Opioids Keeping IV solutions

Hi. Simple question. Is it possible to preserve an IV solution for weeks with ethyl or Isopropyl alcohol? They are both bacteriostatic. Bacteriostatic water has benzyl alcohol in it. I do know that alcohol is very destructive to human tissue, I was thinking of dilute alcohol.

For example for every ten ml of solution one of those ml would be vodka or 0.5 of those ml would be pure ethyl alcohol. Otherwise maybe isopropyl would be acceptable? Maybe that's a better choice since it was made for medical applications in the first place? I just don't know if isopropyl alcohol (even in such tiny amounts) would be harmfull.

All advice is appreciated, I don't have access to bacteriostatic water, but I don't want to waste a filter every time I shoot (which is once a week, so I need some preservative)

I'm not sure about how healthy it would be to use either of those as preservatives in an IV solution, but I'm sure someone here will know the answer to that. I only wanted to comment because I've read a few of your past posts and you've mentioned that you use heroin, so I figured it'd be worth mentioning that if you are planning on making a heroin solution, that heroin will hydrolyze into morphine in a solution. If you leave the heroin in a solution even overnight, most of it will be morphine by the time you wake up.

First off, im not so sure that you can equate ethyl/isopropyl alchol with bacteriostatic water. I wouldnt jump to the conclusion that they have the exact same properties. They "might" share similar properties, but im not even sure what those are, but they definitely are not the same thing, so I wouldnt make the assumption that they are.

....it also depends on what kind of solution you are talking about. You didnt make that very clear. What exactly are you planning on mixing with the "bacteriostatic" solution?

If I were you, I would talk specifically to Captain.Heroin about this. He has tons of experience with preserving IV solutions for later use. I would say he is Bluelights "authority" on the subject.

I know man : ) I already looked into that. Thought it was 6MAM though. Anyway, I don't mind, still gives a rush when it's been in solution, also still gives a nice high. I was thinking of morphine, oxycodone, hydromorphone and oxymorphone (when I finally get my hands on some again).

The only reason I suggested alcohols is because most of them are bacteriostatic and relatively non toxic at low doses. If you can think of another preservative please say so. The only things I want to preserve for injection are opiates. Any I can get my hands on (which can be IV'd).

I read that a while ago. I don't have bacteriostatic water, nor do I know where to get it and until I find out how and where to get it, I want a good substitute.

for benzyl alcohol to make your own bacteriostatic water you can get it here: http://www.researchsupply.net/solvents_etc.html use at 1% of your solution. It will last you longer and is a lot cheaper this way but you need sterile water also. This is how i used to do it when i IV'd.

or for already made bacteriostatic water: http://www.mountainside-medical.com...For-Injection-Bacteriostatic-Water-30-ml.html this is the easy way.

First off, you cannot use isopropanol! It's really bad to ingest it any way (orally or IV). If you have medical grade isopropanol that might be a different story, but the bottles of isopropanol you buy in the store are not safe for any method of ingestion. This is because it is not pure.

Second, I'm not sure if ethanol or (medical grade) isopropanol would work the same way benzyl alcohol would. If they did, I'm not sure if it would keep for the same duration of time either.

You can buy benzyl alcohol, by itself, online. I would just do that. The amount of benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water is 0.9%, so I think 5 to 10% of ethanol is too much. If you were to use ethanol, I think you would want to dilute it more.

HOOD you are correct, they are allowed as they are HR products. It is OK to post sources for all different sorts of HR products (we have an IV Product Review thread specifically for IV products).
