Just Say No.... to stupid sleeping positions

So I woke up the other day unable to move my left hand. After some nightmare trips to the A&E (waiting for 8 hours for some useless trainee doctors), I paid for a private Osteopath and it seems I may have compressed the radial nerve in my arm, possibly as a result of sleeping on it funny after consuming a little to much Alprazolam for my own good...

the things you take for granted having two hands... I can't type properly, can't use a knife and fork, getting dressed is that much harder... :cautious:

I don't think it was the Alprazolam per se that damaged my hand, just that I must have passed out in a very unusual position. This is sometimes know as Saturday Night Syndrome as drunk people sometimes fall asleep in a chair and compress that nerve

My fear is I'll be paralysed in that hand for life. Anyway, my warning is to try to pass out on a bed in a comfortable position the next time you get wasted

This happens quite often when people take large doses of depressants then go to sleep. I hope you get back the full use of your hand; scary stuff.
I had a friend who had the same thing happen but after about a week, it got better. It took a while to get the full use though.
Similar thing happened to me when I used to party without sleeping for days. I woke up one morning (or evening; didn't mean anything those days) with a really bad burn on my knee. What happened was, the sleep was so deep that I didn't feel my flesh burning because of the heater. It burned so bad that it took more than a month to get better.
I wish you good luck; hope you get better.

I've had a similar thing happen to me - I must have had my laptop cable in between my head and my first finger.
I woke with a HUGE blister (which got infected) and the peeps at the hospital, that I had to go to everyday (ball-ache), thought for sure that it was a burn.
Tis true that I was fucked on gear (& other such depressants) though.

But having to crawl out of bed to get my Gabapentin (due to not being able to move my legs for the pain) is another thing

^^ Had a friend who fell asleep against a radiator. He now has third degree burns and subsequent skin grafts up his arm and hand where it melted against the radiator.

I didn't need skin grafts but mine was quite bad too and it wasn't because of large doses of depressants but I was awake for a ridiculously long time partying with a large amount and variety of stimulants and hallucinogens.

It will come back. You've just bruised and shocked the radial nerve or possibly the brachial plexus. It's a very slow process though as nerves regenerate at around 1mm per day and it has to travel the full length of your arm...

You absolutely need to get a physio referral and get hand therapy though...

I did exactly the same thing before and it took around 8 months to a year to recover...

Don't worry though it will return but it takes a huge amount of physio and exercises at home to get the movement back.

Thank you, that gives me some hope. The Osteopath has given me some exercises to do

. Do you know how yours was caused?

Pretty much the same as you. Took some diaz along with my morphine and pregabalin to try and sleep through the pain of my injured leg and fell asleep lying on my arm.

Progress feels slow until one day you notice a flicker of movement that wasn't there before and it builds from there... I found closing my eyes and just trying to move the hand even if it doesn't actually move . Imagine the muscles contracting and build up the mind muscle neuro pathways like that.... Plus stick to your exercises and keep doing them... It's slow but believe me.. It will get beter

Im going through something similar right now again actually, except I've actually torn some nerves and my whole arm is paralysed... It's complicate but it's to do with the infection in my spine... This is my 6 th week in hospital now and I'm laying awake here at 1:20am in an absolute world of pain.... More pain than I can describe... Nurse has just given me 20mg of oramorph and 5mg of diaz in the hope of me eventually getting to sleep, so I do sympathise with your pain and worry..... But you'll be OK mate

damn... and I thought I had it bad. I really hope things get better for you

please keep us updated

I stupidly took some more and almost had the same thing happen with my right hand

I'm such an idiot, but the Xanax is going in the bin

Come on Forever Changes, wtf seriously. That was really idiotic man; it probably is a very good decision to throw them in the garbage. It's not worth loosing the use of an arm.

i fell on my bike due to being on dope, benzos, and alcohol. hit my knee and had a drop foot limp for over a month.

right as it was getting better, i passed out on my kitchen floor in a crumpled position due to the same combo. when i came to the drop foot was back in full force. took another month or two to go away.

i was all wigged out because i read heroin od can cause nerve damage in extremities. i was pretty sure i had hurt it falling off my bike, but couldn’t quite remember.

promised myself i’d be done with dope if it resolved. it did. i’ve kept that promise sans one gram slip up. of course i wildly miscalculated my dose due to the months of not using. which resulted in yet another bike crash. been given too many chances. no more.

warnings heeded- Benzos are too risky, for me anyway

oddly I used to get wasted on alcohol all the time, but never injured myself or did anything that stupid

Shit mate I read your references to this but didn't know it was that bad. Luckily it is unlikely to be permanent but hopefully you learnt the lesson.

For reference though you mentioned taking 8-10mg alprazolam in another thread. That's a ridiculous dose. I've been doing benzos for years and never taken that much alprazolam in a day even when I was reckless with them during depressive episodes or boshing them with mates on the weekend. The most I've got to is 2-4mg and at that point I begin to taper and take a tolerance break if I feel I need that much to feel the drug. Even during my last weekend sesh boshing Ksalol 1mg one blister pack (15 tablets) was split between three people for two days and we went through the whole thing and that was enough for us all to be mashed... that's 15mg between three people so averages out to 5mg each over two days and keep in mind we've all got tolerance from prior benzo use too.

If you lack the self-control to lower your dose then chucking the Xanax was a good idea though. Well done for that.
