LatAm losing fear of legalizing drugs: Ecuador president
Aug 20th 2014

Guatemala City (AFP) - Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa said Tuesday that Latin America is "losing fear" of legalizing drugs after decades of fighting traffickers with ample US prodding but limited success.

The region's governments have opened talks toward developing a shared stance on legalization, and the topic is no longer off-limits, the leftist leader told a forum on economic development in Guatemala City.

"There's not a common position in Latin America, (but) that's under discussion now. People are losing that fear, getting over their taboos," he told a press conference.

Correa, an economist by training, called for an open debate on which drugs can be legalized and what the health impact would be, with the goal of reducing the violence the war on drugs has unleashed in the region.

He said Latin American leaders should not be stigmatized for discussing legalization.

"American senators have the right to present ideas, for example on legalizing drugs, but if a South American president dares to do it, he's a drug trafficker," Correa argued.

Uncle Sam has habitually behaved like his opinions should never be questioned or contested by the governments of other nations.

However, if another governing body were to act in this manner towards him, it may lead to all manner of sanctions, possible infiltration, and even war in the very worst case scenario.

Be that as it may - I don't believe that the US has ever been as vulnerable as it is at present regarding diplomatic relations with her allies. And I believe that this is due in part to revelations by whistleblowers, the 2008 stock market crash, the extremely fucked up situation south of the border, and especially because of the contradictory drug policies with respect to marijuana.

Personally, I don't believe that Obama would give a shit about Latin America deciding to completely reform their drug laws - I'm talking decriminalization and strict legalization/regulation. In fact, I believe that perhaps in secret he would be relieved, as it would most likely aid in eventually resolving the refugee crisis.

GOP lackeys will probably attempt to make a scene by suing him for a third or fourth time, and Fox News will definitely complain, but fuck 'em. Despite the fact that the US could turn any nation into a glass parking lot, they shouldn't be permitted free reign to all but dictate controversial foreign policies. They wouldn't like it if someone else did it to them. And chances are that someone else will do it to America if the country or government in question were on the receiving end previously (assuming they can get away with it).
