RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) — A man who executed four people inside a quiet New York pharmacy is due to receive consecutive prison sentences of life without parole.

David Laffer pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the June holdup at Haven Drugs in Medford, perhaps the most egregious case in a wave of pharmacy robberies sweeping the United States.

Laffer has said he committed the robbery because he had lost his job, and his wife required not only painkillers but also blood pressure medicine, anti-nausea pills, and muscle relaxants. He jammed a backpack full of pills after killing the four victims.

His wife, Melinda Brady, who admitted driving the getaway car, faces up to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to robbery charges.

Both will be sentenced in a Long Island courtroom on Thursday.

Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota called the killings among the most gruesome in the history of the county. The 1974 "Amityville Horror" killings in which a man killed six members of his own family was the worst mass killing in Suffolk before the Medford homicides.

Laffer, a 33-year-old Army veteran, walked into Haven Drugs shortly after 10 a.m. on June 19 and opened fire without announcing a robbery, killing a 45-year-old pharmacist filling in for a colleague celebrating Father's Day, and a 17-year-old store clerk who was due to graduate high school just days later. He then fatally shot two customers who unwittingly walked in on the carnage, authorities said, before filling his backpack with hydrocodone-type painkillers.

That was fucking smart.. What a doushbag.. Gonna spend the rest of your life in prison for some vicodin!! There's way better drugs then that dummy..

Congrats War on Drugs, you have claimed more lives and sent people away as well. I'm not excusing what he did, what he did was atrocious and wrong in every way yet I suspect that this wouldn't have happened if painkillers were more readily available to addicts. Addicts will get them one way or another but the gov can help by making them inexpensive, at high quality-if non pharmaceutical-and OTC.

I simply cant understand why he killed those people. he had a disguise I though, hat & sunglasses? Just do your business & get out.........people are so retarded!

He was in the military those guys are trained to kill once he was in the moment bam that training kicked in he prolly didnt even realize what he was doing till it was done. Im not making excuses for the dude but thats my best guess. His actual story was that the gun accidently discharged killing the pharmacist after that he had nothing to lose by murdering everyone.

This happened in my area. Wow, first off fuck them for giving us otherwise law abiding junkies a bad name. Second, 8000 vicodin. That is a lot of fucking APAP. I hope they knew to do a CWE :>. Should have went for the fentanyl and mscontin!

Poor bastard did it for his wife who wouldn't stop nagging about her pills. Must have watched that film Drug Store Cowboys one time too many...

I didn't like how the cops beat the shit out of him, but they said he resisted by lunging for a gun. Who knows though.

Either way, glad they caught him and his wife, but not happy about how it reflects on us nonviolent drug users.

Yea he di dhave a disguise, but a friend of the family recognized him and reported it. She said she will be donating her $5,000 crimestoppers reward to the victims.
