Kids these days...

Perhaps all HS students should be made to read this thread. Great sensible comments and advice everyone.

I think the problem was less prevalent when I was in high school as there was no temptation simply because there were no drugs (or very few), although some of us were hungry to discover pot. I finished HS without getting stoned at all, undoubtedly a big factor in why I did OK. These days, not only is temptation everywhere, but a lot more is demanded of kids IMO. They are expected to behave like adults from before they reach year 7, yet aren't allowed to do so many things adults can. I think the path is definitely harder these days.

When talking to kids about drugs, I try to outline the importance of the "brain-sponge "concept. My speil to young kids usually goes something like;

Think of your brain as being like a sponge for knowledge. You are able to conceptualise and soak up information so easily when you're young. At no other time in your life will this retention/recall come so easy, as the sponge will eventually dry out and require longer to soak things up. What you learn during your teen years will be your life tools, and largely determine your next options. Drugs will always be around, but your effortless learning ability won't.

I'm 21...An ex-canberran...and when I grew up, heroin was what e is today, coz so many ppl were into grunge back then. To think I got into techno music to rebel!!! Weed was the main staple diet of everyone. I guess when I was young, yeah, weed was considered quite up there and harder drugs weren't really discussed much...a lot of ppl were scared of em coz of all the junkies around being a constant reminder....Me personally got into drugs early..around the age of 12-13. But this was quite uncommon...most ppl started smoking mull after year 10....I remember I had e when I was 14 as well as acid...and locally made E used to be quite cheap...about 10-20 a hit...usually was just either mad speed bombs or MDA...never really had contact with MDMA till much later....Acid used to be VERY popular and was one of the only hard drugs in canberra that was tolerated to say the least...But I find these days, the younger folk are really over indulging themselves at an early age...as in, when I was young, it was REALLY uncommon for a 13 yo to smoke hydro....coz they usually got ripped off by the older guys...but now, I see 13 yo's smoking shit I would consider quite up to scratch....But I personally don't think MORE ppl are using drugs...just starting off earlier...I mean, shit, they were munching better and stronger stuff back in the 60's and 70's and a lot cheaper too...
:P

Peace Out

Too high to bother writing more

Phase Dancer: That's great advice because it isn't condesending and so it will actually be listened to. As soon as one starts to preach youngin's and the not so young will write off what is said before they've even finished listening to it. Simple logic, that doesn't use the fear or scientific angle will be much easier to accept.

I grew up on the Gold Coast, a town of surfers and tourists. Pot was and to the best of my knowledge still is the most prevalent drug the area and this is what kept me well and truely in an anti drug state of mind during my HS years. At least one quarter of the school smoked and to see the change in a friend who started using heavily put me off drugs completely. If you looked around you could find shrooms and acid but that was about it.

It's hardly suprising really when you're surrounded by lethargic, grungy surfers (no offence to anyone on the coast, I also surfed) to point yourself in the opposite direction. I later learned that it is also about choice. I looked at them and decided it was not where I wanted to be (they probably didn't want me there anyway). They were happy on the Gold Coast surfing and smoking, most of them are still there today. I on the other hand wasn't content to sit on my rear.

Since then however I've meet people who have a level of drive and ambition, pot smokers with enough motivation in themselves to negate the inherant lethargy with pot. I wanted to see a bit more of the world, learn a few things and try something new (yes, including pot on a few occasions). I guess that's how I got into the rave scene.

im in year twelve bout to do my hsc at a pretty relaxed accepting inner city school at my school 80% of the boys smoke weed at least 4 times a week...... however we do have a vary minimal amount of boys

ok guys! make way for the expert!

I AM IN HIGH SCHOOL! i know millions of ppl at high schools all over the place, and the availabitly of drugs depends on who u are, what school ur at, who u kno. and more importantly ur opionion on drugs!

im one of a few who parties and does stuff other than weed. weed is common, but... again depends who u are and who u kno. easy to come across if u know the righ ppl, or even someone who occasionally does it would know etc etc.

but, nah pills and all the stuff that ppl here do, arent hugely common. i know MOST of my school friends hate the fact i do drugs and think drugs are the shittiest of shit ways to "waste ur money and life" <probably the best way to look at it>. but nah, drugs in high schools are there, but, not hugely. theres always going to be the ppl who do, but i rekon there will always be more who dont.

that really depends on what school you go to, and what town you live in.
just because your school is not rife with drugs, does not mean all schools are like that!

in 2001, i went to the main public school in cairns. while the school had a bad reputation regarding drugs, it was definately not the worst!

whilst in year 11 at this school, on any given day, there would be 50-60 kids smoking ciggies on the oval, and 40-50 kids smoking bongs, in full view of the teachers. no one gave a shit!

