get hand outs (like nuke said) from our government to "fight" it... its so ridiculous and this just proves the theory that our gov't and other governments around the world are heavily involved in the drug trade.. I guarantee you that the US gov't is directly involved with bringing schedule I narcotics into this country.
