Khat to be banned

David Nutt says you may as well ban cats.

The proponents of a ban on cats may be well intentioned, but rely on a mixture of exaggerated, selective, anecdotal, prejudiced and most frequently erroneous and illogical arguments. Cats are indeed associated with harm, which can be very serious at times, but it is unwise to generalise from the most extreme cases, or assume that cats are solely to blame for complex problems of owners users.

That's a huge shame, I tried it while living in Stepney Green, there was this Somali off licence on Whitechapel road that had an open staircase to a basement where you could see man chew khat all day, I used to walk in front of there every day coming back from uni, one night I gathered the courage to walk down the stairs, they had boxes of khat, bought two bundles. Chewed that for hours, the effect was decent, like a light oral amphetamine type of high, much much better than coca leaves. I actually got dilated pupils, that night I didn't sleep at all and the next day I went to Kendo practice and was absolutely dying wearing the armour, sweating, over-heating and really anxious and paranoid.
 
You could get it in Spar on Goldhawk Road a couple of years ago. Rang through the till as Khat.. possibly Qat... and everything. I bought a massive bunch and sat in a blues club chewing the sticks and dropping the leaves. I got fuck all from it because I was doing it the wrong way round.

It's probably going to be a fucking nightmare to smuggle as it's got to be really fresh, hasn't it?

If you boiled it in water, filtered it and slowly evaporated the water I imagine you would be left with a crude resin consisting of plant matter, cathinone, cathine and what ever other psychoactive alkaloids are present in the plant.

The problem would be extracting the desired cathinone and then I have no idea how you would go about turning it into methcathinone let alone 4methylmethcathinone. Obviously a methylating agent would be necessary.

Also the reason fresh leaves are necessary and dry leaves are thought to be worthless is that some of the compounds are unstable. I believe cathinone turns into cathine.

A far easier way to obtain cathinone or methcathinone would be to oxidate certain common cold medicines. I won't get into synth discussion. Anyway even with methcathinone you are still "a step" away from pirate. ;)
 
Grar, this makes me massively cross. I'd not even got around to trying it. The only place I'd seen it was on a khat-specific website at a tenner a bunch, which seemed steep. Hmpf. :(

heheh ;) mailmonkey might have to start dying his hair, next time he has sinus issues.

4-mmc is a completely different ballgame though indeed.
 
It is something I definitely would have tried if I was over in England in a Somali neighbourhood. Sounds awesome.

Not quite. You'd still need a further reaction to methylate the cathinone, both at the N and at the 4- (para-) position on the ring. And whatever you use to do the job mustn't go anywhere near that pert little ketone group that's just gagging to liberate some potential energy from its C=O double bond .....
