So I had read about kratom and the reports were all so conflicting. Some people loved it, others swore it did nothing. I wanted to find out for myself. I ordered 50g of crushed leaves from a vendor that claimed high potency and it arrived yesterday. The bag was a mix of powder and bits of leaf, mostly brown with bits of dark green. It smelled somewhat like very strong tea.
Preparation
I made myself some tea in a supposedly traditional fashion. 25g boiled very slowly in water, then strained. Then I boiled the leaves again in fresh water and strained that as well. Then I boiled the liquid down even further, making a small, but potent amount of tea. Doing a bit of basic math, I figured out how much I would have to take to equal close to 10g worth of kratom, poured it in a cup, mixed in a bit of honey, and took it like a shot.
Result
Within 5 minutes my tongue went numb. I took that as a good sign. My wife and I were going to the grocery store to get some food for dinner and I asked her to drive. By the time we got to the store (maybe 15 minutes later) I was already feeling it. A slight floaty sensation, a relaxed manner, some tingling in my limbs, and an overall body high. I was pushing a shopping cart through the isles with a smile on my face, not really caring about anything. But my mind was still focused and alert and I had no problem carrying on conversation.
By the time we got home, maybe 45 minutes to 1 hour after taking the tea, I was feeling wonderful. I don't have a particularly high tolerance for opioid-like substances, though I can normally hold my own; but I was very surprised at how strong the tea was. I was talkative, I felt happy, and everything felt great. By this point my nose was itching incessantly (something that happens to me with on drugs like hydrocodone), but I didn't really care.
Deviation
At this point I was feeling so good that I wanted to supplement the feeling with something else. I considered some beer, but then chose to go with a little bit of weed. I had read that some people really enjoyed weed while on kratom. In retrospect, I wish I hadn't. About 10-15 minutes after taking some hits of weed I became flushed, overly hot, and a little dizzy. For the first time in the night I had to sit down. My hunger disappeared (I was starving about an hour earlier, so I'm not sure if it was the kratom really kicking in, or the weed mixed with the kratom), and all I could do was just sit on the couch and stare vacantly at the TV.
It wasn't bad, but I honestly felt way better before the weed. Whereas before I had energy and was happy, now I was just lethargic and wanted to go to bed.
Conclusion
Kratom met and exceeded my expectations. There were multiple points during the night when I thought to myself, "Wait, this is legal and I can buy it with ease whenever I want?" After a stressful day at work, it did wonders to make me relax and not worry about the next day. Today I'm a little bit groggy; but I don't think it is due to the kratom. Next time I'm going to try it all by itself for the entire night and see how the night ends.
Overall, an amazing experience. Nothing life altering or metaphysical; but definitely a great sensation that I can't wait to try again.
