Kratom for Grandma

Long story short, my grandmother has been having severe back pains for the last 15 years following a car accident and a botched operation. She currently takes 30mg oxycodone three times per day, and she says that the oxy helps a little bit, but the pain is still excruciating. She has been on this dosage for a few years now. Her doctor doesn’t seem to understand the concept of tolerance and is refusing to raise the dosage. I've been thinking that kratom might help with the pain.

I have told her about kratom, and she is willing to give it a shot. Would this be a good idea? She is 70 years old, if that matters. I’ve heard that kratom can safely be mixed with oxycodone, but I’m thinking she could try skipping an oxycodone dose and taking the kratom instead.

Would two grams of Maeng Da be a good first time dose? I have used kratom recreationally in the past, and I know that two grams is a relatively low dose, but I’m thinking it would be better to start low so she can see how the kratom will affect her. Thoughts?

In my honest opinion if your grandma gains no clinical benefit from oxycodone I doubt kratom will change that.

Find a new doctor, or perhaps ask the current one to add pregabalin to her regimen.

Yeah, I have to agree with Chromophobia here, a better option might be asking her doctor to consider adding some non-opioid drugs. If she already takes 90mg oxycodone per day I would be surprised if kratom would do much for her.

If you still want to try it anyway, I think your plan of starting with a low dose would be a good idea, because everyone is different and older people tend to be more prone to side effects so it would be good to start low and see how it affects her.

You could add Kratom to the oxycodone, but I doubt it would have much effect if any in producing additional analgesia. If the pain is truly unbearable on her dose of oxy at the moment and is doing little to help with pain relief, perhaps it's time to switch opioids and try something new, or titrate the dosage further.

If she wishes to add Kratom, I suggest you use as low a dose as possible to add with the oxy as it can be rather sedating and powerful. I have personal combined the two for euphoric effects and it worked well, but not for analgesia. Many others however don't like the mixture as they don't compliment one another in some cases.

Maybe, kratom has some alkaloids which act as snri's and nmda antagonists. So, kratom could give your grandma something she doesn't have. I'd just got buy some dxm from the grocery instead , it has the same effects really besides less opioid agonisn, and more nmda antagonism

Perhaps your grandma could try using natural things such as a ZMA supplement at night, or chelated magnesium tablets. It is a strong natural muscle relaxant, and can help prevent tolerance build up to oxy too.
