Benzos Just a quick question about possible tolerance?

I am prescribed to xanax, 1mg twice a day. I just filled my new script, and im not feeling them AT ALL. I've been on benzos for 8+ years and this is the only time this has ever happened to me. My last months script was fine, I was able to take them and feel the effect. Just to test this... I took 6mg and felt nothing... How can my tolerance shoot up that high in a month (and I hadnt had any for 30 days prior to this new script being filled.) Is it possible my Dr somehow hot the pharmacy to give me a placebo or something? I am also on suboxone, But ive been taking the xanax before my subs... Does that make any difference? I remember when I would take my sub first, and then my xanax it was normal. I'm scared now cause ill run out early cause 1mg no longer does it for me, I see my dr on the 7th of oct and I'll ask him to swith me back to 2mg twice a day and see if that helps but if you have any comments on this please, tell me. Thanks

if they weren't real xanax than you would be in w/d right now
True... but have you ever heard of doctors doing that? just randomly having a pharmacy give you placebos that look like the real thing to see how you react to placebos?

I would normally say tolerance, but last month one pill did me just fine. Now, nothing. Do you think maybe the suboxone im on has anything to do with it?

Pharmacies do not hand out placebos, ever.

That said, Xanax and the other benzodiazepines lose efficacy very rapidly, even over the course of a month of regular use, and even then their effect can be subtle. Increasing the dosage is not smart - I would find an alternative way to deal with anxiety.

Benzodiazepine tolerance is something that takes a seemingly long time to diminish. Mine has been sky-high since I was prescribed xanax. Even though I haven't messed with them for quite awhile 1mg probably would barely tickle my pickle. Another thing I've noticed is how fast tolerance rebuilds to its former level. It took probably 3 days or so of daily use to end up right back where I started every time. Although I was going way overboard at the time, which probably contributed I'm sure.

You can switch benzos, but it won't do you any good because they share a cross-tolerance, so it won't last forever.

Benzos are meant for short-term treatment as it is, though. sekio's advice would serve you best here, find an alternative. There aren't many and it's hard, but worth it ultimately. Also, if you got the pills from a pharmacy, you can rest assured knowing they are the real deal, lol.

I am 26 now and have been seeing psyches since iw as 15. Since then ive been on valium, lithium, all sorts of anti depressants, klonopin, and xanax. Xananx has been a main stay, the med ive been on the longest ( 6 years+). I do need something to control my panic attacks, social phobia, anxiety, and i have something called Avoidant Personality Disorder (japanese its called something like hikkikomori)... So I def. need a fast acting medication or I will not be able to work again outside the house and I fear ill end up living with my parents forever.... Im scared that my meds arent working anymore and dont know what to fo :(

I suggest you find someone who does cognitive behavioural therapy and wean yourself off of all those medications... in the end the best treatments for anxiety are almost always based in the psyche - either therapy or drug based realizations that the world isn't *that* bad.

It is critical to note that benzodiazepines are a short term cure for anxiety and are not meant for chronic usage because they do lose efficacy.

Don't dig the pit deeper, increasing your dosage will only come to haunt you in the end when you have to detox off a massive benzodiazepine habit.

Other medications that have much less... impact, and better withdrawal profiles, than benzos and lithium:
* Hydroxyzine
* 5-HT1a agonists like buspirone
* Excercise and an enriched environment
* Beta blockers (stops jitters, racing heart etc)
* Mild GABAergics like valerian

If you go on beta blockers though...be sure not to do anything speedy recreationally...They literally cancel each other out. Yes people mix uppers and downers which stimulates and depresses your CNS simultaneously, which is bad, but taking a stimulant on a beta blocker is speeding up and slowing down your heart at the same time. I just see cardiac arrest coming from that lol.
