I think the PDR is mistaken. I thought it was l-amphetamine too, but the evidence suggests otherwise:
Bradley
Benzedrine(R) and dexedrine(R) in the treatment of children's behavior disorders
Pediatrics, Jan 1950, 24-37, Vol 5, No. 1
"The psychologic responses of children to benzedrine (racemic, {dl-}, amphetamine) sulfate and its dextro-rotatory isomer (d-amphetamine) known commercially as dexedrine sulfate have been the subject of several communications appearing in the literature since 1937"
Glaser PE, Thomas TC, Joyce BM, Castellanos FX, Gerhardt GA.
Differential effects of amphetamine isomers on dopamine release in the rat striatum and nucleus accumbens core.
Psychopharmacology (Berl). 2005 Mar;178(2-3):250-8.
"Although taken off the market in the early 1970s, benzedrine, the racemic mixture of amphetamine, had been used for the treatment of ADHD"
and the government is in on it too:

"Amphetamine is also a Schedule II controlled substance and is usually supplied as the sulfate salt of the d-isomer (Dexedrine®), or as the racemic mixture (Benzedrine®)."
