So i have recently been looking into buying some kava kava, due to social anxiety related problems, aswell as the other effects which also sounds very nice. I have found a website selling 250mg pills, but a trip report of erowid says that he had to take many pills, although im not sure how many mg there were in them.
Anyway basically what i am asking is are 250mg pills a good way to go, or would you reccomend another form of it?
Cheers :)

I had these and I had next to no effect whatsoever. I think what you have to get is the actual fresh root powder as Kava looses potency rapidly and these capsules they sell in bottles for anxiety are more or less ineffective I believe (was for me).

but when I tried looking around for fresh Kava powder on-line i found it difficult to find anything but the capsules... (not giving or asking for a source btw).

It is better to have the root powder or even the extract of Kava, most online vendors sell both the capsules and powder or extract.

As im in the UK i am finding hard finding anything but the capsules thats actually in the UK and not shipping from America. Are these definately not worth wasting my time with then?

Oh wait i have found some Pure and fresh dried kava root powder, so ill probably buy that. Any ideas on dosage and best way of consuming it?

the best way of consuming the extract, or powder is by adding either to a drink, or making a tea from it. Dosage really depends on the potency the product and your individual factors, if i was you I would read up as much as you can.

Yeah im in the process of doing that now, its just hard when there are so many varietions of forms in comes in.

I have had decent effects from the capsules, but it seems like i have to take them on an empty stomach to notice it come on.

for social anxiety, i would say that kava is a great thing. capsules should be fine for that purpose, just take them a while before you will need the effects.

as far as recreation, i have heard that the best way to go is to obtain the whole root and prepare it in the traditional way. i have not had the opportunity to do this yet, but im gonna make it happen soon.

What determines the dosing with Kava is the amount of kavalactones present in the extract or capsules. According to http://www.konakavafarm.com/kava-dosages.html:

A single shell of kava as served in Vanuatu can contain anywhere from 150 to 500 milligrams of kavalactones, depending on the variety used, the method of preparation, the ratio of kava root to water, and the volume of kava per shell. Kava drinkers there consume anywhere from 500 to 2,500 milligrams of kavalactones per day for years at a time without any apparent ill effects. This casts the Kava Committee recommendation in a highly questionable light.

Successful human clinical studies show that a daily dose of between 70 and 210 milligrams of kava lactones can effectively mitigate anxiety in many cases. To promote sleep, a dose of between 150 and 200 milligrams of kavalactones taken 30 to 60 minutes prior to retiring is effective. But employing kava to mitigate anxiety or sleeplessness is quite different from using kava to produce a pleasurable feeling of tranquility.

I highly recommend getting it in a pure form. I had to take 30+ capsules to get enough of the active ingredient that people frequently use. Great for anxiety, paranoia, depression, insomnia etc for the short term. :) For whatever reason, I read a 15,000+ word essay with lucid comprehension while on it. :p

I only tried it once however.

p.s. it tastes like ass!! And it just feels absolutely disgusting sitting in your stomach.

what you really need is the fresh root. I got some from Vanuatu. I'd compare an average-strength cup of tea to 20-30mg diazepam

For quicker/more efficient absorption, put a quid in your cheek and leave it there for at least 10 minutes.. This is very effective and causes your mouth to numb

Getting drunk on kava is quite uncomfortable tho, so if you plan on doing this sometime just keep in mind you might get stomach cramps and have to piss every 5 minutes or so

The prefix opiated is confusing since kava kava is not an opiate you should change it. Otherwise yeah you should go with a good source and buy root powder and make tea.

When I was using a lot of kratom a few years ago, one vendor included free packs of Kava root powder if you spent a certain amount: I looked around and found that the lactones are lipid soluble. Kava milkshakes (root powder blended with chocolate milk and ice cream) didn't taste bad, but never did that much for me. I think Kava is one of those substances where individual reactions vary widely and wildly - high doses never had more than a low-dose benzo kind of effect for me, though they complimented Kratom well: back when I could still choke the stuff down. How anyone can chew quids of either kratom or kava is beyond me.

And yes, this thread is mis-titled, Kava doesn't touch the opiate buttons/receptors.

^Kava root powder is basically useless tho because the kavalactones break down when you grind up the root.. and most definitely anything you buy like that has been sitting for a while, so it isn't fresh and isn't very potent. I've wasted a lot of money on it myself

You can order relatively (less than a month old at least) fresh roots from Vanuatu or Fiji.. Vanuatu roots being the most potent ones, IME.. and this is way better. It's pretty similar to a long-acting benzo. It isn't that expensive either, considering how far it goes.. at least for me, and i tend to have a lot of anxiety

I've ordered from a couple very reputable sources, and honestly kava never did much of anything for me. One of the few 'legal highs' that I would deem useless.

To me, its effects lie somewhere between GABAergics and alcohol.. less to benzos, but i make that comparison since more people are familiar with benzos than GABAergics. It's relaxing and sedating.. causes slight brain fog in average doses, but not to the extent that prescription drugs do.. altho i wouldn't drive on high doses

It works really well as an OTC remedy for insomnia and anxiety.. but if you're looking to get high you'll probably be disappointed

i have read that if you actually go to a place like fiji where kava is used and they have the potent kinds prepared properly, you can get extremely high from it. however, with the weaker, less fresh kinds and your lack of preparation knowledge the effects probably wont stand up to other drugs.

it seems that is often the case with herbs. if you think about it, its the same with marijuana. imagine comparing some brown swhagg to taking a bong hit of the finest sensimilla buds.

anyway i have a bag of kava i got from my usual kratom vendor and its supposed to be decent. i havent tried it yet though. if i like it, i might plan a vacation to fiji someday.
