Fresh kratom doesn't taste that bad at all imo. I kinda like it in a way. However drinking kratom tea/liquid always tasted bad, but I like the powder.

Old/expired/low quality kratom tastes foul and is harsh on the stomach.

usually fresh anything tastes better then the shit in the can, or in this case the vacuum sealed baggy.

toss and washing kratom daily for years and years made it difficult to acquire the taste of the shit because when you take Kratom know that the shit coats your god damn tongue in pond/creek mud. so them bumps (papillae) on your tongue is layered son with Kratom. So guess what ? For the next several moments, Kratom will taste; sweet, bitter, sour, salty, cold & hot & last but not least, your handy astringent taste bud is like 'fucking gross, spit out this shitty pond water before i make your ass puke'.
If I had a nickle for how many tongue toothbrushes I had gone through over the years simply to brush away the Kratom cake action going down on my tongue I'd have atleast $5.
