OK, I have been taking opiates for awhile, Rx by DR for pain. was taking OP80's twice a day
for awhile, with only a minor breakthrough meds, total of 175mg in 24hrs.
So the DR wanted me to switch so as not to get used to the Oxy, and started
me on the 100mcg/hr, which he showed me is only about half as strong as the 2 80mg
pills were , so he also gave me 4 15mg oxy IR for breakthrough.
At first I was scared it wasn't going to be enough, but I have to say, these patches
work pretty good.
So my problem is that they don't seem to work for a full 72 hours sometimes, which
I know that he can change to every 48 hours, which my wife also had to do.
What I don't want to do is abuse them, but I hate to throw away a patch full of
good medicine left in it, and it only stops because of the dead skin clogs it up,
or so I have read.
What I want to know is if rubbing the gel on my skin will work at all, and how long
it will take, because if I could take less of my breakthrough meds, I could save them
up for when I have bouts of severe pain, which my pain level spikes at times.
I there also a way to make a homemade patch, like the material that is on the
patch, how it seeps through it, does anybody know what it is made out of?

Even with your tolerance, you would NOT be at all safe in playing with fentanyl patches, even if they were the lowest dose available of 12.5 mg/hr. (1/8th your current dose of patches.) It is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS to tamper with the patches in ANY way, especially the way you are suggesting. I am not underestimating the potential danger, here - really, BE SAFE AND USE PATCHES AS THEY ARE, AS DIRECTED.

If I've learned a single thing on BL, it is 'do not fuck with fentanyl' ... no exceptions to that rule.

I wouldn't know how to use the leftover gel to make a homemade patch. My understanding is that they are made from a special adhesive that allows the medicine to be absorbed, not too sure what it is exactly. You might be better off like you mentioned, asking the doctor to change the regimen to 48 hours.
