WICHITA, Kan.—A Kansas doctor has been sentenced to 30 years and his wife to 33 years for running a pain clinic linked to dozens of patient overdose deaths.

Dr. Stephen Schneider and his wife, Linda, were sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Wichita.

The Haysville couple were found guilty in June of unlawfully writing prescriptions, health care fraud and money laundering. Jurors convicted them of a moneymaking conspiracy that prosecutors linked to 68 overdose deaths.

Prosecutors had asked for life sentences or the equivalent, while defense attorneys wanted the mandatory minimum 20 years in prison.

People like this make it harder for all of us who have legitimate pain issues to get the real help that we deserve.