dugs were very prevelant at this school, with nearly all the students in year 11 having tried pot, and around 60-70% of students having tried something harder than pot!
about 30% of students were hardcore doofers(cairns is a doofing town)!

the first time i did acid was in year 11, and that is what started my decline in school. by term 3 i had had enough, and dropped out!
and the really sad thing is, the main reason i dropped out, is because i couldn't handle sitting in classes for a few hours, when all i could think about was having cones! i was stoned at every single class i went to, and i actually took a trip at school once, but luckily it was very weak.

one day i was just sitting in class, and decided 'this is it, i'm outta here'!
i told one person i was leaving, and didn't even bother saying goodbye to anyone. at little lunch, i just went home, smoked cones and fell asleep.

i sort of feel bad, because i was the first to leave. and within 2 months, 80% of my good friends had also left, and i feel it was partly because of me. they saw how i was living(sleeping till 11:00am, smoking cones all day) and decided that was what they wanted to do also!

dealing was prevelant at this school. there would be a couple of ounces of weed sold daily, not to mention the people selling pills, acid and speed!

someone was caught smoking weed every single day of the week, but nobody cared. not even the people who were caught! once they got back from suspension(that's all you got), it was straight back to smoking on the oval.

and i should know, i was one of those people!! luckily i wasn't caught on the oval tho. i went down to a mates place to have some cones, and the principal caught us walking back into the school(we weren't meant to leave).
the police were called, and i was given a caution for possesion of a dangerous drug(pot) and possesion of a utensil(pipe)!

i was suspended for a week, and you know the first thing i did when i got back from suspension??? yep, you guessed it. i smoked cones on the oval!

and what you have to remember is, this school is not the worst school for drugs in cairns, so you can imagine what the worst one was like!

even the most prestigious private school in cairns had a big drug problem!
i went there from 95-00, and it was quite bad. people dealing pot, pills, acid(including my sister). theft was rampant, as the school was full of richies!

the biggest drug bust ever at a school in cairns was at this school. a few ounces of weed and some acid were found on a senior.
needless to say, he was expelled, and charged!

i dunno, maybe it is just cairns!
but i also went to school in brisbane for a couple of terms, and it was nearly as bad as cairns! and this was another prestigious private boys school!

but i'm glad to say i have got my life on track!
whilst i haven't finished year 11 or 12, i plan to do it in the future. but at tafe. i cannot handle going back to school.
i have already done a tafe course, and have a Cert 2 in Outdoor Recreation. i also have my Rescue Diver certification and Senior First Aid.

i have just moved to perth, and have applied to do the Cert 3 in Marine Tourism at Fremantle Maritime Tafe, and if i get into that, then i will be set for the career i want(Divemaster)!
and because i have just moved to perth, that also means i have no hook ups. until recently, i hadn't smoked pot, or done anything else for that matter, in 3 months. but i recently went back to cairns for a week, and hit it pretty hard.
but now i am back in perth, and am as straight as a ruler, so to speak!

so basically, what i am saying is. drugs are rampant in schools, and there are a lot of kids using more than just pot.
i have seen lots of my friends drop out, and go absolutely nowhere. they have become vegetables!

one of them even took 30 tabs of good acid in one week. he has been tweaking ever since. that was about 3 weeks ago.

it was quite scary seeing him like that. because when i left cairns, he was fine.
he was the one who was telling people to conserve their pills, and only take halves. now he doesn't take less than 6 pills in one night, like most of my friends.

things have changed so much since i left. it is really scary!

i'm actually glad i got out of there, or i would almost certainly be in the same situation as them!

sorry for the long rant!

i went to an private school in sydney year12 2000, and you could get anything you wanted, so easily. people would sell at school

I think its pretty fucked that drugs that have such an intense hang-over and recovery period are so common with HS kids. Its not the best stage in your personal development to be fucking with your thought processes so much.

^^^ word to that

i started when i was 20, i cant imagine what it would be like doing it at 15, BAN UNDER 18 RAVES

I dont think banning U/18 raves is going to really help. What happens when you tell someone they cant do something? They immediately want to do it. Harm minimisation thru education is the best approach in my opinion. If we were to ban u/18 raves then kids would simply get a fake id and go to overage raves or nightclubs.
Education not restriction is the key.

Beech out

good point BT, send the raves back underground and it might get rid of a few of the dickhead posers and wankers.

Beech- I agree with your notion that banning under 18 raves will have a reverse effect. However, is it not fair to say that it will only have a reverse effect on the generation that it is currently accessible to? Certainly, the generation that are now under 18 and who have been to a few raves will be pushed towards other methods of ID or raving venues, but what about the generation to come? The generation that are now 11-14 will turn 15 not having access to under 18 raves. Utilitarianism must be applied here, for the generation you will push towards illegal and unsafe methods of raving, you will be preventing scores of generations to come from getting into the 'scene' at 15.
