Keys to Successful Promoting?

Just throw a party for your friends, then advertise to the public. Rent a small space. If you have hordes show up, you can be elitist and turn people away. May be a cheap trick, but it'll start a buzz. If only your friends show up, no sweat. You guys just have your party. It's still a success. You'll be hard pressed to throw a big party without a rep and some swell small venue events under your belt. Unless you have tons of cash, or something. But, usually you want to develop a core group of people. You need that to have a kickass party IMO. Otherwise, it's just strangers massed together with no vibe.

I hear that on the word of mouth - but what I'm looking for is new ideas to create that.

As it's a daytime, chill event we're not doing cover. It's absolutely free - (we're making our cash via a percentage of liquor sales). I guess the thing is - because it's a sittin' on a patio thing it's the getting people to come out consistently throughout the day. Obviously most people aren't going to spend ALL Saturday chillin' with us.

Here's what we're doing to start:

-Poster
-Flyers
-Hyping it up on the local EDM radio shows
-Telling everyone we know - sending out to our email lists
-Getting listed in all the local patio guides - and the 'official' patio guide that comes out from the free weekly
-Will be hyped up by the 2 local weekly EDM columns
-Series of free cds with dope ass labels from some of the djs who will be rotating down

We're thinking of bringing down a bbq for the first week and seeing how that goes.

Wow... blast from the past indeed. For the record, these guys have thrown some wicked shows as of late, and the couple I played at were definitely some of my more fun gigs. Cant wait for the next one!

not really a response to this thread but i tried to send this dude a private message but i guess his account won't accept them

""Book real headliners who are known for not disappointing...

i.e. if you book Carl Cox, peeps will travel to see him... from EVERYWHERE.

Slater Hogan came to Kansas City and sucked balls on Halloween, but the one thing I CAN remember from his set was the "the way you move" remix he dropped.

I can also assure you that when I play out, people know whose milkshake is better than theirs.""

i usually don't reply to this kind of post, since opinion on peoples stes depend alot on what style of music they like. however, at that event, the dj before (who did train wreck a couple of times and i think opened with thriller) was introduced as me. i actually only played 4 records that night, and the first one was "i like the way you move" outkast bootie by kaskade.

so i can't take the blaim for sucking balls that night. (leaving this one open for brandon)

if you are referring to roliepolie, he's been banned from these forums for a while. Personally, Slater and John's tracks get more play than any other stuff in my crate.
