After having numerous jobs over the years, I would love to start an actual career in real estate but I am seriously lacking the self confidence to deal with people effectively, to talk to people. The reason for this is unknown, apart from being out of the workforce for a little while (1 year) due to having a child and wanting to spend time with him.

I recently completed a very long screening questionnaire of 351 questions to assess attributes and personality for a real estate salesperson position.. and the head honcho of the company contacted me stating I was the top scorer, the highest he has ever seen. I did not send my CV because again, I keep thinking, why would anyone want to hire me, I have no 'qualifications' I have no idea how to talk to people anymore, etc. But after a lengthy phone conversation, he wants to see me and offer me the tools I ultimately need to have a successful career.

I now have an interview and possibly the opportunity of a lifetime.
But I am freaking out hardcore here because of this lack of confidence in myself and my abilities.

I would love any ideas on how to improve self confidence and eliminate self doubt so that I can successfully pursue the career of my dreams.

Thanking all in advance!

Just remember, it's all in your head. If the big man told you that you scored so high, that should boost your confidence right there %)

I don't really know what else to tell you other than sometimes you have to fake confidence in order to get ahead. You prolly already know that Real Estate can be a tough career especially in this economy. But if that's really what you want to do then go for it. Commission sales is one of the only jobs out there that has some sort of job security right now because the company only pays you when you are productive. But it ain't easy. I'm in a 100% commission job right now and am struggling a little bit, but it beats working the shitty jobs I've been working up till now (no offense to those working a shitty job).

Then again, I'm unfamiliar with RE. Do you get any sort of base salary or draw?

I also find it difficult to feel and appear confident at work and I worry about whether or not I am good at my job. However I've noticed that there are plenty of mediocre/completely useless people who have great jobs and they certainly don't deserve them any more than I deserve my job, if that makes any sense. In fact they don't even care whether or not they are any good which is even worse. I'm sure you will notice the same thing after a while in the job..

The fact that you aren't arrogant, smug and going around acting like god's gift to real estate already means your customers will have a better experience than some people do when they are trying to buy or sell a house!

Good luck with the interview- go for it because if you don't get the job, someone else will and they probably won't deserve it any more than you do!

If there is one thing I can contribute to this post it is the fact that almost everyone's self esteem / confidence is much less than what it should be.

I have suffered from feeling inadequate my whole life and I finally realized that I was letting my feelings dictate my actions, in otherwords I was feeling like a terrible person and because of that I ended up ACTING like a terrible person.

Now I force my actions to dictate my feelings.

If I feel terrible, I do something that I KNOW is GREAT FOR ME, and after I do it, I feel great... this has translated to all aspects of my life in only a month since having this mindset.

I was unemployed for about 3 months and ended up in detox from a terrible opiate addiction, I started thinking this way and immediately I started working on feeling better by doing better...

Now it is 1 month after realizing this, and I have got the best job I have ever had in my life, about double what I was making a year ago, I am in great physical health, and I actually enjoy life more because I feel better about me.

Start working on your physical health first, then after it becomes a routine you will have some more confidence, not much, but more. Once you make this connection through experience rather than communication with an outside source (in other words once you truly believe this) then amazing things will happen for your confidence and thus your quality of life will improve drastically...

I am living proof
