Opioids Just started cymbalta 5 days ago; can I take tramadol

My doctor just started me on the SNRI anti-depressant Cymbalta about 5 days ago, 30 mg every morning. I have had severe back pain recently and I have found an old prescription of mine for tramadol. If I didn't take the cymbalta yet today, can I take lets say 150-200mg of tramadol without risk of serotonin syndrome? I imagine I'm fine because I've only been taking the cymbalta for 5 days, but better safe than sorry. Serotonin syndrome sounds dreadful and I don't want to risk it. Please help, I really need to take this tramadol but I don't want to get serotonin syndrome or have a seizure. I've only been on the Cymbalta for 5 days and I haven't taken it today so I could take the tramadol safely but I don't know if not taking it for one day then taking tramadol after 5 days of cymbalta is safe.

at what time are you going to take the tramadol? you should be fine regardless, just don't take more than 400-500mg of tramadol in one day until your tolerance increases.

I was planning on taking it at 10:30 tonight and the last time I took cymbalta was yesterday around noon. It's 10:00 where I am now. I'm just really paranoid about these sort of things. From what I've read, tramadol with any other serotonic drug can cause a severe reaction. I hope it's been long enough from my last dose of cymbalta to not cause terrible side effects from taking tramadol tonight.

I just took them. My back pain is unbearable and I don't have any access to any other pain killer. I would get kratom but its way too expensive at my local headshop and I'm broke at the moment. Really hope I don't have a seizure or have to be hospitalized for serotonin syndrome. If I should induce vomiting now would be a good time to let me know.
 
lol i wouldn't stress if i were you, unless you just took 400+ mg of tramadol then you will be fine. your setup with taking the cymbalta in the morning and the tramadol in the evening is a good combination and it will result in minimal interaction between the two. rest easy :)
 
Well thanks a lot man. That takes a load off my mind. You think I could take my dose of cymbalta tomorrow morning with no ill effect even though I took the tramadol tonight? Should I wait until the day after tomorrow to take the cymbalta just to be safe?

ok now I'm not so sure I'm ok. I haven't been able to sleep since I took the tramadol and the euphoric and analgesic effects have worn off and now I just feel strange. Like I'm in a weird head space. I hope I just feel strange because I haven't gotten real sleep but have only caught a half assed nod. I really can't afford a trip to the hospital if I have obtained serotonin syndrome. I don't know what to do. When I try to sleep I feel very strange, somewhat confused one might say. I've read this is one of the symptoms of serotonin syndrome. Like I don't know, it just feels like a very dirty feeling nod when I try to sleep. How do I know I have serotonin syndrome? Will I just feel what the symptoms describe? I'm terrified. If this info helps, I had one glass of wine with the 200mg of tramadol I took. PLEASE HELP ANYONE! I can't really go to my doctor for medical advice because he's the type that would judge me and just label me as a drug abuser.

MrWF...I hope you are ok..Everything Ive read points to a MAJOR risk for SS wth these two meds. I personally hate duloxetine.

Well time has passed and i managed to get some sleep; I feel a lot better now. I shall not risk that again though. I appreciate the concern.
 
30mg of Duloxetine and 200mg of Tramadol isn't much, and I'd be very surprised if that could induce SS in somebody, unless ~300/400mg of Tramadol alone couldn't do the same.

That said, we're all different and all respond differently to different drugs. I used to take Venlafaxine & Duloxetine with Tramadol in the past and I had no problems but I certainly wouldn't encourage to mix the two.

Anyway, good job you're safe and stay away from mixing them in future. :)
 
I feel certain that Tramadol will have the same fate as Propoxyphene... Once some affluent teen dies from it and then the crusading mom who wants to show that their child didnt die in vain, they will get a law passed banning it in the child's name. Here in Florida we have several laws named after dead kids (Ryans Law, Nicholes law), when the kids were entirely at fault. You are not supposed to take 22 of anything. My apologies if I sound callous.
