So I got some kava tea...and didnt' notice much with my first cup. Can anyone tell me a bit more about this? What I've read so far makes me feel like maybe I need to try two teas, but I've read not to steep in boiling water...how long do most steep for? I also like skullcap tea but thought Kava might be more sedating. I took it alongside my kratom pills, maybe that lessened the effects?
*If this is the wrong place please let me know, I'm still trying to figure my way around here.
Thanks fellow BLers!

Where did you acquire this tea? From A) a holistic store in your neighborhood or B) a trusted entheogenic vendor? DON'T ANSWER THIS MERELY THINK TO YOURSELF.

All kava I've ever had from local sources has been crap.

You'd do best to buy your kava where you buy your other psychedelic plants (Rememember please: no vendor discussion), or somewhere exalted and found efficient. This is a hard question to answer without breaking rules.

I bought Kona Kava before. The way i'd make the tea was to put several tablespoons full into an old (clean) sock. Then i'd fill a large mixing bowl half full of water & dunk the sock in & squeeze for 10 mins or so until the water seemed as dark as possible.

I only ever felt a mild tranquilizing effect from this, no sedation, not high, just a smooth chilled out effect & total lack of anxiety.

Some people say that you cannot make kava in hot water because it destroys the kavalactones. I have read many experience reports suggesting otherwise. I found that 140 degrees fahrenheit (NO hotter!) is the best temp. to brew the tea. Higher temperatures degrade the kavalactones and will ruin the experience.

Kava is pretty mild for most people, I wouldn't be suprised if the kratom overpowered it.

Kratom is generally more potent than kava, though you can have your Kava strong:

Buy some quality root, and make a tea out of it using 6 or more tablespoons of the root with tepid water.

Alternatively buy some 30% Kavalactone powder, I find this really good.

Had 2 teaspoons of the 30% KL powder, and could feel it strongly, and I'd had a strong dose of Poppy Tea an hour or two earlier!

Kratom and kava should synergise, however kratom has a distinct, potent effect that can be classified as a 'high' which will certainly overpower any kava effects. If anything, the kava will simply potentiate the kratom.

Kava, as mentioned by doppelganga196, is a very subtle, chilled-out, anxiety-free state, not so much a high. You might notice more of an effect on a particularly stressful day.

i had good results this morning mixing about 3 tbls in with a bag of earl grey tea. I found it mildly sedating, but to me it has more of an anti-anxiety effect than a chill out opiate like effect

i have had much better result from stirring the kava in cold water then just drinking the whole lot, rather than making tea and discarding the kava.

If you are doing an extraction from a powdered root you need to use a liquid that has fat in it such as milk (cold) ... a water extraction is not as effective. ... I like to add some hersheys syrup after the fact so it doesn't taste like dirt.

I got it from an online source. But, I wasn't really paying close attention and was ordering multiple things...I got Kava already in tea bags. Not what I'd wanted originally.

Anyway, I think I'll stick to Kratom. The Kava feels just too mild for me, though I'll try the tips above. I tried to seep it longer last night, it did get slightly more effective. Thanks all.

Kava Teas are usually bunk.

Only buy premium root or root powder from legitimate vendors, organic is even better.

Also, it's been said, but brewing hot Kava is definitely not the way to go,
blending it with cold soy milk or milk or cream and straining it is... hell sometimes I don't even strain it and drink the powder too.

The heat destroys the kavalactones and doesn't do a good job extracting them either, it's counterproductive. You'd be better off with cold water.
