Lack of legal stimulants

It occurred to me today that there's a real shortage of legal stimulants.

The only useable thing you've got is caffeine... Caffeine is a shit drug. After the equivalent of 2 or 3 cups of coffee it doesn't wake you up anymore, it just makes you feel anxious, jittery or wired. Moreover it stops working after a while... ever tried to stay up ages and ages on caffeine? You still get tired.

Only recently has any serious alternative been developed, mainly adrafanil and its superior cousin modafinil. (I'm not talking about meth, that'll never be legal. or at least, not while I'm around).

Yet adrafanil is still prescription.

The stimulant market is a wealth of untapped potential... society is becoming increasingly hectic... people are expected to work longer and longer hours. Some people are expected to pull huge loads for short periods of time.

Look at coffee sales -- they're HUGE. Same thing for energy drinks... people may claim that "going out for a coffee" is social, but you can't really say that about Coke, and newer (stronger) drinks like V, Red Bull etc...

Why is it that no drug companies are putting their money into stimulants? It it because of the entrenched notion that medicines must be curative only, and cannot be used where there is no well-definied medical illness? Viagra is the first drug to "escape" this closed pharmaceutical market, and I'm sure more will come.

Even if a pharmaceutical company wasn't trying to tap into the non-prescription market, surely there's a market for prescription stimulants other than the amphetamines? Why isn't this being developed? Do you think it will be any time in the near future?

Just to be argumentive ;)

I guess for many people the word stimulant is associated with danger.

I'm sure better stimulant drugs could be developed, and I understand your reasoning when questioning why caffeine is basically it for legal stims in Aus, but I think it's a lot to do with caffeine vs others being a case of "The devils you know" :|

As a CNS stimulant caffeine does have distinct advantages over many other drugs. Here's a few

  • It does not lead to self administration in animal tests
  • While stimulating the heart muscle, caffeine relaxes smooth muscle
    (bronchial)
  • It's also a diuretic
  • Tolerance is slow to develop
It would be hard to find a substitute which both fits the perceived safety margin seen with coffee, and be willingly substituted for the daily brew.

Rang et al states that in tea and coffee drinking countries, the average daily caffeine consumption is ~ 200mg for each adult

Try doing that [not] with sympathomimetic amines 8(

All good points... I just wish there were more readily available CNS-only stimulants... Adrafinil is amazing if you ask me... it works really really well :)

Last time I checked pseudoephedrine was available legally OTC at the chemist. If you use it daily the tolerance builds up very quickly in my opinion, and you can get very dehydrated, but as a stimulant it works like a charm. And, it dries out your sinuses when you have a cold. It lasts a lot longer than caffiene though.

BigTrancer :)

Tolerance = the bane of my existence.

Seriously think about it... its one of the large deterrants from continual drug use, due to escalating costs and diminishing returns.

Imagine if you could take a small but reasonable amount of meth and develop no tolerance. I know huge numbers of people who'd do that every day.

pseudoephedrine is certainly available over the counter at any pharmacy in the form of 'cold and flu' tablets. They are an effective stimulant (great for exam study!), however, take no more than 8 per day, as the tablets also contain paracetamol, which is rather toxic to your liver in bigger doses.

paracetamol toxicty can be fatal in less 48hrs depending on dose. Anyone taking too much should present to the emergency department of their nearest hospital for an infusion of L-cysteine (essentially an antedote)

Or just take nurofen cold and flu, with ibuprofen & pseudoephedrine... certainly not the best to OD on, but safer than paracetamol/APAP

Something legal that works pretty good is 30mg pseudoephedrine + 200mg caffene + half an asprin (classic ECA stack). Meth is better though =D

Of course stimulants are rife amongst truckies, who have to drive countless hours. A recent survey indicated that over 40% of truckies admitted to using speed. Thats 40% who ADMIT it. So the real figure would be closer to 80%.

American airforce crew have to sign a document which makes it mandatory that they take speed. This is so because they need to stay awake for up to 30 or 40 hours.

Hmmm this may explain why they bombed the fuck out of iraq. They got paranoid thinking they had biochemical weapons :D .

I feel your pain VelocideX:) Try working shiftwork - coming home at 22:00 hours (that's 10pm to you normal folks;) ) then trying to get to sleep (without resorting to hypnotics) in order to get adequate sleep to be up at 5:30. Usually, my sleep is broken because I don't have adequate time to wind down before I go to bed, so my mind races. I normally work at least 2 days a week on 5 hours sleep maximum (and my preferred amount is 10 hours), as do thousands of other health care workers all over the world. And we are the people responsible for other peoples lives! There would be a huge market for a safe stimulant in my industry and many others.

^^^^^^^

LOL...fuck you UH;),Iwas going to say that....technically it's illegal, but i'd be surprised if 0.5% of LE even knowwhat it is!!!Nice stuff .....fresh that is:)

Ephedra is also illegal in Australia :P.

I'll be very interested to see if adrafinil spreads further... It's currently not even registered in Australia (and so legal to import ;) ;) ). Modafinil is, but its rediculously expensive... it might become more viable when it comes off-patent. They both seem to be landmarks in the development of CNS stimulants with little addictive potential... You don't get high, you don't get buzzed, you just get back to normal.

Despite the desire of just about everyone on this board to take stimulants primarily for their euphoria, ability to dance etc, there are times when just being awake is a good thing... Not being cloudy in the head etc. Exams come to mind, as does driving home late at night. Better yet, it is still possible to fall asleep on adrafinil!

Yea... familiar with all the negative media attention stimulants such as Ephedra/Ephedrine, Gingko/Ginseng, etc... had got a couple of years ago?

I dunno, I could be wrong... but after hearing stories about idiots going out to nightclubs amd drinking 50-60 energy drinks in order to feel "speedy" and "dancy", I'm not surprised why big manafacturers are shit-scared to even contemplate looking into this area of "medicines".

^^I think more to the fact that drug companies maybe should be using that information to look for a better alternative to caffiene/gurana as a stimulant. Its certainly not healthy to be drinking 20 energy drinks in 3hrs to stay awake.

Wouldnt it be a whole lot better if you could pop one pill and feel awake, maybe 2 to give you a bit of a charge, then you can stay up and do what you need to do, or go out etc. All you need then is to add to it some kind of drug, like sorbitol in a lot of cough mixtures, which has negative effects if taken too much of. Then you've got something that can readily regulate its intake to an extent. Of course there are always the diehards who are going to want more, but they can go buy meth or work out some kind of extraction process using random household chemicals.

I'm sure a lot of people could benefit from such a drug.. take half for 4hrs, a whole for 8hrs.

(says me whos been awake since 4am *without* stimulants :\ )
stace.

Khat...Yes, I agree Urban Hoggie!

Perhaps exercise, sunshine and porn are enough to slimulate the senses.....juuuuust mucking around.....

Certainly not encouraging RC use here. But BZP is classed as a stimulant, and I'm pretty sure it's still legal here and not an analogue of banned drugs? (tell me if im wrong..)

Also All phenethylamines have a CNS stimulant nature, even the sedating ones. Low doses of 2C-D 9 (10-30mg) is considered a "smart drug" and I find 1-3mg of 2c-i is enough to produce a very in control focus, and uplifting stimulant qualities. I could run a mile.

20mg of 2C-D, is what I would call an excellent Psychedelic Pep chemical.

It is of suprisingly interesting effect. However it is illegal under the analog drug act.
