SPRINGFIELD, Ky. -- With authorities closing in to seize 2,400 marijuana plants on John Robert Boone's farm two years ago, the legendary Kentucky outlaw vanished like a puff of smoke. The prolific grower has been dodging the law ever since, his folk-hero status growing with every sale of a "Run, Johnny, Run" T-shirt and click on his Facebook fan page.

Tracking down the fugitive who resembles a tattooed Santa Claus has proven as hard as "trying to catch a ghost" for the federal authorities canvassing tightlipped residents among the small farms in a rural area southeast of Louisville. Boone, who's trying to avoid the life sentence he would get if convicted a third time of growing pot, has plenty of sympathizers in an area where many farmers down on their luck have planted marijuana.

"That's all he's ever done, raising pot," said longtime friend Larry Hawkins, who owns a bar and restaurant called Hawk's Place. "He never hurt nobody."

As Hawkins puts it, there are two kinds of growers: "You've got the caught and the uncaught." And, at least for now, the 67-year-old Boone is a bit of both.

He spent more than a decade in federal prison after being convicted in the late 1980s of taking part in what federal prosecutors called the "largest domestic marijuana syndicate in American history," a string of 29 farms in Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas and Wisconsin.

The group became known as the "Cornbread Mafia" and Boone was tagged by prosecutors as their leader, earning him the nicknames "King of Pot" and "Godfather of Grass." Eventually, 70 Kentuckians were accused of growing 182 tons of marijuana.

backwards ass, non progressive, puritanical, ''conservative'' WASPS ! they run the fucking government and these republican shit heels must take ''the war on drugs'' to be their jihad .

with the ''sin'' tax on tobacco, sales have plummeted and the tobacco growers either have to let the banks have their land and mortgaged equipment or grow the innocuous weed that pays the bills/

willie nelson just got arrested in some shit hole texas border crossing for 6 oz of cannabis

hero status confirmed.

i hope this guy never gets found..

tim leary took psychological testing for prison placement, took the Leary Standard Behavior Test he helped design and got himself into a gardening position at a minimum security prison, hopped down a powerline into a waiting vehicle and fled to the black panthers. then lived with a big time drug runner in switzerland. then illegally seized en route to afghanistan by the U.S. he said the two roaches he was charged with were planted by the police.

all true and documented..

So hes looking at life for a 3rd conviction..........you can molest, rape & even kill & get less time. I hope this guy never gets caught, in fact, I hope everyone gets away when it comes to the evil drugs.

For real, I'd rather see the true criminals (who leave a trail of destruction and victims behind their wrath) go to jail, and us drug users party on. ;)

I mean, if the Captain made it out to California, so can anyone in Kentucky... just saying. =D

Damn that is an intense operation he ran. 29 farms across a bunch of states!? Imagine that! 8o

It's not much, but it's enough to put a man in jail for the rest of his life for trying to make more than minimum wage.

lol all this commotion over a plant. one day in the hopefully not too distant future people will laugh hysterically that anyone was ever jailed for growing plants.

He is hiding in his underground bunker probably... lol i hope they never catch this guy...its more cruel what our government is planning on doing with this poor guy once they catch him then any of his so called "crimes" for growing pot..

Appalachia is home for me, if he's at all smart they won't find him. Lots of places to hide in those mountains, plenty of hollers where the police will flat out not go and lots of people who live very off the grid. That's how people manage to have huge outdoor fields of weed there, is they keep it in places where no law enforcement goes.

Plus, poor rural Kentuckians (Appalachians in general) like the police just about as much as poor urban black people. Few, if any, people talk to the cops in a lot of communities. The article even mentioned that.

The link is broken by the way. For me at least.
